(Cleveland Plain Dealer) Cleveland Browns owner says he isn't ready to fire head coach Eric Mangini, but he is ready to bring in somebody that will strip him of all powers
I feel kind of bad for the guy. I don't know much about him, but he seems like an owner that at the very least is smart enough to hire people he thinks will do good things and then lets them handle it without getting in the way. He also is taking responsibility for the mess and being open about it. I mean, Ryan is a great D.C., and Mangini isn't a Jim Zorn (although he sucks and is a douchebag) or anything.
I feel bad for Zorn. He was really given an impossible task. He was told to implement a west coast offense without being given any west coast offense players. Let's just take a quick look at what he was given.
QB: Jason Campbell throws good intermediate/deep routes. He is a good fit for a Gibbs/Coryell system. He has a slow release and a slow read progression. He is a terrible fit for a west coast offense.
RB: Clinton Portis is a tough between the tackles runner. He's great for a Gibbs/Coryell offense. He lacks open field elusiveness and has trouble catching passes out of the backfield. He is a terrible fit for the west coast offense.
WRs: Santana Moss/Antwaan Randle El are small burners great at running deep routes. Devin Thomas is also fast but lacks the discipline required to run precise routes. They are all terrible for a west coast offense.
Offensive line: There really isn't one so saying which scheme it better fits is a moot point. we blew our draft picks and free agency on defense even though we knew this was an area of need.
Tight End: You better believe this cloud has a silver lining!! Chris Cooley does actually fit the West Coast Offense.
Zorn was doomed to fail from the beginning. Most teams clear house and rebuild when switching schemes. Not the Redskins!! No we just say it and it happens!! We're a west coast offense. See how easy it was to switch. You could also argue that we didn't have the draft picks necessary to switch schemes and that would be a fair argument. The offense has to decide what it's going to be. Once that decision has been made there has to be an effort to rebuild it. I really believe that if Zorn had the proper personnel he could run an effective west coast offense. Unfortunately, he will never get that chance. He will just be the next scape goat sacrificed in order to hide the ineptness of the front office. Jim Zorn you have been Snyderratowned!! Collect your 200 dollars and pass go on your way out of town.
I've always found it a little strange that the Cleveland Browns haven't really had any success since they returned to the league, except for one cameo appearance in the playoffs. They seem to have well-funded ownership, and they certainly do have a devoted following. It's just never happened for them.

That is PRECISELY Lerner's problem. he doesn't know the game, thus all his hires are based on misguided perceptions and impressions. If he truly cares about the fans, he should sell the team.

I don't think he should sell his team if he's trying to do the right thing. I think he needs to hire someone to make the football decisions for him, like a Parcell's situation in Miami.

I fully admit he's apparently a good man, 'trying' to do the right thing... But you can't trust a man to make these types of decisions. Mangini sold himself to Lerner, because Lerner doesn't know any better. The league forced Crennel down Lerner's throat because Lerner didn't know any better. You are assuming that Lerner would be able to differentiate between a Parcells and a Kokinis... He can't.
Living in Cleveland and all joking about the guy aside, I have to say one good thing about Brady Quinn, even if it pains me to do so.
As far as I can tell the guy is taking the fact that hes being benched for no real apparent reason, playing for a team that hasn't scored more than what, 8 TDs all year(?), and is consistently bombarded, extremely well. Hes trying to be a team player and he isn't making this a 'me-first' situation like youd expect someone in his position to be in. I can dig that.

What did you expect him to do, act like TO? He was quiet when he was gifted the job because of the wishes of fans, too.
Yeah, but it's starting at the wrong level. Kokinis had only been there nine months or so, so what had he had time to screw up as much as Mangenius has?
