Reminds me of those videos where the person is apparently trying to back out of a store parking lot, and goes full speed through the the wall and into the cashier counter. I can't imagine how slow the thought processes must be to keep a person from going "Holy crap, I'm moving too fast!" and immediately slamming on the brakes.

has to be. one shelf coming down isn't going to collapse the racks on the other side. It's well done, though.

There's no WAY a forklift could generate enough speed to do that much damage. However a simultaneous controlled detonation can account for the precise nature of the collapse. All that alcohol would have washed away the evidence, the perfect crime....

I have gone ahead and created my own experiment to see if the "forklift" explanation holds up.

I used to work at Sams Club back in the 90s and I used to have to drive a forklift every farking day. Those pallet racks aren't very sturdy. The bottoms are only held in place by screws that aren't that big. Don't know what the guy did to reverse so fast but that sure was farked up.

Little_Dictator [TotalFark] 2009-11-02 02:29:56 PM
Also, who knows if the racks were overloaded (weight-wise) or not, or replaced on a regular basis. Over time, the metal can stress and start to bend. The only safe assumption I will make is that if that driver lived through this, he's out on the streets looking for a new job.

Rock_Strongo: how was everyone ok in that? i thoguht i'd just seen the first Fark snuff vid.

Forklifts have decent rollbars, and heavy sheet steel between them, on top, with holes for visibility. I have a forklift, and I assumed that the drivers survived the impact. There could be some injury from boxes coming in on an angle, from the side. My biggest thought/worry was fire, if there was indeed liquor in there.

I'm guessing that those racks were overloaded, to be that unstable. There might have also been some accumulated denting and damage to parts over time, which weakens them. They should have better guards/barriers protecting the bases of the uprights.

I used to work at Home Depot. They had much stronger shelving than this place, but they also stored much heavier materials too. I could see this happening.

You bend the end and it collapse taking the rest of the rack with it. The falling stuff hits the other aisle doing the same thing.

Tater1337 2009-11-02 04:50:35 PM

machine parts maybe, but booze does not weigh that much

The top product on one side caved in the supports on the other. I haven't driven a lift in years and the 'wrong pedal moment' made me wince.

Bunnyhat 2009-11-02 05:50:52 PM
That's why you don't keep crap all over the aisles like that.

He wouldn't have had to try backing up and turning at the same time if he was able to simply back up into the other isle and then move forward and turn.

This. Have hit the wrong pedal before and bumped into things.

Used to work in a warehouse with similar shelving and it does indeed crash down if hit hard by a 4-6k lb forklift. Specially when you have pallets up to half a ton or more sitting on each shelf.

Sure it will. When I was in high school I worked for MacMillian Publishing and watched a similar incident happen to racks filled with skids of textbooks.

So, what was that guy's biggest mistake in that video?

He was lazy.

He ought to have either chosen a different path or raised the load over the barrels. Also either he's the fastest unbuckler in the West or he wasn't wearing a seatbelt ...which arguably might have been a good thing in that instance.

They called it Vodka, and $150k.

Not sure if they mean "$150k in product rendered unsellable"
or "$150k of stuff on the floor".

The shelves came down like Dominoes !

If this is real then there is some incompetence far beyond a careless driver. You have to assume that the shelving will on occasion will take a hit. This is especially the case if you are put up expensive and/or very heavy items. Shelving is supposed to designed to take abuse. If someone was hurt then one could very likely have some lawyers, government inspectors, and insurance adjusters showed up in very short order. And none of them will be in a very charitable mood.

You two have no idea what you're talking about. Do you realize how much those forklifts weigh? It's simple physics. With all the weight bearing down vertically across those pallet racks, a forklift packs more than enough weight & momentum to buckle one leg. When one goes, they ALL go. Same principle goes for the racks on the other side -- the falling pallets from the first side hit them with even more force than the forklift, since they were falling from near ceiling-level. You just aren't comprehending the amount of weight & force that's involved here.
