Buuuuuuut it was part of a Morman (I think) cult and not Islam, so I guess you've got that going for you.... which is nice.

Kudos for correct use of "Phase" instead of "Step". Most submitters get that wrong.

in accordance with Islamic tradition the film will not represent the Prophet himself or direct members of his family.

That sounds like the stupidest concept for a movie in history.

*looks at goofy "Goat Boy" publicity still from "Avatar" in the website sidebar*

...Hmmmm.

"On March 9, 1977, a group led by Hamaas Abdul Khaalis, seized several buildings and took 134 hostages in Washington, D.C.[2] The takeover led to the fatal shootings of a journalist and a police officer, and the non-fatal shooting of Marion Barry, who would become mayor of Washington, D.C. two years later. One of their demands was to prevent the release of the film. One of the hostage-takers specifically said, according to an on-site reporter, that "he wanted a guarantee from the whole world it will never be shown or they would execute some of the hostages".[3]"

So Hollywood has, in the last few years, released "Battlefield Earth", "Gigli", "The Hottie and the Nottie", "Good Luck Chuck", "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector", "Disaster Movie", "Date Movie", "Epic Movie", "Sex and the City: The Movie", and "Transformers 2", and THIS movie is the one most likely to have a theater full of viewers incinerated. That ain't right.

I dunno a bout a Muhammed film, but the epic film based on a Muslim I'd like to see would be based on Saladin.

I read a really good book about Saladin a couple of years back and heartily agree that he'd be a fascinating subject for a biopic.

An interesting bit of trivia; Moustapha Akkad, the guy who produced and directed The Message (and had spent the intervening years directing all of the Halloween movies), was in the process of putting together a big budget film about Saladin and the Crusades when he was killed in a hotel bombing in Jordan back in 2005.

Yes, yes. And the only way to make it authentic is to film it in Saudi Arabia.

Says who? Muslims? Who cares? Adhereing to religous rules sure hasn't stopped other films from depicting things that other religions find objectionable.

I hope this movie isn't about the Muhammed that worked with me at the Getty, because I don't know who would want to see that. I mean, he was cool and everything, but I wouldn't call his story "epic".

Well, maybe the part with me in it would be.

I've heard of a movie that was essentially about a major religious figure that never showed his face. I think it won 11 Oscars.

Depends on your sect what the specific prohibition is. Some interpret the ban so broadly that you can't depict anything living (thus the geometric design of the temples and lack of, say, still-life murals) and some think of it more in the same way christians think of the 'no idols' rule: you can still have crosses and whatnot so long as the symbolic uses are limited.

Also, this was already done. It was called "Dune".

Well, you're free to depict him in the same way I'm free to tell the big mean drunk at the bar that his haircut is gay. I can DO it, there just might be serious consequences.

That having been said, I'm so friggin' tired of people being afraid of these people. And by "these people," I mean Islamic extremists, as the majority of the one billion Muslims in this world are by and large no crazier than any other group of religious people. But the fact that television networks and movie studios and newspaper companies and book publishers are self-censoring is just disgusting. It stinks of cowardice. If you're too scared to offend people, don't get into the media. For god's sake, we have torture porn, we can't have a respectful, well done movie about the life of one of the world's most influential figures?
