Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?

Mackey-IW: No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

OMG they have graphics settings? That's so radical and hip, I was on the edge but I'm totally getting it now *facepalm*

They'll never again top COD 1.

This may be the most loltastically sad thing I've heard from a game company in a long time. What happened to you Call of Duty, you used to be cool. Do we have to go back to Sten Guns and MP40s to save this series?

Can I still tube from spawn to spawn? It's pretty sad when you've been a farm4.static.flickr.com 55 for more than a year and you still haven't finished off most of the kills on guns, never mind headshots. c:

Having played both versions of the original on the PC...you don't miss it. 32 players in MW1 was always a nade-spamming clusterf*ck.

Bought all of these at launch for PC
Medal of Honor Allied Assault
Call of Duty
Call of Duty: United Offensive
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty 4

Sadly, this will be the first main Call of Duty/Infinity Ward games I plan to buy at a bargain bin (if that ever happened). They will sell gazillion copy without my help anyway.

Like Diablo 3 - this was one of those games I had mentally marked as a "yep, gonna pay full price and buy it week 1" buy every, and I mean EVERY, release I see on this thing makes me go WTF?

Seriously I think Fellows above nailed it, they're taking a slam dunk and turning it into a "maybe" type of thing.

/just started Dragon Age, looks GREAT so far.

No such thing as COD3 for PC and World at War came after CoD4.

I've also bought each Call of Duty game at launch. Actually I bought 2 of each. I had really high hopes for MW 2 since it was being made by IW instead of whoever made World at War. I only played World at War for maybe 2 hours tops. Ive logged a couple hundred hours at least playing MW and I only plan on pirating MW2 just to play single player.

I've just started too, its been pretty solid so far. Will tide me over until Mass Effect 2 at least. I had serious doubts about Dragon Age mostly because the trailers seemed somewhat juvenile, but it has far exceeded my low expectations.

COD2 may have been the definitive WW2 shooter, that game was nigh perfect. What was crazy was COD4 was a near perfect modern shooter, and I can't believe they're doing this to the sequel.

MixxMaster: If this means less bunny-hopping, spray-and-pray unbelievably fast kills, I'm all for it. How about a bit of realistic strategy for once?

My admittedly dated experience with network arenas in general is that they're deliberately simple and compact, forcing players to bump into each other incessantly. Which, as far as I can tell, is the point. But yeah, beyond a given number of players it gets ridiculous.

Putting everyone in a small maze may artificially accelerate the pace, but throw in a total lack of organization along with a narrow format like that and yeah, tactics will be absurdly simplistic.

Add some layers of complexity to the scenario such as passive defenses and soft cover (foliage, smoke) already. Vary the terrain instead of making every damn arena feel like a farkin' abandoned theme park. Randomize weather and alternate day & night instead of making them "special" scenarios. We have the technology.

Seth'n'Spectrum:

I disagree slightly here, I think that COD:UO (COD1's expansion) was better than COD2. Granted, I didn't get a chance to play COD2's multi, but the single just fell kind of flat for me, especially the ending section. I loved the 'forced retreat' level, just post-D-Day, but a lot of it seemed repetitive, with respawning Nazis or unbalanced level design.

What was crazy was COD4 was a near perfect modern shooter, and I can't believe they're doing this to the sequel.

My roommate had COD4 for Xbox, so I ended up playing it a good amount (my computer was crap, could barely run TF2) and the multi never really appealed to me. I loved the single player, and nothing in the news lately has made me think that the single is getting any worse here (with mild co-op tossed in!) but I'm still disappointed in what I'm reading, because it's obvious that IW has completely forgotten about the PC side of gaming.

On the topic, it does kind of make sense to have a lower limit on vs when you don't have any mods or non-IW maps. If you could go up to 48 players, you're damn straight you would want player-made maps and mods over the tiny, intimate maps that are meant for cozy little cat-and-mouse games.

The biatching over MW2 never ends. Don't like it? Don't buy it, don't biatch about it online. I'm not gonna buy whatever the new Madden is, but I'm not gonna complain about it.

I don't even know how people could play with more than 12 or 18 players on MW1, without having ALL custom maps.

If they're making it 9v9 on 360 I'll be excited, as long as there's no Shipment sized maps on the rotation.

No, the problem is when they convince the studios they're the target market. Then you get a system specifically designed to appease the little farktards.

I think part of the worry is that if we let IW get away with this idiocy now, and MW2 sells anyways, other PC game developers will start pulling the same crap.

Prospero424 [TotalFark] 2009-11-04 09:18:01 PM
Well, part of the reason CoD4 sold so well on the PC was the truly excellent multiplayer. Now that they're gimping the multiplayer aspect of the game (which is MOST of the game to the hardcore fanbase) just for the sake of remaining consistent with the "experience" of the consoles, there's really no reason whatsoever to buy it on PC for a lot of people.

They'll either just play the console version at a friend's place or they'll pirate it and stick to the single player mode, or both. After all, I'm pretty damned sure that if it hadn't been for the multiplayer, a WHOLE LOT of folks who bought the first one on the PC just would have pirated it. Sad, but true.

I'm sure it'll sell quite well, but not as well as it SHOULD have. Not that a company like Activision gives two shiats about PC gamers, anyway...

They've just made that even more abundantly clear.

MixxMaster: If this means less bunny-hopping, spray-and-pray unbelievably fast kills, I'm all for it. How about a bit of realistic strategy for once?

You realize spray-and-pray is not an effective method, and if they killed you that fast they were obviously aiming, right?

smooshie: I think part of the worry is that if we let IW get away with this idiocy now, and MW2 sells anyways, other PC game developers will start pulling the same crap.

Exactly.

There are more and more really excellent games ported to PC every year (I'm thinking the last couple of Splinter Cell games, Dead Space, Batman: Arkham Asylum, GTA IV, and others) where they cared so little about the PC version that they wouldn't even let you properly customize your controls. In fact, the ONLY way to play GTA IV on the PC was to either use the "aswd" keyboard movement standard (which I DESPISE) or use an XBox 360 controller and only an XBox 360 controller. I've never even gotten around to the new Grand Theft Auto because of that, and it's possible I never will. It's getting to the point that some of the biggest developers are just expecting you to use a console-type controller for first-person shooter games on the PC and won't really support any other control scheme.

The fear is that the same phenomenon is heading to multiplayer: that developers are going to deliberately force out some of the very aspects of PC gaming that make it unique and, for some classes of game, clearly superior to the consoles for the sake of cost cutting, consistency, and just plain laziness/complacency for the platform.

OyleSylck [TotalFark] 2009-11-04 09:33:48 PM
The subject line is pretty accurate about the mouse and keyboard support.

Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?

It wouldn't be such a big deal, but shouldn't newer iterations bring improvements instead of stripping things away? Console gamers won't notice a difference because non-dedicated servers and smaller multiplayer matches are the norm. I never planned on getting the game for any platform, but I can see why PC gamers would consider a game with less features than previous iterations to be a step backwards, and how they would be a little PO'ed at Infinity Ward and/or Activision because of these announcements.

Ok, someone who's more of a PC gamer than I, what would a non-port version have, other than the dedicated servers/mod community issues?

Other than control scheme, input options, and graphical control, what poor qualities does a port have? I'm just not seeing what the good bits are that a console port would be lacking in.

/I know about the fixed 65-degree FOV, as well

Well, that's the big stuff as far as I'm concerned. Some people demand or at least lament the lack of titles where the gameplay is specifically tailored to the PC experience - difficulty level, responsiveness, level design, etc. Basically, when you're making a game, you have to have a set of expectations of the ultimate end user (the gamers). And those expectations are different on consoles than they are PCs. Most of the time, that means (among other things) that a game that works great on the console will be WAY too easy on the PC.

Personally, I don't really care about this, even though I'm almost exclusively a PC gamer. I'm happy if I get a port of a major title that just took the time to clean up the interface and allows customization of controls. I just find myself playing most modern games on "hard" by default rather than "normal", like I used to.

My only real problems with steps like this are the long-term implications. The biggest being that a lot of the best developers will just stop thinking big, or at least will think smaller than they otherwise would if they weren't focused on consoles exclusively.

Except for the first few months to a year of a particular console's release, gaming PCs are simply much, much more capable machines. It's not just about inputs and graphics quality, it's about storage space and memory and network integration (although the latter is finally catching up in consoles). Developers just aren't taking advantage of the hardware, the software, and the integration of the computer like they used to, and that leads inevitably to less ambitious goals and less ambitious titles.

In the grand scheme of life, this is a little, niggling concern. But it really is a kind of dilution of the most successful and modern form of art/entertainment/creative activity.
