Sounds like someone is trying to make themselves feel better about no longer being popular.

actually she's making a point that while some people aim to be STARS because they are narcissistic nincompoops, other people aim to be ARTISTS and would create art even if it didn't bring them a cent.

I would be the happiest person on earth to just tour, make music and survive off it. i don't need to be rich, just want to have fun rocking out and being able to support myself, is that too much to ask?

i have no idea who joss stone is, but good for her!

FTA: The Fell in Love With a Boy hitmaker believes Lily is just a media personality - not a musician.

I'm confused, I thought this was about Joss Stone.

It's about Joss Stone and her opinion of Lily Allen and being a "rock star". You are thinking too much. Just let it be.

I know, but it's a White Stripes song. Joss Stone did not make it a hit.

No it's not. The White Stripes' version is called Fell in Love with a Girl.

She had a cover of it out at the same time that it was still charting with the White Stripes. Her whole career has been a joke that was dreamed up by a marketer somewhere.

Joss Stone is like Linda Ronstadt, except that Joss Stone can't sing.

Also, Linda Ronstadt was popular for more than two weeks.

I'd consider only changing 'girl' to 'boy' throughout the lyrics to still be a cover. Lyrics sites are your friend. Link1 (new window) and Link2 (new window)

nicoffeine: Yeah, I'm sure she never bought anything she didn't need.

It's only been in the last 100 years that musicians could depend on replicatable media for another income stream. Just like all innovations, this one will run it's course and musicians will once again have to rely on performing, not how many copies they can schlep. Maybe she has bought some things she hasn't needed, but the reality is that less and less musicians will be able to enjoy that luxury with such reckless abandon.

i've been a fine-dining line cook for six years (with no culinary arts education and no goddamn intention of becoming a chef), and i've been a no-money-havin' musician for ten. i'm glad i missed the chef/cook article, because it would probably piss me off.
/keep your heads out of the kitchen, folks. just because you've watched a season of top chef doesn't make you an expert.

The money will be there.

The dollar you make per album is substantially less than the $10k you make per tour date.

Step 1: Make good music and let everyone listen to it (FOR FREE)
Step 2: Have fans come to your show
Step 3: Profit

The cost of production has become so affordable that artists -- true artists -- no longer need labels to make an album. If the musician world pulls together and supports each other (the big guy propelling the little guy), everyone wins, the labels lose, and we can all start appreciating music instead of the current PR bullcrap being shoved down our collective mouths.

Go Joss!

I don't think you would have been pissed. They were essentially saying that people like Rachel Ray are called "celebrity chefs" when in actuality they just prepare food and present a pretty face for the army of chefs behind them.

I'd penis her thoroughly. Found it hilarious how she took the role of Anne of Cleves in The Tudors, but I suppose getting an actual ugly chick to do it would've been a bit harsh.

Funny that someone who can't hold a tune and rips off other people songs to turn around and sell as her own "original" work is blasting someone that actually can hold a tune well and has creative and fun music.

Lily Allen sings great live. Joss Stone is pathetic and needs to pick on people with real talent just to stay in the tabloids.

I don't know what you'd have to give her to make her think you were a brother, but that's what it would take.

Who's Oasis and who's Blur in this one?

dominick 2009-11-04 02:39:32 PM
when something is for sale, people make money. musicians can make money when they sell music, tickets, merchandise, etc. if you were a musician, would you rather have someone else make all the money for your talent and hard work while you're just getting by?

/piracy; bootlegs

Good points, to be sure...but trust me, the vast, vast majority of bands aren't making anywhere near $10K per gig, even those that are touring. They're playing at small venues for modest door charges, hoping that no unexpected expenses (like a van breakdown) destroy any chance they have of just breaking even. Hoping that they sell enough t-shirts and CDs to cover the next day's breakfast and lunch on the road. Hoping that maybe, just maybe, all this on-a-shoestring touring will combine with non-stop social media whoring and take them to the next level...where $10K tour dates are at least visible on the horizon (if not actually a reality). I've done the shoestring tour thing. It's intense, memorable...and it gets old a lot faster than you might think.

My own project? I put a decent amount of stuff out there for free, and make the rest (singles and whole albums) available on iTunes, Rhapsody, etc. It sells...a little. I do a small run of "hardcopy" CDs (not a good economy of scale, but better than getting stuck with caseloads that don't sell). I don't expect to break even because I don't do live shows (yet...that's in the works!). I'm putting together a live version of this stuff not because I expect to be able to do it for a living, but because I just dig the shiat out of performing live.

Ask yourself, would I still be pursuing this music 'career' if the most you could ever make was 50k a year?

If not, you want to be a rock star not a musician.

And actually, looks are what Joss Stone is known for, so ironic that she is making fun of the singing of another artist. I've never even heard a Joss Stone performance, but i heard Lilly and thought she had a beautiful singing voice.

When we have nothing left to give
There will be no reason for us to live
But when we have nothing left to lose
You will have nothing left to use
We owe you nothing you have no control
Merchandise keeps us in line
Common sense says it's by design
What could a businessman ever want more
than to have us sucking in his store
We owe you nothing
You have no control
You are not what you own
