Vince Young is moody and has not reached his true potential by any means, but everything I've ever heard about him makes him sound like just a really good person. So more power to him; helping to look after Steve McNair's kids is pretty damn classy.

/Also, I like your headline subby

He'd be top 10 even if the only game he ever played was that Rose Bowl.

Okay, that's a bit hyperbolic, but he was really farking good in college. If he's not top 10, he's top 15 for sure.

I dunno. That Tebow kid is a pretty good college QB

and it's hard for this Tiger fan to admit that!

FreakinB 2009-11-02 02:39:23 PM
He did fine. Obviously not great, but he didn't screw anything up. The Titans need to keep him in and see what they can get out of him. It's a lost season, and they have nothing to lose. Might as well see if a guy in whom you invested a top-5 pick is worth a damn.

Really, given the circumastances, I didn't understand why so many people were opposed to giving him another shot.

TheBigPythagoras 2009-11-02 02:41:24 PM
It wasn't pretty, and granted, it was against the Jags, but dammit he got the job done. It will probably do little to stop the hemorrhaging the Titans have experienced from last season to present, but this is a welcome band-aid.

A tip of the hat to you Mr. Young.

No love for Jonathan Crompton in the best college football QB of all time discussion?

(walterfootball.com)

Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee
Height: 6-4. Weight: 224.
Projected 40 Time: 4.95.
Projected Round (2010): FA.

7/24/08: Jonathan Crompton barely has any game experience, but now that Erik Ainge has moved on, it'll be his time to shine at Tennessee. Crompton was a highly recruited quarterback and he'll have solid weapons to work with, so I have no reason to think he'll fail.

2/4/09: Disregard everything I said. Jonathan Crompton is one of the worst quarterbacks I've ever seen on any level.

What did I say? Huh? What did I say. When the pressures off him, VY can play. Granted he didnt have to do anything crazy, but when asked to pass, he did it well. Great QB rating. I told you guys. Pressure kills this guy. But when the pressures off, he starts to show potential. And there not much pressure on an 0-6 team going no where.

His career statline at UT was:

Do you even remember 2005? He did lead the nation in passing efficiency in that year. Also, I thought that QBs were ultimately judged on the number of wins, and I will take 30-2 as a starter.

Lets compare,

Tommie - Record as starter: 33-3 (91.7%)
VY - Record as starter: 30-2 (93.8%)

I'll say VY gets the nod there.

Career passing
Tommie: 250-509 (49.1%), 4,003 yards, 47 TD, 18 INT
VY: 444-718 (61.8%) 6,040 yards 44 TD 28 INT

VY was far more accurate and threw for more yards, but Tommie threw less picks. Somewhat of a draw there.

Rushing
Tommie: 2,263 yards (5.9 ypc), 36 TD
VY: 3,127 yards (6.8 ypc), 37 TD

That ones in Vinces favor too.

Tommie's Senior stats (Heisman Trophy runner-up): 98-177 (55.4%), 1,467 yards, 18 TD, 6 INT, 113 carries, 803 yards (7.1 ypc), 16 TD

VY's Junior stats 2005 212-325 (65.2%) 3,036 yards, 26 TDs, 10 Int, 155 carries, 1,050 yards (6.8 ypc) 12 TD.

I'll take vince at his college prime over Tommie any day of the week./

Now let's look at Tebows career:

Passing: 532-813 (65.4%, 7,550 Yards, 75 TDs-15INTs
Rushing: 596 Atts, 2,503 yards, 4.2ypc 49TDs

Heisman Year: 66.9% completions, 3286 yards, 32TDs-6INTs, 895 rushing yards, 23 TDs

The only category Vince/Tommy have an advantage in is the yards per carry.

He did have an extra year than Frazier or VY but yeah, he is probably better than both of them, I was just arguing against the assertion that Frazier is the best option QB (Let alone overall QB) in college history.

SwayingMantits: Were they starters as Freshman? Tebow played, but didn't start until his 2007 Heisman Year.

Vince didn't really play much of the first half of 2003 and then shared time with Chance Mock. Tebow didn't start 2007 but he did get put in quite a bit, but he would have had 3 full seasons afterwards and Vince had 2. I don't remember Frazier as I'm too young.

Even taken into account Tebows got better #s than either.

IIRC, he had some medical condition that made his doctor tell him that if he kept playing after his senior year, he'd have to get his legs amputated or something.

Randall Cunningham was much, much better than Vince Young, and probably McNabb.

Your list is flawed because it attempts to straddle college and the NFL.

With the exception of Cunningham and possibly Vick, prototypical "black" quarterbacks (i.e. fast and athletic) have been a miserable failure in the NFL. Vince Young, Jamarcus, Akili, etc..
The black quarterbacks that have been successful have played white - Warren Moon, Williams, etc....

Vince, Jamarcus, Akili, and the rest were such great athletes that they could afford to be lazy in college. When they got to the pros and had to master an NFL playbook, they've not been able to handle it.
