Dufus: Don't I remember that being said about Vista?

I generally dislike the "Hi I'm a PC" ad, but I got a good laugh the first time I saw the one that's airing now.

"Windows 7 won't have any of the problems Windows Vista had. Trust me."

"...won't have any of the problems Windows XP had."

"...won't have any of the problems Windows Me had."

"...won't have any of the problems Windows 95 had."

"...won't have any of the problems Windows 2 had. Trust me."

Only funny because it's true.

Just upgraded to Win7 Ultimate - shortest upgrade time ever. When I installed xp years ago, it took nearly a day to install the software, update drivers, download patches, blah blah blah. Took less than 2 hours this time.

We'll see about stability though.

Microsoft jumped through hoops to keep Windows backwards compatible with older software, and this software includes viruses.

Mac OS X is a fundamentally different framework than previous version of the OS, so the thirty-odd viruses written for the Mac don't run on any current Mac hardware. Then again, no Mac software from before 2001 will run on current Mac hardware either.

Microsoft has such a large market share that it can't make those sorts of moves. And because of that it will probably always have more viruses than the Mac because old viruses run on current hardware.

This isn't really news except to the most rabid fanboys.

I just did my clean install of Windows 7 and it's running perfectly fine. Of course, I don't have any DX10 games to test on it yet, so that will be the real test.

In regards to TFA...Of course you need to run AV on it...WTF? It's still a Windows system.

I've been running W7 for 3 months now. Love it so much more than XP. Rock solid, everything's compatible, etc.

Tried to install Win7 on my 8 month old PC. BSOD during first install, then it won't stay up for more than a minute in non-safe mode before BSODs. Latest drivers for everything. Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't show /dev/sda during install. XP doesn't recognize my drives. Only OS that works is Vista. f my life.

I have never gotten a virus in my entire life. I attribute that to not being a retard with computers. Oh, and Windows 7 is great.

Obvious article is obvious. Viruses are apart of using a Windows OS. If you want to look at porn all day, ad-blocker/AVG/googlechrome ftw.

/Or honestly when I have the cash for it, I'll buy a Mac specifically for porn and my iTunes collection.

I am betting you have sata drives. Find the vista drivers for your sata controller. They will work in 7 and save you the hassles.

Ya if your doing the 32 bit upgrade to 32 bit, or 64 bit to 64. Trying doing a 32 bit upgrade like i did. 43 - 64 is a bit harder. but I found it to be work it. No issues and my system runs pretty damn fast (quad core w/ 8 gb memory). On Vista Ultimat it was ok, but in Win 7, damn this hardware can move damn fast.

Try it on a Mac. Don't get me wrong--I'm not saying you should buy a Mac, but the people who develop iTunes for Windows are either A) incompetent to the point I think they're the people who moonlight and make MusicMatch is their spare time or B) Apple meddles and makes them release crap.

iTunes for Mac is like a totally different app. It ran faster on my 2.0 Ghz MacBook with 1 GB of RAM than it did on my 2.8 Ghz PC desktop with 2 GB of RAM.

Windows 7 is awesome. Clean install time on my desktop: 18:36 from power on to desktop. Didn't come with drivers for my Linksys wireless adapter which was immediately fixed the first time I connected it to the internet.

Thing I'm disliking with W7-64 and aftermarket firewalls/av in particular is there's so few options. Apparently a lot of the underpinnings have changed from Vista to W7.

Perhaps, but it doesn't change the fact that Microsoft says pretty much that exact same thing every time.

TimeWaste: Since the service pack I've had absolutely no problems with Vista on my laptop. But after reading comments here I'm more & more convinced to do a fresh install. It's not broken, I do not need to fix it... but I like new things.

I've never done an upgrade on a Microsoft OS except my very first migration: 3.11 to 95. Never again, I decided. On my home system I used 98, 98 SE, Me, 2000, XP and Vista and I refused to do an upgrade and did a clean install every time after that. When Apple wanted me to an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro, I winced and went ahead with, and it was the smoothest OS install I've ever had. I completely forgot I'd upgraded and not done a clean install.

This is true. Running Linux won't help if you're the kind of person who will follow instructions like "okay...sudo ... passwd....and type password twice? Okay!". The point isn't whether or not that exact trick works, but whether or not someone will do whatever you tell them. And if you have idiots on staff, like 100% of companies of at least 20 people, you need antivirus to cover that idiot's ass.

That said, run Linux. It works, and the more people use it the more industry will actually support it. Why is everyone so excited to run off and pay $300 for a new OS when they're computer would work better for free? Probably the same reason people pay interest on credit card balances.

I like mine better. There are some inherent flaws to how Windows treats users and some of the architectural decisions Microsoft went with that leave some fairly large security holes. Having sex isn't inherently dangerous, while driving drunk is. You're only lucky for so long when driving drunk.

I can name a half-dozen different instances in which you don't have to have been a "retard" to have gotten a virus on Windows. Zero-day exploits, pre heavily emphasized updates.

I think you mean only pay interest on CC balances, yes? Or is your implication that only stupid people carry a balance on a CC?

Anyway, I'm an IT professional, and every year or so I get a hankering to try Linux again. This has been going on for about six or seven years, so I've been through a lot of history and a lot of distros. Linux has a long way to go until it's user friendly and convenient on the desktop. Ubuntu is getting closer with every release, but it's not there yet.

Here's my gold standard on OS usage: if you have to drop to a command line to do a common task (for example, installing video drivers), you're not there yet.

Because it doesn't just "work," and it definitely doesn't work better for my purposes than Windows.

So they completely ignored the message that says, "Windows 7 does not come with a virus scanner... please install one", and then claim there is something wrong when they then throw 10 viruses at it?

Wow... Next they'll have an paragraph about how if you unplug the network cable, it won't connect to the internet and the Mac fanbois will clap and say, "Oh yes... that's rich... bravo... bravo", before dry humping an 8 by 10 of Steve Jobs while grunting, "it just works... it just works."

And for the record... Win7 kicks ass, but if you need a virus scanner for it (like Microsoft suggests), there are plenty available. Even some free ones.
