Science is not completely outside of the realm of human involvement. Human involvement means that human considerations are part of the process. Not shocked at all to see a large financial windfall for the person who has pioneered the whole movement.

"Former Vice President Al Gore thought he had spotted a winner last year when a small California firm sought financing for an energy-saving technology from the venture capital firm where Mr. Gore is a partner."

"Mr. Gore and his partners decided to back the company, and in gratitude Silver Spring retained him and John Doerr, another Kleiner Perkins partner, as unpaid corporate advisers.

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts. Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr. Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years."

I'm sure he had NO way of knowing that the Energy Department was going to offer such grants.

So if one puts ones money where ones farking mouth is its bad.. If one doesnt its also bad? Basically its bad because of?

As for "I'm sure he had NO way of knowing that the Energy Department was going to offer such grants." EVERYONE knows that governments all over the world are offering such grants to businesses in that space. Investing there has a good chance of yielding that kind of returns IF you are smart enough to pick a company that has good ideas and isnt all hot air. Not being retarded is not a conspiracy.

Seconded. I've actually made a lot of (on paper) money over this last year because I've been slowly investing in companies that manage green technology ventures, because seriously - unless someone figures out how to make petroleum from from ass-fat in the next decade, there is no safer long term bet than alt-energy.

Isn't it funny how when someone makes a killing on the military industrial complex or big oil, the right yells, "Hell Yes" but when someone makes money on new technologies, they scream "He's a fraud!".

"And, Congresswoman," he added, "if you believe that the reason I have been working on this issue for 30 years is because of greed, you don't know me."

No, because then you'd be a Republican. You are however Mr. Gore a liberal turd and I wish you would just go away.

I'm willing to believe, but give me a solid source. And, if there was actual malfeasance, explain how he wasn't bent over a table by an army of Republican lawyers. Seeing as how the GOP owned congress back in the Clinton days to the extent they hired on Ken Starr to waste tons of money crucifying Clinton for the same behavior that Gingrich was engaged in, I think they had the power.

All of you fools fail to see the real motivation behind this "green movement" hoopla Mr. Gore has taken on. Its so unreal because it is right in front of your face. He is hell bent on taking over the world after having metaphorical poop flung into his face via losing the 2000 election. The man will not stop until he controls you via the intarwebs he created. He will be putting "lock boxes" on women's vaginas so that man can no longer procreate and the human race will cease to be.

Only because most of these companies would fail tomorrow without government subsidies. No one biatches about Mr. Dell, or Gates, or Exxon, because they make something that is useful in and of itself. Something we have all sought out on our own to buy. The only way these wind farms and such are economically feasible is if you tax everyone and give the money to the manufacturer. I'd rather have non polluting and much cheaper nuclear energy, but you assholes won't let me.

While were talking, maybe you can explain something to me. For some reasons your unhappy when someone makes a ton of money off their own investment capital and an idea. But when someone else makes their money off an idea and investment capital raised by taxing me and everyone else and forcing us to buy their electricity (and charging us higher rate than we would pay for nuclear to boot) your just thrilled about it. Why the F*ck is that shiathead? What the hell is wrong with you?

I don't like it when politicians of any stripe get rich off of the same insider information they'd put anyone else in jail for.

I find it simultaneously amusing and sad when people defend the actions of a member of their party when they'd chastise a member of the other party for doing something similar.

The difference between the Nobel Prize in Economics and the Nobel Peace Prize is that you actually have to do something to win the Economics prize.

As in, actually publish something of note, rather than making a movie or being elected.

Thank you.

Now, I would first like to say that I have never voted for Mr. Gore.

Secondly, I would like to say that I am all for Nuclear energy. Hell, I'd not even care if they built one close to me. I do however have a problem with the fact that they cannot do anything except bury the spent fuel in underground caverns. You tell me this is "clean". I think not. If any of these energy companies go under, who will have the task of taking care of this problem? It will be your kids and grandkids sir.

Thirdly, I think that if we are not on the forefront of working on alternative enrgey, the we are going to be left behind and then who do we have to blame besides ourselves?

Oh, and by the way, I am a business owner who is soon to be free of the encumberment of working for myself because the last 8 frikkin years (most of which have been controlled by the Republican party) have not been conductive for a small business.

Once again, thanks for being respectful.

Have a good day

Everything "environmental" should be put on the back burner right now. We are facing a massive, global economic disaster. It is real and it can not be ignored/disputed.

It would be like an unemployed homeowner, facing foreclosure, fixated on his front lawn.

Health care, global warming, gay people, hate, terror, etc. are distractions.

Insider information is only insider if the information isnt already sitting around outside waiting for anyone to pay attention to it..

Out of curiosity, which lie are you referring to?

Everyone lies, especially when you've got as long of a political record as Gore. You must have a particular lie in your craw...or else you're naive.

Odds are the majority of your energy is made through burning coal. Also nuclear is cheap in the long term, extremely cost prohibitive in the short term.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epa/epat1p1.html

Also, I'm not 100% on this, but Gore probably isn't allowed to deposit taxpayer money in his bank account. I better go check though.

reclec: For some reason your unhappy when someone makes a ton of money off their own investment capital and a good idea.

Seems to be describing exactly what you're upset about. Everyone knew tax breaks were coming for alt energy start-ups. Its public knowledge, of course Gore had an advantage being a polit. He had his own capital from oil, and used it to invest in alternatives and carbon offsets. Big deal.
