talked about and slandered are two different things there bub

Sounds like he got suspended because he may have potentially committed slander. Claiming they are in heavy debt if they are not could cause them to have actual monetary losses. It does make sense that he got suspended if he is wrong.

I am so hoping that they fire Sileo. The guy is such a colossal douchebag. The Animal is your typical shiatty sports radio station with idiots named "Big Dog" and they always talk about going to their website to see pics of babes that they put up. The only thing I can even listen to on there anymore is Jim Rome.

i'll be interested to see how far they push this. if they really did lose that kind of cash, it won't be hard to figure out. Then this guy has a valid complaint.

You wont listen to the other sports guys because their douchbags, bu then you say you only listen to a nationally syndicated douchebag.

Way to stick to your guns.

I know what most people think about him but Rome is one guy I have a soft spot for. At most I get to listen to maybe an hour a week. If public radio in the Tampa area didn't suck so bad I would never even turn on WDAE.

Did you commit some sort of crime and this was the punishment? I think you have a good 8th Amendment case here.

You know Rome wasn't too bad until they decided to go all comedy skit with the show half the time. He does decent enough interviews, and when there's a sports take to be had, it's usually interesting enough.

But yeah, I just really don't need to hear Yackity Sax for 15 minutes of national radio airtime, thanks.

Agreed, I actually like his interviews. They seem more few and far between these days. Pretty much all I have ever heard Dan Cileo interview is Brad Culpepper, a lawyer and former Gators player who is his largest advertiser.

Sounds to me more as if he made up a bunch of crap he didn't have any reliable evidence to base it off of. He should probably be fired, not suspended.

/Actually, I'm fully in favor of anything that gets this clown off the radio and something decent on in the Tampa AM Sports slot.

Agreed on all counts.

Though if Sileo really did say "according to my source inside the SEC," he didn't commit any defamation like the Glazers are alleging (assuming he isn't making things up, which is entirely within his douchebaggy nature).

As for The Big Dog, he's a racist, sexist bigot. I've written about him before elsewhere.

Travis Rodgers tried to address this topic with Rome. Rome fired him after 14 years of loyal service.

And that's why the Jim Rome show is now run by a soap opera actor and is chock-ful of drops and morning zoo sound effects.

Puccio 2009-11-03 02:03:27 PM
Nothing against Dan but I'd much rather have Derek doing the morning show. He's soft spoken but funny as hell.

It does seem a little asinine to suspend the guy, but at the same time I could see how such comments if taken seriously could affect the value of the team and thus, the value of the Glazers. I don't know though. All the shady shiat they've been doing lately is sad. They could care less about this team right now. They've got a goldmine in soccer over in EU with Manchester.

/sad Bucs fan

Just because you are quoting someone else (from a personal conversation I would imagine) does not mean you are not defaming someone when saying it to a large audience.

If someone told me you like to touch children inappropriately and then I turned around and repeated it (from a source) on the radio to a larger audience...who is the liable one for the lie? The person who told me, or me? Both perhaps, except no one can prove my source actually told me that, right? I mean, it would be their word against mine.

Rome canned Travis? :O

Then again I shouldn't be surprised, since anything Rome says that he thinks is remotely humorous is repeated ad nauseam for fifteen minutes, not to mention he has a Ph.D in brown-nosing. Back in the day when I first started listening to him he wouldn't go anywhere near NASCAR. Then it started making money and suddenly he's having all the drivers on the show and gushing over them like a pit bunny.

/haven't listened in close to a year
//poor Travis

I'm fairly certain DS is correct about them losing money in the Madoff ponzi scheme. My understanding is that the big problem is that his comments eluded to the notion that the Glazers were also at fault.

Schrodinger's Casserole 2009-11-03 02:42:54 PM
I haven't listened to Rome in some time, but I really enjoyed the show when I did listen to it. Rome had a good balance of sports talk/goofing off. He did really good interviews and wasn't above owning a mistake or horrible prognostication. The NASCAR gobbling got tired though, it reeked of sell out.

Then again when the other option was Colin Cowherd, an endless loop of hail on a farm pond diarrhea sound effects would be preferable. Cowherd is the single worst radio "personality" I've ever heard, and that includes a litany of former BYU bench-jockies vomiting clueless, myopic, horse shiat on air.

Wow, no shiat? Damn, that's cold. I mean, this is the guy that got a "This Is Your Life" show for his 10 year or whatever.

While we are talking about huge radio douchebags I have to admit I use to hate Colin Cowherd until sportsnation came along.

iamskibibitz 2009-11-03 06:29:47 PM
Just look at the facts. The Bucs have massively cut costs the last couple of seasons and are now $30 million under the cap, which has lead to their being the worst team in the NFL (that very well may not win a game this season). And the Glazers recently sold Zapata Corp for $75 million. So they clearly are in a cash poor position. They owe nearly $100 million a year on debt service for Manchester United, so that could be the only cause of it. But they would have known that going into the ManU deal, so I very seriously doubt it. I would be shocked if the Glazers controlled the both the Bucs and ManU, say, three years from now.

chechcal 2009-11-03 07:55:08 PM
I don't know how anybody can listen to any sports talk radio. I listened to Rome when he first got his start in San Diego, but I was in high school at the time. Now any time I happen to catch him or anyone else I can feel my brain frantically searching for an "EJECT" mechanism.

That depends on a few things. First, is the person you're talking about a public figure? Second, do you have reason to doubt the truthfulness of the information you are repeating?

Marisyana: Rome canned Travis? :O

The guy he dedicated an entire show to for his 10th anniversary? Yep. He didn't even say anything about it on the air, just suddenly stopped mentioning Rodgers as a member of the XR4Ti crew. (That's not actually true, he did make a sarcastic 'Travis is headed off to "greener" pastures, heh heh' comment).

Schrodinger's Casserole: Cowherd is the single worst radio "personality" I've ever heard

The fact he engineered an attack on The Big Lead alone makes Cowherd a dick at best and a criminal at worst.

zunkus: I have to admit I use to hate Colin Cowherd until sportsnation came along.

Sports Nation is awesome. It is a show specifically designed to prevent any aspect of Cowherd's dickishness from seeping through.

He used to be on in Orlando (morning sports show); but after a while I decided I'd rather listen to the commercials of the other stations. I just recently discovered that he had moved on ... that provides me one more listening option on my drive to work.

I cried a little on the inside when the local sports radio stationed dumped Dan Patrick for Mike and Mike followed by Colin Cowherd.

That's not a fair trade. If I had paid anything, I'd want my money back.
