To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one-with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own.

So he's no better than the animals Peta says are our equals. What's their point?

I Said [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 11:00:54 AM
For historical reference, they spent years comparing slaughterhouses to the Holocaust. So at least now they're on the same planet.

Also: PETA is a bunch of assholes. Animal testing for medicine is wrong, except for insulin which a high ranking PETA official needs.

Killing animals is wrong, unless PETA does it. During 2008 PETA killed 95% of the dogs and cats it took in.

Thorak [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 11:09:32 AM
Not killing animals would lead to massive runs of starvation and environmental collapse as species we currently control run amok and destroy their ecosystems in the absence of predators.

Because that's what we are. We are apex predators. Incredibly efficient and adaptable ones. If we remove ourselves from that equation, we do just as much damage to the environment as we would by removing any other predators from their ecosystem.

It's an incredibly stupid idea from an environmental point of view, as any biologist could tell them.

I for one saw this coming the second I saw a clip of it on ESPN. PETA are farking loons.

I think they should give him an award for protecting people from a potentially rabid bat just as a screw you to PETA.

I doubt you could smack a bat like that without breaking its wings, and then it's as good as dead.

That said, fark PETA. I like bats, when they're outside eating mosquitoes. But they're some ugly motherfarkers.

End_Of_Line 2009-11-03 11:26:35 AM
I was wondering how long it would take for the PETA people to go all crazy about this. It was one bat that someone probably brought into the arena to be a smartaleck. That being said bats are fragile creatures and i am not sure how you would ever "humanely" capture one without injuring it.

That and it was one hell of a move to swat a bat out of the air. I have only ever seen it done by my cat before.

haha seriously. Animal rights activists have never been able to explain away the paradox that animals kill other animals. Unless you are gonna put them in animal jail for doing so, what you are talking about is not "rights" for animals. You don't know what that word means.

Or maybe they'll ratchet up the frequency and intensity of their stunts involving naked ladies. I'd be OK with that outcome, too.

ESPN is reporting that the bat survived and flew away.

That's why Ginobili has to go through a round of rabies vaccinations.

Bluestab 2009-11-03 11:44:47 AM
I'm a bit surprised it took Peta this long to weigh in on this. I figured they'd have issued a statement before the game ended. When they were replaying it over and over I could just see and hear the Peta folks having popping a collective blood vessel.

If Manu had picked it up off the floor and started ripping its wings off and then start practicing freethrows with it, then you can toss in the Vick Vick comparisons. Vick gave Peta a boost and they are going to run with it at every opportunity they can.

We used to get them in our building section at work...bats not Peta members. They'd come in through the truck loading bays. They can freak you out a bit but they really won't hurt you. They'd fly around a bit and eventually find their way out. If not, you'd find them darwinated in a corner a few days later. I doubt the Manu bat could have found its way out nearly as easy.

I'm fairly certain that PETA is attempting to break into the top 5 of "Best Trolls Ever IRL"

They biatch about everything. I'm surprised they haven't shown up at my doorstep for that goldfish that I killed because I gave it too much food when I was 6 years old.

We need a countering group to PETA.
Like PHAT. "People are Hungry and Animals are Tasty"
Our mission statement shall be to BBQ every piece of meat we can.

you have pee hands: I doubt you could smack a bat like that without breaking its wings, and then it's as good as dead.

he apparently had to get a rabies shot because it flew away when they took it outside (read it on deadspin i think, but i'm not 100% sure)

so, the bat was at least able to fly to some extent...

It looked like he hit it head on, so it was probably just knocked out. So now we have a retarded, brain damaged bat flying around somewhere.

I never got this either. The vast majority of times when people kill animals, we're far less cruel about it than an average cat. Even if Ginobili had killed the bat on the court, it would have been a much quicker and painless death compared to being nabbed by a cat.

I was fishing at dusk/dark this summer in a narrow channel. Thought I was getting decent bites/hits on my lure, but after a while realized it was the bats that were tearing around a foot above the water hitting my line.

/Cool story, I know

More related to the incident, Manu and the security guard should've kept the bat, killed it, and checked its brain for rabies, thus avoiding the precautionary shots.

these bats are gross. there's an underpass you have to walk through to get from one of the Alamodome parking lots to the dome, and there's a bat colony that lives there. It reeks of piss and shiat, and the sidewalk is completely covered in guano.

when i was in school, we used to get bats in the gyms every now and then. The bat in the at&t center was there since at least Friday, when it made an appearance at the Rampage hockey game, so no, no one brought it in.

Nyeeeehh...I hate PETA, but I actually agree with their shelter policy. No-Kill shelters are a pie-in-the-sky way to feel good, but they do very little to actually help animals. There is a shortage of shelter space as it is, which is part of the reason why euthanasia rates at normal shelters are so high. By refusing to put down any of their animals, No-Kill shelters are really just acting as larger versions of foster homes. No new animals can come in, because animals rarely go out. Foster homes are nice, but they aren't as needed as shelters.

As out of touch with reality as they typically are, I've always given PETA begrudging respect for being able to see the reality of the shelter situation.

I know the exact underpass you're talking about. Even if Manu killed the bat- which, by all reports, he didn't- it's not like he took out the one Mexican free-tail bat in San Antonio.

I donate money to Bat Conservation International. My driver's headcover is a bat. I think bats rock. I have no problem with Manu swatting a bat out of the air.

jpinksto 2009-11-03 07:20:51 PM
As close as that bat flew next to him, I'm surprised Manu didn't flop to the ground and writhe in agony trying to draw a foul.
