The English Major: I cannot stand Bob Marley's music.

I can't stand white guys 'inspired' by Marley that go out and get dreadlocks.

Just an opinion.

I thought his likeliness was on all sorts of merchandise already. Or was that Che Guevara?

Hilco CEO Jamie Salter believes Marley products could be a US$1 billion business in a few years.

Are there really that many college freshman in this country?

I love his music, but his family can go fark themselves.

Except for Ziggy, who does the theme for Arthur and Company.

I'm not sure it's a matter of preserving his image as much as it is about capitalizing on it. The fact that licensed Marley merchandise generates about $4 million in sales per year, while unlicensed merch generates about $600 million is likely what got this ball rolling.

GurneyHalleck [TotalFark] 2009-11-02 05:24:10 PM
What's it matter? His image is already being worn by people who don't even know what he's all about. Like most of the people who've already posted on this thread.

\ONE LOVE.

Ahhhh, low and behold one of our best selling papers! Out of the 3 or 4 Hemp paper options the Marleys are always chosen off of name alone, but at least they are a good quality paper. Our soft glass Marley water pipes,...not so much.

/But i'll take the 400% markup

I will never understand why Bob Marley is worshiped by so many white American frat boys. I mean, sure, he had some good songs, but it seems every frat boy I meet (I've lived in a couple of college towns, so I've met a lot) absolutely worships both Bob Marley and Dave Matthews.

We have a headshop in town that has buttloads of Bob Marley shwag. I never knew it was that big a deal till I went in there a while back.
/they sell music too

darkjezter: absolutely worships both Bob Marley and Dave Matthews.

because the other frat boys told them to. I suspect the guys that are seniors wear Bob Marley shirts, and so then the pledges want to fit in and go get outfits and try to fit in with the frat. And then the cycle keeps continuing.

Fook 2009-11-02 09:37:31 PM
Eh, like most musical Genres, the most recognizable artist is the one you could sell to the American masses. Marley was just 'white' enough to sell here, as well as having plenty of non-confrontational songs that went over better than his more revolutionary stuff. His former bandmate, oft-time collaborator and contemporary Peter Tosh was, however, very black(think Westly Snipes) and tended to have far fewer songs that weren't obviously political. Most people who aren't the type to dig into a genre know even less about many many great and influential reggae artists.

http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2009/04/22/125-bob-marley/

Since so many people are into Bob Marley, it is only natural for advanced white people to profess to only marginally liking Bob Marley (note: it is impossible for a white person to outright dislike him). Instead, these white people will claim to preferring more obscure artists like Burning Spear or Peter Tosh.

But be warned that a white person saying they like "reggae" what they really mean is "reggae from 1965-1983."
