(MSN) Cool Ever dreamed of owning a so-so beer company? Pabst is up for sale again. Just think of it, you could be swimming in a pool of Colt 45 while you try to drown the memory of why you bought the company in the first place   (articles.moneycentral.msn.com) divider line 87

It's a great time to sell. They're making the transition to sales beyond the hipster community as their increasing sales growth shows. Once fratboys start buying it, PBR will immediately revert back to uncool status and sales will decline.

If I were sure I could trick hipsters into drinking this swill, a-la PBR, I'd get financing and buy it. But I'd bet there are some things even a hipster in search of the perfect irony won't do.

I would have all the cans say "I'm a hipster douchebag" with an arrow pointing to the mouth of the can.

PBR has its rightful place in dive bars and is not bad at all, though it may lead to evil deeds. Long story, but it tastes fine out of a can and fills the "$2 mystery beer" role to a T.

Colt 45 is as good as any other malt liquor, which isn't to say that it's "good," but it does the trick that the consumer expects.

Old Mud, well it is Old Mud... perfectly designed as a companion for fishing on inland waterways. I don't know why but that's what it is for.

However, Schlitz, or more specifically Schlitz Ice is the unquestionably worst beer I've ever sipped. Not even as a college freshman dying for a buzz could I drink more than two pulls off that free can of beer. Plus, its name sounds terrible.

That and you gotta admit it does go well with cheap, spicy Asian food. I include Halal in that category, too. I wonder why they're having trouble unloading the enterprise?

PBR is the biggest seller where I work. I usually burn though a couple of cases a night of it. Granted it's 2 bucks a bottle.

Not a lot of hipsters either they have moved to Stella.

Congrats on buying our company! Here is our secret recipe for PBR:

1) seltzer water
2) piss

Essentially no hard assets. In-process inventory and receivables can be financed, but the next piece of bank financing likes to be secured by hard assets, not trademarks. And Pabst doesn't own any breweries, real estate, etc. The lack of (or increased expense of) that layer of financing means putting up additional equity, which in turn means lower returns.

Also, everyone secretly thinks the whole hipster thing is a fad and once those guys get a steady gig they'll switch to microbrews or wine or vodka out of a crystal skull bottle.

I don't see how anybody can drink PBR, even on a dare.

Gives me a headache and makes me nauseous. I can't even get through one 12oz can without making for the toilet and a bottle of excedrin.

PBR is the only cheap beer to do this to me. Tastes like poison and has similar effects. Natural [anything], Bud, Coors, Blitz, MGD, Milwaukee's Best, none of them bother me and some of them are even great for tossing back en-masse for a cheap night of drunkenness.

As far as taste goes, I'll stick with Beast Ice.

PBR is fine in my book. Tastes fine, cheap, and gets the buzz going.

A couple weeks ago, my local hang out took out Shiner Bock and replaced it with PBR. I was very irritated. I tried it. Meh. Thankfully, enough people complained and Shiner Bock is now back on tap.

PBR, IMO, is better than Miller or Bud and at a much cheaper price - why not? Plus I enjoy drinking beer from a can.

Perhaps American Apparel™ or Urban Outfitters™ could buy it - it jives well with the hipster clothing they sell...

The answer to your question: your experience is fairly unique.

Rapmaster2000: I have not seen Schaffer in 15 years.

Schaeffer Light was a staple at band practice for me back in '99... ice cold and cheap. We'd rotate quality levels week by week, but Schaeffer was much better than I'd anticipated, for the price that is.

We just had one yesterday... people's indignations are all worn out.

It tastes the exact same as the cheaper Miller High Life to me, which I can also get in cans. If you're gonna drink crappy watery beer, you might as well go by price because the taste is virtually nonexistent.

Clarence Potter 2009-11-03 03:47:01 PM
Manfred J. Hattan: Essentially no hard assets.

I glossed right over that bit in TFA. Best option they have is an existing brewery or bottling company snags them because yeah, goodwill will not gonna pay the rent. Would it make sense, at all, for some regional microbrewery (yeah, I know... I mean like Anchor Steam or whatever) to grab this label? PBR is, dare I say it... iconic.

Shiner is pisswater. If you want a real Texas beer, drink Live Oak.

I have yet to be charged more than $2.50 for a PBR. I have seen the $3 24oz. can though.

Most places are doing $2 High Life right now, so I'm on that kick.

I say this as a former frat guy: The last time I looked, which would probably be 2004, a pallet of PBR was ~$150 more than a pallet of either Natty or Beast. Since other people were going to be drinking most of it, it wasn't worth it. I'll bet the price difference is higher now.

When did PBR become hip? No one I know ever thought it was cool, and I've been drinking it since I before I was in kindergarten. It's great for camping, barbecue, hot days, etc. But hip? Never.

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to bar prices, but even I know that $5 for a bottle of PBR is a rip-off. Usually, I order liquor of choice and soda water. I want to maintain the skinny, and it's not worth it to me to pay more for 100s of extra calories. Very rarely do I order beer or a fruity/chocolately cocktail.

Exception made for O'Fallon Wheach... that stuff is awesome!

Colt 45 - Works everytime!

Prefered Malt liquor, when at days end only a malt liquor on the drive home will do.
