If you'd bother to read past the first paragraph in your wiki article you'd see a nice article about the naming dispute. The english are fairly well known for their antipathy towards change - this includes their nomenclature.

Ireland is a sovereign nation. claiming the north is part of the BI is fine but saying ireland is part of the BI is like claiming that the US is part of Canada. Canada is bigger after all.
