I was 5 years old for that game and knew it was really really bad.

When my roommate got the new Ghostbusters game. $55 for a game that took 7 hours to beat and had no reply value. He cried all the way back to Gamestop to return the thing to the same employee he bought it from that morning.

I didn't cry but I did have some pangs of empathy when chickie-pie threw herself off a cliff after Dr Cid croaked in Final Fantasy (whichever) and when you lose your horse in Shadow of the Colossus.
Plus I felt a little wistfull during "The Boat Song" in Lunar.

Aeris' death was a surprise, but you know, she is just a collection of pixels and mediocre dialogue so I can't see why anyone would cry over her.

I have to agree with this. The unskipable cutscenes kinda sucked, but other than that, it was an amazing game...

Well of course they cry.

"OMG I paid $60 for this game and I can't even understand the shiatty storyline WHAT'S LEFT, POINT AND CLICK SPREADSHEET "GAMEPLAY" SQUARE YOU SUCK!"

It's only a matter of time before your innocent Japanese man loses track of the 500 plot twists and realizes he could have bought a whole carton of panties.

/why yes, I do hate these games

I don't think I've ever cried playing a video game, but I have gotten teared up a few times.

Not Aeris, though. That was more shocking than anything. (WHAT!?! They can't permanently kill a party member!)

Cid's death and Celes' subsequent suicide attempt though...

Confabulat: I teared up a little at the end of Chrono Trigger.

Which one?

FarkinPcola: I cried when Ultima 9 ended half way through the game because of its bugginess.

Ultima IX isn't sad, per se, but it does have a sort of introspective, melancholic forlorn-ness to it. The panflute melody that plays when you visit the ruins of New Magincia for the first time is simultaneously the most beautiful and the most haunting scene in all of video games. On top of that, just the nature of the quest itself, combined with the fact that you KNEW it was going to be the last Ultima game, makes the whole adventure bittersweet. It's like going to your own funeral. It makes for a very reflective and contemplative video game experience. But not directly sad.

Anyways, my vote goes for Final Fantasy VI -- When Celes is alone on the island after Kefka literally destroys the world, and it forces you to play the mini-game to prolong the loneliness.... and if you fail (which is a better storyline than if she succeeds), she goes to the top of the cliff and commits suicide my hurling herself off the edge.

That. Was. Shocking.

If the game had ended right there, it would have been the best ending ever just for Squaresoft having the big brass ones to do that.

flyingmonkeysreign 2009-11-05 11:35:25 AM
Didn't cry but I did scream like a little girl many many times playing FEAR with the lights off and the sound up

/There's one point in the game were you reach the end of a gantry with a ladder leading down. As the mount the ladder and the camera spins 180 degrees so you can climb down, all of the suddenly you're face to face with Alma for a split second before she vanishes. I physically shoved myself so hard backwards I knocked my monitor off my desk. And screamed. That to.

Mostly because I sunk into the couch and the rumble controller wound up wedged against my balls, but still.....

I cried after tanking 160 hours* into FFX-2 for the perfect ending only to be sorely disappointed by how underwhelming the perfect ending was. Just a 1 minute cutscene with Yuna and Tidus sitting on the rocks at the Zanarkand ruins. Gay.

/* turns out 100% completion doesn't count unless you achieve it in a single play-through - took me 3 playthroughs
//I heard the Japanese perfect ending for X-2 had a FMV where Jecht becomes Sin and returning to Spira

This one cheesed me off too - you have Phoenix Down as a major gameplay element. If they had made it clear that phoenix down fixed "knocked out" characters or something, it would make sense, but it's pretty reasonable for players to assume that it's *dead* people. So having a party member get killed was kind of a WTF.
