They did this all the time on the original Iron Chef. I remember an abalone battle (listed as critically endangered since 2001) and one battle where someone used a threatened species of lobster just to infuse his rice. Used like $1000 worth & then just threw it away.

/Original Iron Chef is irresponsible but totally awesome.
//Did a cosplay spoof years ago: Klingon Iron Chef. "Today is a good day to fry!"
///Theme ingredient was quadrotriticale. But when Kaga unveiled it, the platter was full of tribbles.

Isn't this how the theory is supposed to work? If you only reproduce once in a lifetime of twenty years, then bad choice in method of survival for you and yours.

There once was a cook who made eel
To which earth-muffins did squeal
He cooked it with class
Said "Shove it up your ass,
I don't give a fark how you feel!"

If they were more edible they probably would be endangered.

I have to question the accuracy of this. I see eel in fish markets all the time. Is the eel actually critically threatened, or has it simply become very uncommon in a small geographic area?

Hmmmph... just look in the Romanian's hovercraft.

Did anyone else puzzle over the headline in TFA?

To paraphrase, it said "blah blah blah chefs were instructed to prepare a dish featuring an endangered species."

Now, after reading the article, I understand that what happened was that the chefs were instructed to use eel, which turned out to be endangered. But there's a broad difference between "Here, make a dish out of this eel." (which they probably didn't know was critically endangered) and "Hey, choose an endangered species and cook something out of it.", which was how I originally took the headline.

neofonz 2009-11-02 06:06:23 PM
Oops, meant the Hungarian's hovercraft

Whilst the eel is endangered in the wild, farmed eels are in plentiful supply, and much cheaper to get than any "wild-caught" one would be. While I understand the concerns of the conservationists, a more appropriate respose would be to stress the importance of obtaining your supplies from reputable farms.

If the eel becomes more popular in restaurants, farming of the species will increase, which also makes stock available for release into the wild.

There is more than one kind of eel. The article is about the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

This species of eel is critically endangered.
