The really awesome thing about science... is that when they do figure out just what exactly causes things to behave differently than the equations would anticipate (that which is currently being attributed to "dark matter"), they will revise their equations, revise their hypothesis, and ultimately build a body of theories to better explain the universe.

They won't cling to dark matter once they know what is actually out there causing emmissions from galactic cores... unless... of course... it actually is dark matter.

This dark matter and dark energy business are getting awfully close to "The sun is the chariot wheel of Apollo".

"Our current understanding of physics can't explain why X does Y. We think we have it down, but when we do the calculations we think we know, they don't work. So obviously, our understanding is correct but there must be some thing out there that we can't detect that will make our calculations correct. We will call this dark matter and dark energy."

That's not entirely how it works...

It's more like...

Hey we keep seeing this same anomoly in calculations involving XYZ... each time it is the same number by a factor of Y... I wonder what it is? The fact it keeps showing up and in the same proportions seems to indicate it is a substance with a quality proportional to Y.

Go look up the Oil Drop test and how scientists managed to figure out the mass of an electron. It's the same sort of inductive reasoning, and not nearly as mystical as you're making it out to be.

Dark Matter isn't "magic". What's so hard to understand about the idea that there's matter out there that we can't see with our current technology? Our instruments aren't that good, and we're only able to see something if it either gives off energy itself, or blocks energy coming from something else.

A lot of what hawking says lacks a lot of evidence and the only reason he's the most famous physicist is because he is crippled and makes wild claims. The better physicists are kind of peeved by that.

Hawking is universally considered to be a great theoretical physicist by ... these guys called ... physicists. Clearly not everyone agrees with everything he says -- a side effect of being on the cutting edge -- but no one is saying that he has not accomplished quite a bit.

Admittedly being crippled has helped him become famous. After all being one of the top theoretical physicists (or top anything) in spite of being crippled is a terrific human interest story. And if someone is peeved, let ask if they would trade being famous for being forever stuck in a chair, unable to lift an arm, and have to use a machine so people can understand them.

Antimatter 2009-11-04 03:59:51 PM
Oh Dark matter.

the weird thing about it is we don't see it, but they think it's there based off it' gravity/etc effecting other things.

TheMysteriousStranger 2009-11-04 04:10:48 PM
Adjective Bird Whiskey: Ah, dark matter. The most unscientific scientific idea in modern science.

It's existence is inferred by the deep speculation called the theory of gravity. And it results in predictions that can be tested and indeed some of them have come up positive. Meanwhile the alternatives have not done so well in the testing department.

Just because you can't see it does not make it unscientific. That we don't know exactly what it is, does not make it unscientific. Some ideas of what it is will face experiment when the Large Hadron Collider finally able to work at full power.

Maybe you are confusing dark matter with string theory hypothesis which is on the border of science and non-science. But at least its proponents are trying to find predictions that can be tested though they have had some difficulty. If they do, then it will be undisputedly science while it waits for the actual testing. If it never can then it will join the ranks of nonscientific ideas.

He does release findings with less evidence then most physicists would. A couple of years ago there was a survey given only to working physicists asking them to name the top 5 most influential living physicists and hawking did not make the list.

I'm not saying he isn't a genius. I am saying that his theories are often largely unsubstantiated and then taken as fact by a lot of people.

Dark matter is the phlogiston of our age. I'm sure scientists throughout history have taken their dipshiat theories of things they didn't understand very, very seriously.

gaspode 2009-11-04 04:37:23 PM
I used to think as you did. Then I talked to physicists at great length and read a lot, and now I understand Dark Matter properly. And guess what people, its a real thing which exists. WHAT it consists of is one of a (rapidly diminishing) list of things. Once you actually understand it it isnt even a wierd idea. Matter which does not interact with the electromagnetic or strong nuclear forces but does interact with gravity isnt exactly a hard concept is it? Multiple convergent sets of supporting data are not exactly speculation are they? The bullet cluster is not imaginary is it?

Oh and *YAWN* at the now seemingly obligatory jingoistic tosspot trying to make some kind of 'woo yeah our physicists are best' war out of academic debate between respectful colleagues. Guess what? A lot of your physicists are string theorists so I should definitely not go there if I were you..

FT Wiki:
In 1667, Johann Joachim Becher published his Physical Education, which was the first mention of what would become the phlogiston theory.
Mikhail Lomonosov attempted to repeat Robert Boyle's celebrated experiment in 1753 and concluded that the phlogiston theory was false.
The recognition of the relation between combustion and metabolism was a forerunner of the recognition that the metabolism of living creatures and combustion can be understood in terms of fundamentally related chemical processes.

So in less than 100 years a theory was put forth, tested, found to be false, and rejected. (With the bonus of adding to our knowledge in other areas) How is this "taking a dipshiat theory" seriously? Other than the fact that it was a testable hypothesis, I mean.

Either it exists or Newton AND Einstein are wrong. Given that there's nothing to indicate Newton or Einstein are wrong, well then, there's something out there that's causing some unexpected stuff.

I liked it alot. Lots of characters, pretty cool battle system, decent story. Not as good as Chrono Trigger (not much is) but definitely worth playing through.
