Hmm, EZ-pass sends a notice months in advance of your linked CC expiring. In the event your EZ-pass isn't read or you don't have it, you can pay unpaid tolls by simply sending a document certifying
that you do in fact own an EZ-pass. I'm glad I don't have one with them.

On the Dallas tollway at a 60 cent unmanned toll exit, the machine would not take the last 25 c I was depositing. I put close to $2 in change but it would not budge. I said fark it and went ahead. 2 months later I get fined $25 for the 'unpaid' 25 cents.

I am all for toll roads. Put them right next to the regular freeway and if you are in a hurry then you pay the toll and you can drive up to 100 mph and not below 80 mph.

I've been sticking $30 in pennies up my ass for the past 11 years! That's 3,000 pennies a day; 21,000 pennies a week; 1,092,000 pennies a year! To date that's 12,012,000 pennies, 8 times the population of Nebraska. Those pennies were in my ass! You think you're better than me? Oh, you're not better than me. You handle my ass pennies every day. You pick up my ass pennies for good luck. You throw my ass pennies in fountains and make wishes on them. You give my ass pennies to your little daughter to buy gumballs with. You handle my ass pennies every day! All of you! You all handle my ass pennies! Oh, I laugh at you before you can laugh at me. Because your pennies have been in my ass. You hear me? Your pennies have been in my ass!

The Phatness 2009-11-05 11:47:54 AM
This happened to me in virginia. I had to go to court on tuesday. I had $4,100 in fines for 8$ in missed tolls. Luckily, I guess VA is a bit more resonable, so they settled it for 120$.

But seriously... who put these fines into place? And why are they there if they aren't going to be enforced?

I hate the virginia department of transportation.

Privately owned companies who have the barrels of police weapons to enforce their rackets.

At least that's how it works here in Texas.

It's a growing trend in CA, unfortunately.

I farking hate toll roads. I drove from DC to NJ and had to pay almost $20 in toll roads. Just farking tax it like everyone else, and that way I don't need to keep cash in my car. (And of course if you don't have exact change, you pay extra, which is farking brilliant.)

Double troll or double fail?

"Under the settlement agreement, motorists who received a toll evasion penalty between January 1, 2003 and October 5, 2009 may be eligible for a share of the $1.4 million restitution payment and a 29 percent discount any unpaid toll penalties."

PS Yes, I do realize this is not very interesting.

The couple racked up $580 in unpaid tolls in 2003 after the credit card linked to their toll transponder account expired. For this mistake, OCTA demanded that they pay $53,550 in fines. Similarly, Maria and Pablo Gonzalez allegedly failed to pay $60.14 in tolls and were billed $78,780.

I had a similar problem, on these same exact toll roads. When my wife & I were dating, I took the 91 toll road to get to her house. I also added her car to my account. About a year after I had added her car, my wife got a bill from them saying that she owed ~ $50 in unpaid tolls, which had been already billed and paid for several months earlier and a few hundred in fines for using the lanes without an account and late fees.

I sent them a copy of the statements showing that they had been paid on my account, and a letter that I had received after adding her car to the account. I didn't hear anything from them for a few years, until they changed ownership.

When that happened, I got another bill from them for the original ~$50, and another ~$7,500 in fines for supposedly not having an account, and late fees. I sent them a copy of the original letter that I had sent them, along with another note politely telling them to fark off, and if they send me another bill I would be contacting a lawyer and would go after them for harassment. That was about 5 years ago. I haven't heard from them since, but I imagine it's only a matter of time before I do.

The Bay Bridge does something like double the fine is you don't have the money on you, which as avoidable as it seems, also seems likely to happen often by accident.

In NJ, where I grew up, they just gave you an envelope where you had to pay the toll to send in, after they took down your info. Seemed a little bit more fair.
