I will admit to times in which I forget I am watching a recorded show and don't skip through the first commercial break. But this only happens on shows I'm used to watching live (read: The Daily Show and the Colbert Report), and only infrequently. What kind of idiots did they survey that just sit there with their Tivo watching a recorded show and not ever fast-forwarding?

It'd be like watching America's Got Talent all the way through and having to sit through an hour and a half for about 15 minutes of performances.

I occasionally do this. Though it's almost always when I'm watching something that I'm only partially paying attention to like a Married with Children or a late night talk show because I'm also on the computer hanging out on fark or something.

And then on occasion I'll go to the bathroom or get some food and just leave the commercials running instead of pressing pause.

but if it's something I'm paying full attention to, you bet your arse my finger is on that fast forward button ready to go.

kpottruff 2009-11-03 12:58:38 AM
If I am in the middle of making knuckle children I don't want to break my concentration. Getting to the Showcase Showdown 5 minutes early be damned!

GoHeels 2009-11-03 12:58:53 AM
Same here I rarely dont skip the commericals. Probably the only show not condusive to ff through the commericals is Fringe where with 60 and 90 sec breaks its easier to just let them play.

wejash [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 01:05:31 AM
Gee, I wonder if Farkers think they're a representative sampling of Americans and will extrapolate inappropriate statistical results from this bizarre piece of data.

Let's find out...

Rincewind53: What kind of idiots did they survey that just sit there with their Tivo watching a recorded show and not ever fast-forwarding?

I rarely fast forward for a variety of reasons:

1)Like the commercial
2)the remote is too far away
3)fapping
4)fapping to the commercial

syrynxx [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 01:06:19 AM
ReplayTV 5040 ftw. Auto-skips commercials.

My husband and I do this. It's also amazing how we both realize at the same time that we could be fast forwarding.

You must be mad. The show-to-ad minute ratio on Spike and TruTV is something like 1:45.

The worst is when you realize you cannot fast forward because it is live and you forgot to record it. I just turn the program off at that point because yes, I am that annoyed by commercials now.

frostus [TotalFark] 2009-11-03 02:50:21 AM
I have the opposite problem. I try to FF through commercials when I'm watching live TV.

Britney Spear's Speculum 2009-11-03 03:03:08 AM
They'll just put static ads at the top and bottom of the screens so even fast forwarding, you'll still see the ads.

Like those annoying tickers but they don't more.

I remember back in the day, when I would have to get my butt off the couch, walk over to the set, turn it off MANUALLY, then wait 3-4 minutes to turn it back on again, to skip the commercial.

30-sec skip Tivo remote hack. That is all you need.

yarnothuntin 2009-11-03 06:44:56 AM
Even when you fast forward you are watching the commercials. I can zip through and identify every spot in a standard 2 min break. Burger King... Chevy... Live Links... oh wait hold up, that chick is kinda hot...

Marshmallow Jones 2009-11-03 07:00:54 AM
Not surprising, considering most of the talk in my office the day after the Super Bowl is the farking retards talking about which was the best commercial.
People are farking stupid, end of story.

No Tivo, I don't watch enough TV to bother with one. Though I overhear a bunch when others watch.

Be-boop >> be-boop >> be-boop >> boop.

I'll even pause a show i'm watching live just so i can save up some commercial time to fast-forward through.

We tried this. It's amazing how fast you catch up with Live TV, even if you are watching a show or sports event that is 1 1/2 hour plus and you give it a 1/2 hour head start.

JustMatt 2009-11-03 08:28:43 AM
I DVR'd Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia last week only to find they shifted the start/end time by 7 minutes and the COX DVR we have only records on the half hour. I felt either COX or FX did this to discourage people from recording and fast forwarding though the commercials. Anybody else get this last week?

GavinTheAlmighty 2009-11-03 08:53:24 AM
Disadvantage to Rogers PVR: no 30 second skip. But otherwise, PVR has saved my life, my marriage, and the lives of countless Sudanese refugees on numerous occasions.

fo_sho! 2009-11-03 09:05:45 AM
For all you Comcast users (like me) here is a two minute hack that will bring you great pleasure:

Link (new window)

30 second skip button, with a 15 second skip back button means that commercial breaks are a thing of the past.

Enjoy!

duckpoopy 2009-11-03 09:44:47 AM
If you ever get a chance to participate in a survey be sure to say that you own a DVR and never skip commercials.

Maybe that is because the sponsors pay so much for those commercials and that this is the first time they are seen on air. Everybody knows that the commercials during the Super Bowl are worth watching.

Condemning the people of the country based on one day of activity seems rather shortsighted, don't you think? One might even call you stupid and/or retarded.

nicksteel 2009-11-03 10:11:04 AM
There is a very simple explanation - commercial time is when you get up and take care of business - getting food and/or drink, or getting rid of it.

I have both the Rogers PVR and a TiVo. I much prefer the TiVo; the only reason I keep the Rogers PVR is that I'm spoiled now, and need to be able to pause and FF on both main TV sets. I caught myself wanting to pause a movie last week, in the theatre.

Commercials are for chumps. Thank you, oh magical TiVo box.

I'm such a TV junkie that i would never clean house without commercials. You'd be surprised how much you can get done in several 3-minute breaks!

I forget a lot because I'm not thinking "Hey, I'm using my Tivo now." I'm thinking, "Hey, I'm watching [Show]." Usually my wife will say "clicky" to remind me that I can skip the commercials.

That show has been consistently doing that I have noticed. I would say it is off by atleast 2-3 minutes for me. On charter with a tivo.

icebergcomics 2009-11-03 10:48:43 AM
commercials are the best time for the kids to do homework and me to talk to my wife. we never fastforward, unless the wifey and I are making love, and we want to see who the murderer is before we finish.

bburgi: I'll even pause a show i'm watching live just so i can save up some commercial time to fast-forward through.

I virtually never watch live tv and if god were real I would thank him daily for my hd tivo with the dual tuner.

PROTIP: start football games ~ 45-60 minutes in and you'll get perfectly caught up to real-time by the end of the game.... but you can skip all the commercials and halftime bullshiat. And you can get those leaves raked up with the hour you saved.

All things considered I think I watch LESS tv after getting a tv, but I only watch what I want and when I went. The office takes 20 minutes. LOST takes 40. Football 2 hours instead of 3. And if I want to wait 2 months to watch a show I can. To sum up, if I didn't have Tivo I'd cancel the cable.

PS: the comcast dvr is pretty bad. It would be fine if they just fixed the FF, but it sucks so bad I don't know if they can.
