I think you really have to reach to find an anti-Obama agenda, which is probably why the teabaggers will flock to the show. The aliens actions really aren't that different from the original series. It's no less silly than the people who claimed that 300 was Republican propaganda.

Don't they cure cancer in the original series and offer to give everyone healthcare....? I think it would be way cooler if the producers decided to go Half Life 2, with scattered bands of resistance fighters going after the aliens and their human collaborators.

Didn't the creators come out recently because of this and say they voted for Obama and all this is bullshiat?

"The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy."

No, that doesn't sound familiar at all. That would make us racist - or at least specieist...

And Mentat, thanks for your gay subtext.

This, and the fact that the fascism angle works much better in the Reagan Cold War era of the original series. (Fighting fascism in the polarized America of the Aughts means Glenn Beck and David Icke are your heroes. Yikes.)

What really needs to be said about the show is that they've got a good cast shackled with bad scripts and even worse direction. The show went on a "creative hiatus" for a while, and now just announced their third showrunner; it's just an awkward premise poorly done.

Ragin' Asian 2009-11-04 04:16:28 AM
Actually, about half way through, I was getting an "OMG Lizardpipplez" Ickes vibe. I really wanted to like it, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next episode is about the Bildebergs

I think you really have to reach to find an anti-Obama agenda, which is probably why the teabaggers will flock to the show.

Any actual sign of that happening, or is this just a little whargle?

What's funny about this when conservatives complain about liberal biases in the media, and give some actual examples, liberals pooh pooh it. Yet some liberals are saying the show has an anti-Obama subtext, despite the fact that the producers are the usual H'wood liberals themselves.

Only to those who buy the left/liberal propaganda that Republicans are latent fascists while liberals and lefties are actually for freedom. I personally love my freedom of ownership and self-determination diminished by having my money taken for a wasteful, unfair "cash for clunkers" program.

And do you really think that there's any overlap between the fans of Glenn Beck and David Icke? I'm sure Beck would describe Icke as a bigoted nutcase, while to Icke Beck is a lizard or lizard toady simply by virtue of being a prominent commentator on the leading cable news outlet.

This just in...

Obama is of the lizard people,
whew! That explains a LOT!

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2009-11-04 04:42:50 AM
So, after watching the pilot, David Icke is apparently right about everything. Holy FARK!

Seriously, though, and just as one example among many others of the "seemingly benevolent aliens act as the savior of humanity before trying to kill us" story...the Kanamit in the episode of "The Twilight Zone" called "To Serve Man" also lured humanity into its plot by solving all our problems - setting up invisible forcefields around every country to make war obsolete, curing cancer, solving world hunger, etc. That was broadcast in 1962, long before Barack Obama became president.

/that was, however, the year AFTER he was born in Kenya
//coincidence...OR PROPHECY?!?
///the short story on which "To Serve Man" was based was published in 1950, but that doesn't go with the joke

NobleHam 2009-11-04 04:46:20 AM
Sounds like it's more sympathetic towards David Icke.

Chimperror2 2009-11-04 04:52:55 AM
So why is opposing nationalized health care being linked to birthplace nutcases? If you oppose Obama, your a nutcase? According to Slate you are.

grotto_man: Only to those who buy the left/liberal propaganda that Republicans are latent fascists while liberals and lefties are actually for freedom.

The notion that the latent fascism of the American right is left-wing propaganda is just right-wing propaganda, that nobody takes seriously except right wingnuts of the sort who think the Cash for Clunkers was an unconstitutional infringement of their rights of ownership and self-determination.

QED

Are you only now realizing that there's assholes both sides? "liberals" in general aren't objecting to this, a few butthurt whiny douches are.

The first half was awful but the second half was a lot better than the first. Unfortunately it's like saying they stopped hitting my balls with a sledgehammer and start just throwing baseballs at them.

I watched about half of it before I got bored and did something else. Sad, really, because I liked the original and was looking forward to it.

This is as stupid as the people who tried to pull the same crap with Star Wars and the Bush administration.

Shut your brains off and watch it like the people who made it expected you to do instead of trying to read in to it.

The reviewer answers his own question about the bias of the show, midway through the article. It's not about ideology. It's about careerism. Executive producers and producers don't have ideologies. They are mindless automatons. They're like ATMs with penises and poor senses of humor.

Birther... no...

Anti-Obama?

Well yes their is a critique on Obama but its a critique on Obama relevant to how power groups in the media and other institutions come together with government. And how devotion and hero worship -without a reason for trust and support- is a bad thing.

Those lessons are important and their is anti-obama edge to them but its bigger then Obama

No, you can not. It's a new era. EVERYTHING, no matter what, MUST have a political context that fits neatly into the Left vs. Right narrative. Don't like it? Well it sucks to be you, doesn't it.

On the show, the underground resistance claims all recent political events have been orchestrated by alien sleeper agents disguised as humans. They are alleged to have softened up humanity by starting meaningless wars, economic catastrophes, political unrest, etc. to make the Earth willing to accept help from beyond the stars. So I took that to mean Bush, Cheney, Wall Street Bankers & Obama are all aliens.
