How does Congress have the authority to regulate the airline industry?

Exactly, who does that Reagan think he is messing with the air traffic controllers like that!

"Having fixed the economy, created jobs for all Americans, and ended crime, homelessness, and famine the world over, Congress finally tackles our long national nightmare of that one plane that didn't land on time the other day overshot the airport by 150 miles, endangered an already stressed air traffic control system, and created a potential fuel emergency because two dip-shiat pilots couldn't put their laptops down long enough to fly the plane"

From the track record of Congress this year?

That's about right.

Can we finally kill the fallacious argument that you are doing something wrong if you address a relatively minor issue when there are major issues still unresolved?

You're joking - right? When you get on the plane in one state, and get off in another, that's pretty much the very definition of "interstate commerce."

Yeah, but all of that government regulation stifles competition! If the government would just back out airline tickets would get cheaper because consumers would get a choice in how safe they want their airline to be.

/Am I doing it right?

At about 600 mph, 150 miles is 15 minutes.

Delta should charge each passenger a dollar for each minute and the government should get another dollar for their effort.

I bet they were having sex, which would make a harsh reaction from the government more or less inevitable.

Why in the world is congress getting involved in this?

The airline this happened on will work hard to insure this doesn't happen again due to the bad press it got.

There is no need for congress to get involved other than to look important...

Because the airline did such a bang up job the first time around, right?

jjorsett 2009-11-03 04:34:16 PM
A) I think that laptop story is probably bullshiat. How about we wait for the FAA investigation results before believing it?

B) We just spent a fortune reinforcing cockpits so that they're impenetrable. Pass whatever laws you want, but how is anyone going to know if they're using consumer electronics in there?

This is just another waste of time 'solution' that's unnecessary and unenforceable.

Farkin'round 2009-11-03 04:37:53 PM
I'm convinced those two pilots were on their laptops looking at pr0n.

dhudd 2009-11-03 04:43:19 PM
It was nice that the pilots gave all the passengers 300 extra frequent flier miles though.

JMMODE 2009-11-03 05:09:23 PM
Really, laptops? At least the government won't ban snakes, I love me some snakes. =====>~

Farkin'round: I'm convinced those two pilots were on their laptops looking at pr0n.

Based on what pilots earn, they were probably looking for a second job.

Work on only one problem a year, and fix nothing; that's not just Congress' track record this year, that's their farking mission statement.

Nucleus: Actually, I'm kind of glad congress is looking into this. We need to be sure that someone is... you know, flying the goddamned plane.

The free market will take care of it. Adam Smith's invisible hand will bat all of the unattended planes out of the sky, thus assuring that the pilots will never fly again. Behold the magnificent beauty of the free market!

joness0154 2009-11-03 07:54:47 PM
For those of you that don't think congress has the ability to regulate the airlines - you're probably right.

However, congress does write the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) that every pilot and airline must follow.

TownDrunk 2009-11-03 08:23:22 PM
I, for one, want Congress to worry about steroids in baseball first.

thamike 2009-11-04 07:23:52 AM
The political knee-jerk response to this is useless because the pilots' story is bogus.

That tired fark cliche' of "having fixed blah, blah, blah...." always gets me mad as well.

It's like having cancer and sarcastically saying "Having cured my cancer, I somehow found time to brush my teeth"
