Wow, I'd forgotten that one. This was about a writer's strike that Letterman did not support, I think? Never covered this in American Splendor, I think. Letterman lost his cool, and I can see as Pekar is annoying dude, but Letterman comes off as so much less cool for doing so.

Harvey Pekar was also on No Reservations.

He was right to be angry, but h was at the height of his game here, and let Pekar rattle him, and expressed it in an unfunny manner.

Harvey's actually a pretty cool guy. He'll give you excellent obscure jazz recommdations to listen to. And, I love his great American "Get off my lawn" voice. When the hub is talking to him on the phone (Harvey doesn't do email), he can be out in the backyard, and you can hear every word Harvey says while you're sitting in the living room. Cracks me up.

He was saying recently that he still works on about four projects a year. I wish he'd sit his cantankerous arse down and do a children's book. Of course, the fact that I'm a bookworm who never outgrew her love for children's books has *cough*nothingwhatsoever*cough* to do with said wish.

Awwww, I'm sure Letterman is crying into his pillow stuffed with money in his personal sex room at his studio.

someone needs to lay off the caffeine.

Bacontastesgood 2009-11-05 10:39:26 AM
That guy reminds me of some of the hyper 70s holdovers who came back to finish their degrees when I was in college. They thought every word out of their mouths was gold and had no problem talking over anyone and everyone. Yeah, if you know so much about life why are you divorced, unemployed and taking organic chemistry when you're 38 years old? Nothing wrong with going back to school but don't spout off like you're the King of Spain FFS.

I've always wondered how a smart guy like Harvey ended up working a dead end mail clerk job at the VA any way.

Hey, it was 1987. The Reagan Administration was doing more than praying for terrorists, it was giving Kalashnikovs to them...

Unfortunately many have no understanding at all of how to better themselves by focusing their talents to optimize their professional standing. (Wow, that sounds like an objective for a resume.)

American Splendor was a great movie. That had to be said.

I was bored out of my tree after the first 20 minutes. Who the fark wants to watch the minutiae that makes up ordinary life. It's not interesting. Movies are about escapism. Not farking greasy nerdy divorcees whose highlights in life include collecting old records, yard sales, and being cheap. It was like a 2 hour home movie of my uncle Ed.

So how is the "Transformers 2" Blu-Ray disc, anyway?

Not that anyone's listening, but Pekar is mad about GE (which owns NBC) making defective nuclear reactors. He tried to expose this on Letterman's show earlier (cf. the link at the beginning of the clip). Letterman supported his bosses and cut him off. I'll spare you my political reminiscences.

"Defective" nuclear reactors? What does he want, a warranty replacement?

Dave was correct, an entertainment talk show is neither the time or place.

Again. Boring. I'm more of a "The man from Earth", "El orfanato " or "El laberinto del fauno" kinda person. I'm usually bored with most Hollywood movies. They're predictable, tedious and self serving.

That was the point of the movie, that he was able to illustrate mundane life and make it interesting. Oh, and you don't give your Uncle Ed enough credit. He may smell like onions, and that is a sad excuse to not involve yourself in his life, but he is a FASCINATING individual!

Yeah, it's pretty cool when someone points a finger at your face constantly, constantly cuts you off, shows no respect to you as he demands respect in return and tries to go on a one-sided rant.

Harvey?

He's like Woody Allen without the funny or semi-incest. I hope he meets someone as annoying as he is and they bicker each other to death.

Be careful with that name you got there, you might just drop it on someone's foot.

What an ironic Headline. "Wish for a terrorist" the same day Ft. Hood happened.

Thats not even the most uncomfortable Harvey Pekar on Letterman clip, let alone the the most uncomfortable overall Letterman clip.

Back in 1987 the pop-culture image of a terrorist was the Libyans in Back to the Future and incidents of actual terrorism on American soil were seen as freak, isolated events and not part of a paradigm of fear.

Who was that guy who almost kicked Letterman in the face?(A comedian.) Was over 15 years ago. He was standing by the desk doing all these crazy moves. Then cut to commercial. When they returned the guy was gone.

You're thinking of Crisping Glover. Brilliant stuff.
Stuff like Glover and Pekar were why Late Night was such a great show then. It was like a scuzzy, sideshow freak version of Carson instead of Buddy Hackett you get guests that might just try to kick the host in the head.
