ne2d: Well, yeah--that's kind of what opposition parties do.

But it's not what they are supposed to do. Theoretically they are suppose to try and make the country better, not just oppose everything. If they were opposing because they don't like the legislation is one thing, but just to stop the Democrats is something else entirely.

Except that the headline not only isn't an accurate summary of Hatch's remarks, it isn't even an accurate summary of Crooks & Liars' (tendentious and misleading) spin on Hatch's remarks.

Someone needs to save up this bit of footage and blanket the country with ads containing it, starting around, oh October 1st, 2010. And containing phrases like "The GOP puts Party before country" and "The GOP wanted you to die to score political points." Probably better phrased than that, but it is obvious that the GOP has absolutely no interest in making America a better place because party means more than anything else.

If you tolerate this kind of behavior from Democrats it will just encourage more of it.

We don't want that.

It must be stopped.

So....

Hatch is saying that they're stopping the Democrats because the Public Option plan might actually succeed, and if that happens, the body politik will fall helplessly in love with the Dems for all time, thus destroying the GOP?

Unless I forgot something... the bureaucracy of the Federal Gov't is intended [rip me for being naive, it's deserved] to be apolitical, staying out of this crap as much as possible to do their jobs.

This is why political parties are a farking stupid idea.

Maybe elect people based on their actual opinions and abilities? As it stands, you could run Jesus (D) vs Satan (R) and 30% of the country (at least) would still be yelling "Hail Satan!"

And then probably bashing Jesus for his liberal beliefs and calling him a secret Jew, and pointing out that Satan has a great deal more experience in top level organization and management.

Prevent the Democrats from succeeding in taking away more power and more money from the people and giving it to themselves?

Sounds like a great idea, because that's all Health Care Reform is about for the Democrats.

and how exactly does providing healthcare for everyone = giving it to themselves? you're implying that the only people paying taxes are people who don't want reform and only those who want it will benefit from it. which is the case in either regards.

keytronic 2009-11-03 02:09:59 PM
The United States already has some of the highest labor costs in the world. Our inefficient health care delivery system that is directly tied to employment makes us even less efficient.

Real health care reform is tied to a robust economy. And the United States cannot remain a military superpower in the world without having a superior economy.

Ergo. By blocking healthcare reform, the republicans are making America less safe and providing aid and comfort to the enemy for petty political reasons.

And THIS is why republicans need to be ran out of town on a rail. They're not at all concerned about the well being of the public. They admittedly don't want health care reform not, as they publicly claim, because it will fail but rather because they know it will work and don't want it counted as "the other teams" victory. This point can't be hammered home enough. If we as a people want what is best for us we need identify those who are not working in our best interest and remove them at the ballot box.
This, of course, goes for Democrats as well since there are many of them who also answer to corporate interest.

That would fit if his argument were that the health care reform would lead to a collapse of our economy or a ruining of our health care system or something, and must be stopped.

But what he said was it might lead to people relying more on government and being beholden to Democrats, and we just can't have that.

Doesn't matter if something may be better for the country as long as the other side is the one getting the credit.

You know, I would not be surprised in the least to find out neither of you guys have any idea what this plan is about, how it will benefit you personally, or what detrimental effects it may have against you personally. You're just running your mouths reciting talking points you get from right wing nutjobs. You sound like ignorant fools.

So, at work today I noticed a Chyron on Fox News (the actual, post-9am News) that said that the Republicans unveiled their own healthcare reform bill or some such... yet I haven't heard anything about it. I figured it would've been on the AP/Fox/CNN wires that I have access to, but nothing. Just that one lower third on Fox News this morning.

Did anyone else see it or was I delusional with boredom?

I mostly agree with your first two thoughts, however disagree that the proposed health care plan helps. Your final thought is just BS and you know it.

startan3 2009-11-03 02:16:57 PM
I've been saying it for ages, todays Republicans are not just the opposition party, they are the party of opposing everything. Which will only be a winning strategy as long as they're opposing something that ends up working out poorly, or something that they can successfully block where there is no negative result. As soon as the economy improves, and a good healthcare system gets passed, they're farked, because all the rational people will remember is "these people fought it tooth and nail." And while they might have a good 30% of the population as their base (and its not growing), 30% does not get you very far on the national stage.

Phil Herup 2009-11-03 02:17:07 PM
This is a good thing, because the Democrats have a lot of crappy ideas about what to do with health care insurance problems.

I think the Republican health care plan is for Joe Pesci to rub his eyes, stand up, point at the Democratic plan, and announce "Uh... everything that guy just said is bullshiat... Thank you."

It's on the GOP Site. John Boehner was on CNN touting it just yesterday.

Unfortunately, it has no additional details than they've had for the past 10 months. When pressed for numbers about cost, percent of new folks covered, how it will lower health care expense, etc, Boehner admitted they hadn't actually thought about that stuff much because, well, it "isn't their job."
