Looking at the actual numbers... It isn't really a significant change... It's dropping at a pretty steady rate, and only a fraction is being gotten by Mac. All in all seemed yawn worthy

Vista market share dropped in September, from what I read not long ago. That means that not only did Vista never crack 20% usage share, but it dropped before Windows 7 was even released.

heh... yeah. Apple's problems are more about price point than anything. They are still consistently more expensive and until they're ready to compete with Windows based systems on cost, their market share will suck.

Given their current cash reserves and market cap, I don't think they give a rat's ass about significantly increasing market share.

T,FTFY.
As Hender said, I'm sure they are having too much fun rolling around in their piles of cash to be concerned about the problems of people who can't afford or simply aren't willing to pay their prices for their computers. They'll continue sitting pretty with the people who do buy their stuff.
i dont care one way about apple vs windows; but i'm sick to death of apple whores who cant shut the f*ck up about how great apple is. you're worse than linux proselytes. i use what i use because i know how to use it; if i want a computer to think for me, and i want to pay 4 times the "normal" price for the same f*cking hardware then i'll do so: in the mean time, stop trying to evangelize for Apple. seriously. stop. and leave me alone about it already, g-ddamnit.

Apple. No longer beleaguered. :p
I like Apple and I'd gladly use OSX over Windows 7 if they didn't restrict it to only their cookie cutter configurations. Doesn't bother me for their laptops, but the desktops are somewhat "meh"
For the same money I can build a much more powerful and better looking workstation, and choose any possible configuration of hardware I can think of. The Corsair 800D case is better looking, quieter and more functional than the Mac Pro and takes any possible configuration you can throw at it. I threw together a new system in that box in just about an hour. Plus a lot of the warranties on components far exceed anything Apple gives out. Longest I've ever waited on an RMA or replacement for any part was 5 days. And that was for a part that was 5 years old yet still under warranty. Living a few days on the laptop doesn't bother me in the slightest considering how rare it is for something to break down.
Add to that you have to take the whole unit in when something goes wrong. I can't just pick up a cheapo power supply at a big box store while the main one is getting RMA'd for a few days and keep on working, then return it. I have to stop everything and lose all access to the machine for a week. That's what keeps a lot of the people I know from switching.
I'm sure t3knosomething will come in and spout on about the programming advantages with a UNIX certified OS, etc. Fantastic. But in A/V I haven't had a single friend or colleague who sees any advantage to switching to Apple.

People still use desktop computers? :)
But seriously, when my desktop conked out earlier this year, I started using my MacBook full time as my main machine, and I haven't looked back. I actually purchased a MacBook Pro as my new primary machine (the MacBook was two years old and went to my fiancee), and I even ditched my 22" monitor because the 15" screen on my MBP was so much better.
And I should have added, my Windows desktop is what died. To replace it, I would have had to purchase a new CPU, RAM and mobo because my socket and RAM weren't supported anymore by AMD. I decided to just get a better laptop, instead.
Lando Lincoln:Hender: To replace it, I would have had to purchase a new CPU, RAM and mobo because my socket and RAM weren't supported anymore by AMD.
So...about 250 bucks then?
Thereabouts, yeah. But when I started using my MacBook as my main machine in the interim (I had just been using it when I traveled and whatnot) while I tried to get my desktop fixed, I found that I enjoyed OS X more on a daily basis than Windows XP, and I loathed Vista from my experiences using it as the base of my DVR. This was back in June or so, so waiting for Windows 7 wasn't an option.
Plus, I like having a laptop as my main machine better.

I really don't think Apple wants to take MS down. Apple has shown very little interest in dealing with say enterprise scale solutions, big businesses and all that stuff. They're built as a company that creates new products and prefers not to saddle itself with comptability requirements to keep customers happy. So it is kind of a moot point.
Now Android marketshare vs iPhone marketshare is going to be a worthy topic.

Aside from a slight exaggeration on hardware cost (from my best guess it runs 1.5x-2x typical cost) he's not stating (nor mistating) any facts here.
Well, now that you can buy 'just' the Mac OS and not the obscenely overpriced mac machines, I can see how it would have greater appeal on the market.
Then again, I wonder what the scaling back in the PC game area has done to remove the juvenile position of windows being the OS for the 'fun' stuff if all the fun stuff is going to be more and more console only?
If you're not going to play on the damned thing, what's the real gain of Mac vs Windows?
