I know, I can't believe they registered as Republicans either, or for that matter, live in Iowa. Why would a person do that?

boy, the so-called liberal media has really been lambasting obama lately. yet the guy still has a 54% approval rating ( though a CNN piece on that even managed to spin that as a negative).

patrick767 [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 11:02:19 AM
Ok, so people had unrealistic views of Obama striding into Washington and instantly changing everything.

Go to Politifact's running tracker of Obama's promises to see some of the things he's accomplished so far. I'm not happy with everything he's done and I think he should have been taking much more of a lead role in pushing healthcare reform, but in many ways it's far too early to judge his performance.

Thoguh [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 11:02:40 AM
Being moderate sucks right now. On the Democratic side you've got people that want to spend, spend, spend, force lots of regulation down your throat, and hate people that are different than them. And on the Republican side, you have people that want to spend, spend, spend, force lots of regulation down your throat, and hate people that are different from them.

So I propose everybody re-read Federalist Papers #10, chill out, and stop being idealouges.

Which is why Obama's approval rating has consistently been at or above the 53% share of the vote he got. Yeah, that sounds like massive regret to me.

In Iowa, Ms. McAreavy fears that the president's health care plan will shortchange her Medicare benefits and mean infrequent mammogram examinations.

Ah, I understand the problem. She's a moron who believes in scare tactics.

Can we, seriously, stop making the fate of the country depend on Iowa and New Hampshire? It makes no sense at all, neither of those states have anything close to a representative population of the country as a whole.

I completely agree. I might start voting for them. That said, is beating a couple of sure losers an "accomplishment"? But I guess after John Kerry lost to a sure loser in '04 it could be seen that way.

Gamer Grrrl: would have voted for McCain in 2000

Ditto. Even though I didn't agree with him on everything, I thought he would have made a good President in 2000. A President McCain would have paid a lot of attention to a report in the summer of 2000 that al-Quadi was determined to attack. Maybe the attacks would've happened anyway, but he wouldn't have wasted years in Iraq while letting Afghanistan fall apart.

He changed a bit for 2008 but what really got me was his age. Add on 8 years to a POW, cancer survivor whose running mate was a person so completely unprepared to take the reigns of power if something happened to him (his father and grandfather were both dead by 72) and there was no way he was getting my vote.

And speaking of Palin, the GOP is not going to capitalize as much as they like with disappointed Obama voters if they keep scaring independents, moderate Republicans and conservative leaning Democrats away.

I voted McCain 2008, but was less than enamored with him after his "riding into DC to pass a spending bill when he'd campaigned on stopping stupid spending bills". It was pretty much decided by then, anyway.

One thing I can say about Obama...as long as he is alive, I don't have to live in fear that Joseph Biden will have access to the nuclear codes.

SchlingFocker [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 11:47:27 AM
What did you do?

I'll tell you what you did. You sat back for the last couple of decades and watched and smiled as your party was taken over by religious fundamentalists and racists.

You let Falwell, Limbaugh, and their ilk become the mouthpieces for the Republican party. You happily did that because they vocally criticized the people with whom you disagreed.

Now, your party is in shambles, and you have no group that represents your primary interests of fiscal conservancy and limited scope of government.

Go fark yourselves for being so stupid and short-sighted.

you know... bidden does have a permanent foot in his mouth. but he's also one of the most informed foreign policy wonks out there. i personally would have no problem having the nuclear "football."

and the more that i think of it, the thought of "maverick" mccain - a lifelong dice player - with the nuclear button scares the shiat out of me.

Yup. I just can't imagine what would possess a person to vote for McCain in '08 when they know that they're voting for Palin as well. Several of my friends who are normally apathetic about politics suddenly became quite interested and pro-active when it came to the election when she was given the VP nod. She scared the crap out of them. They went out to vote specifically to vote against her. If there was any doubt that McCain was being a complete and total puppet of the GOP in the last election, that doubt was obliterated when he chose such an incompetent running mate.

If any Republican could have won in 2008 given Bush's terrible approval numbers and a well run campaign by Obama, it was McCain 2000. McCain 2008 is the guy who showed up though.
