Uh, I wasn't aware there was any RAPID transportation in Philadelphia. There is definitely slow and shiatty transportation though.

And if someone chimes in with the whole "unions are good as a whole because they offer better job security so the people spend more" crap I will have to track them down and beat them with their keyboard. Better job security should be because of exemplary work; otherwise it leads to lazy work ethic caused by a false sense of entitlement. These people don't work in chains for a whip-lashing slave lord.

FTFA: Denise Lolu was on the train behind the R5 and was told she'd be stuck for at least a couple of hours. Instead, she started the trek from 55th and Lancaster to 17th Street.

"So I don't have to go to the gym tonight in 26 minutes," she laughed.

Yeah because knowing you could be fired for a whim or because someone decides to blow the boss for a promotion, which would put you and yours out of your house and make you lose your credit history and possessions, is much healthier for a worker.

This. Unions are a fantastic and essential idea on paper. Unfortunately most of them take it too far. But there's nothing you can do, you just have to take the bad with the good, just as you can't start changing the rules of a democracy when someone with ideas you don't like is going to be elected.

That's somewhat true, but they are worse than worthless now. Almost everything they worked for back in the day has been translated into law. Now they are just fighting to get more while working less in their largely unskilled overpaid jobs, to the detriment of everyone else in society (talking about public unions here). If a lady told you that her husband beats her every night, but she stays with him because he was good to here when they were first married 90 years ago, you'd tell her she was crazy. I'm telling you your crazy.

THIS

without the unions we, the workers, would be in a total world of shiat.

that doesn't mean some unions don't become the type of abuser power unions were meant to fight. A balance is supposed to be struck, and when one of the parties in a situation gets the upper hand in power the other side is inevitably going to be screwed.

many many unions work well, work hard, etc - they don't abuse their power. you just don't hear about them

many many companies treat their workers well, pay them fairly, don't try to screw them over. you just don't hear about them.

some companies try to screw their workers over, you hear about them.
some unions screw the company over, you hear about them.

Thank unions for saving the lot of us from real demeaning conditions, and thank employers who like to treat their workers very well for unions not having unchecked power*

* for example unions wanted to get programmers to unionize.. but they've never managed it because of companies, generally, paying programmers well. even the companies that are WTF-factories.

Try working for the largest private employer in this country and negotiating your own benefits and promotions. They tell their employees to try public option health care because the company health coverage is too expensive.

And of course what's best for you is always what's best for everyone else. That's what made this country great.

Labor unions never made up more than a fraction of the workforce. Even at the height of union influence, scarcely more than a third of workers were represented by unions, and many of those were fairly ineffectual.

Besides which, even if true, so what? An institution that is valuable in one era isn't necessarily valuable in another, and in fact can be detrimental if circumstances change enough.

punkhippie 2009-11-04 02:27:24 PM
Weekends and the end of 16-hour days and child labor were brought about by unions. And they did it with lots and lots of violence (and some political work). Because that is what it took.

If the union set that train on fire, fine w/me. Nobody was hurt but lots of people were inconvenienced. That's the point. The questions are, in today's labor market, do we need the union guys more than they need us? How skilled/replaceable is their labor? And how much do they have the public on their side?

Questions the union guys may want to ask themselves before they take things any further.

They ring up people at cashiers and stock shelves, things that any high school graduate in this country could do (theoretically). Learn a skill set if you want benfits that cost $5k extra a year. The reason those employees have trouble negotiating is becuase they don't bring a lot to the table. Gonna walk? Speaking as a person who used to take SEPTA commuter trains to work everyday for 3 years, and would often be late because SEPTA couldn't even stay on time with a metronome, I say FARK SEPTA. They are the most inefficient and self-righteous public transport org I could ever imagine. I forget if it was the city or the state, but one once tried to audit SEPTA to figure out how they could possibly be so horrible with money and continuously inconvenience their customers. SEPTA said no. Just, no.

Neither of my grandparents worked in chains for a whip-lashing slave lord, and this was well before unionization of the trucking business. What they did at home with my grandmothers is their business.

"No lay off" clause, guaranteed 12% raise over the next 5 years, a pension and generous health benefits? Wow, what a crappy offer by the city. Clearly these people who are unable to even provide me with change for my fare or assist me in any fashion are deserving of my sympathy.

Meh, the union can go DIAF. The city is broke and they have the balls to demand a 4% raise each year and no increase in health costs? How about they come back to reality and realize that most people outside of their bubble are happy enough that their wages are staying the same or that they even have a paycheck.

There are thousands of unemployed in the Philly region, each that could probably do the job of these idiots with 12 hours of training.

Phelps Dodge Mercantile, 1970's. They may not have used script but you shopped at PD Mercantile or your boss let you hear about it. It affected your job. And some of that labor force was unionized.

But go ahead and put your trust in private enterprise. How's your home value? How's your 401K doing? Aren't you glad Bush wasn't able to privatize Social Security. Putting any kids through college?
