(Scientific American) Unlikely
Scientists claim "magic" is causing emissions from galactic core. I mean "dark matter." Yeah, "dark matter."

Ah, dark matter. The most unscientific scientific idea in modern science.

Do you understand that we're talking about dark matter colliding in outer space!?

I prefer the old term for dark matter - luminiferous aether.

Not the same thing.

The aether was the proposed medium in which electromagnetic waves propagated.

The really awesome thing about science... is that when they do figure out just what exactly causes things to behave differently than the equations would anticipate (that which is currently being attributed to "dark matter"), they will revise their equations, revise their hypothesis, and ultimately build a body of theories to better explain the universe.

They won't cling to dark matter once they know what is actually out there causing emmissions from galactic cores... unless... of course... it actually is dark matter.

This dark matter and dark energy business are getting awfully close to "The sun is the chariot wheel of Apollo".

"Our current understanding of physics can't explain why X does Y. We think we have it down, but when we do the calculations we think we know, they don't work. So obviously, our understanding is correct but there must be some thing out there that we can't detect that will make our calculations correct. We will call this dark matter and dark energy."

Mkay, done with my calculations.

-Hey Al, you're off by an order of magnitude.

Well, ya. I added a constant in though. We're cool.

1. How can an idea be "unscientific"?
2. What is "unscientific" about dark matter?

/3. How is scarequotes formed?

That's not entirely how it works...

It's more like...

Hey we keep seeing this same anomoly in calculations involving XYZ... each time it is the same number by a factor of Y... I wonder what it is? The fact it keeps showing up and in the same proportions seems to indicate it is a substance with a quality proportional to Y.

Go look up the Oil Drop test and how scientists managed to figure out the mass of an electron. It's the same sort of inductive reasoning, and not nearly as mystical as you're making it out to be.

Dark Matter isn't "magic". What's so hard to understand about the idea that there's matter out there that we can't see with our current technology? Our instruments aren't that good, and we're only able to see something if it either gives off energy itself, or blocks energy coming from something else.

I wonder if the "vacuum" of space really is a vacuum... They should do an experiment where they can see if a vacuum can cause this "gravitational lensing". Maybe dark matter lies in the vacuum?

*shrug*
