(Paste Magazine) Cool Colin Meloy has written a childrens book. Expected to be a verbose travelogue of a youthful rapscallions descent to libations and wenches while at sea, before meeting his untimely end at the end of a belaying pin wielded by an ancient sea hag   (pastemagazine.com) divider line 20

I was hoping for an illustrated version of The Mariner's Revenge

In pop-up book form, no less.

Descent is the highest form of libation.

Boys who read this book will be destined to marry women with angry, murderous brothers.

/Decemberists - one of the best live shows i've ever seen

I FINALLY got to see them live on Hazards of Love. Truly epic show.

I'd buy it, and I'm 27. Colin Meloy is the poet laureate of music; I'd plunk down decent money to read that dude's shopping lists.

I dunno... the bar for indie rock story books is set fairly high:

"Castaways and Cutouts" and "Her Majesty the Decemberists" were both absolutely amazing. Everything after that has been a march towards mediocrity. Well "The Hazards of Love" is mediocrity, I guess we have to wait to see if it was their destination or if they are still marching.

No hard feelings from me though, if you've followed their live shows over the years it's clear they want to be a rock and roll band with amps at 11 and tens of thousands of screaming kids at every show. I think they lost their appeal on the way, but if they are happy then more power to them.

I completely disagree. I like "Picaresque" the most, and thought "Castaways" was mediocre.

Same here. I liked "Castaways" better than "Her Majesty," but they really peaked with "Picaresque." The Tain EP was pretty good too.

Her Majesty > Picaresque > Castaways > The Tain > Crane Wife.

I like to pretend "Hazards" never happened.

1. Picaresque
2. Castaways
3. the Crane wife

[2 and 3 are pretty close]

like Arthur Figgis stated, i like to pretend "hazards" never happened either. it had a kinda neat/interesting concept, but they didn't pull it off too well, IMHO. Almost no great or even catchy songs, mediocre lyrics by Meloy standards, and somehow vocal guests + Decemberists don't mix. the whole thing is kind of a long tangled mess.

/never liked "majesty"... it had too many acoustic songs and was boring.

My wife and I and our friends used to go see Tarkio (Colin's earlier band) whenever we could at the infamous and now defunct Jay's Upstairs here in Missoula back in the day.

*sigh* Good times... I miss those days.
