I found that the military vets being close to the norm was surprising initially, and then I actually put some thought into it. Women love a man in uniform, and I certainly never had any problem meeting women that found it interesting. However, I knew countless guys in the Navy that were either dorks with a bad haircut or were ashamed of being in the Navy, thinking that chicks hate guys in the Navy. I looked at that this way... most hetero guys I know lost their virginity at the end of a spirited but clueless quest for pussy. We didn't know what to do with it, we just knew that we had to have it and we begged, pleaded, and traded down to get it. Imagine, however, replacing all that exuberance with complete insecurity about your sexuality and the ability to say "no" to your girlfriend that you only have because it seems to be what other people are doing. You are, as a teenager, less likely to have sex.
