The only *safety* enhancement I saw mentioned was that it could distribute the force over a wider area. If that's really an issue (and I haven't seen any accident reports that reflect injuries caused by too-narrow seat belts), couldn't that be done with wider seat belts? I'm just questioning the amount of bang for the buck.

And what is it about my life that makes it "pitiful"? Man, there are just too many guys in here lately that just dive into the insults in lieu of talking points.

Actually, inflatable seatbelts are quite innovative. One of the problems is that you don't have a large area to put the airbag, like the steering wheel, dashboard, or door header - you've just got a strip of nylon. You can bulk it up a bit, but not too much or it will be uncomfortable.
One of the problems with seatbelts now is that in a hard front collision, the seatbelt can cause internal injuries. Adding a half second of deacceleration time will reduce those, if not eliminate them altogether.

As for your point about tards not wearing them, that's fine. Their insurance won't pay out, so our premiums won't go up. The only people they're hurting are themselves and their next of kin.
