149 year history, the richest two-mile handicap horse race in the world. One Tuesday afternoon every year that Australia and New Zealand stop working for 3 minutes. The Melbourne Cup, not just another horse race

I understand... I am from Indiana where for 80+ years we had a racetrack that was used once a year. Now we use it TWICE a year. WooHoo!

It's mayhem here.

I went out to the TAB (legal bookie) to get some tickets at 10.30 a.m.

It was already jointed. Had to line up for 15 min. to make my punt.

Now it's about an hour to race time.

Ales all around, for ALL my friends!

Hope you got a result festus. Bart let me down, Roman Emperor third last! My fault for taking advice from the mainstream media.

Here's a link to the full race if any farkers are interested. (new window)

Always a buzz to hear the crowd cheer as the horses go past the stands at the first pass, then a real thrill as they approach again for the finish.

I know people in this thread are speaking English, but I'll be damned if it's any English I know.

All of Australia shuts down for the day, as does some of NZ. The stock market is even closed. I guess they figure everyone will do enough betting for the day. Shocking victory I must say though.

Yo, Australia, I'm really happy for you, and Imma let you finish, but Saratoga has the best horse race of all time.

Subby, I don't get it. Why would you watch retarded horses run 2 miles?

Since it's Australia, I assume they circle the track backwards. And drunk.

Not a lot of people know this, but the losing horses are ground into a paste that is sold as a commercial product. Originally it was called "Ground Up Sweaty Horses in a Jar" but now it is known as "Marmite."

Might be the Race That Stops a Nation,

but it isn't the Race That Starts a FARK Thread...
