[Wilson] said he had wanted to apologize for years and was moved to do so by comments he read from black civil rights leaders about President Obama's inauguration.

Good for you, sir.

Good for YOU

In-farking-deed.

There is almost nothing braver than admitting that you were terribly, terribly wrong in the past, and using that to become a better person.

Hats off.

Oh, and kudos to both of these men for their courage. It's hard to apologize for being wrong, and equally hard to accept the apology of someone who has wronged you.

Welcome to good old "'Conservitive' Christian" Logic... people can't change, redemption doesn't happen, if you're with those farking DEMOCRATS... oh if you're with them, you can rape, steal, murder on an epic scale, do anything that would normally get you the McManus Brothers down your throat, but ONLY if you do it and then consort with those "'Conservitive' Christians".

Sad, pathetic motherfarkers.

/Brave, Sir.

With any luck he has children and they still will be willing to look at him as an example and not a foolish old man. Fortunately some attitudes the young cherish do not age well, and that always gives me hope for the future.

And it's available to all people

I know it's a troll, but you do realize that white guilt is only a "negative" thing when a white person feels responsibility for past actions that they had no part in? Having white guilt when you are a white person who feels guilty for beating the shiat out of a black person is not a bad thing, and is in fact a perfectly reasonable and decent thing to do, you half-wit.

Wow, I never thought I would read something like this. One gets a bit cynical as one gets older.

It took a lot of courage to come and admit that you wronged someone and that your THINKING back then was wrong.

Kudos also for the man who forgave him. Being beaten up by a bunch of whitew racists can permenently skew your view of all people. Make you bitter. Make a stone of your heart.

I feel better today for this news.

Now all he needs to do is turn himself in to the police for assault and face a jury of his peers.

The Statute of limitations. I assume that this is well beyond it.

FTFY. Guilt can be a useful motivator to do the right thing, from an ethical standpoint.

Arthur Jumbles: Now all he needs to do is turn himself in to the police for assault and face a jury of his peers.

I believe the statue of limitations for assault in South Carolina is 3 years - it was less than that in 1961. I wouldn't worry about a "surprise arrest."

Zombie Hitler: "I said if just one person comes forward and gets the hate out of their heart, it's all worth it," Wilson told the AP. "But I hope there will be a bunch of people. Life's short and we all go to the same place when we die."

Psh. Typical politician. It's never enough.

Except that this quote is from the former Klansman.

It sucks that liberals never have to apologize to conservatives 40 years later. That's because they are usually on the right side of history.

How about a little balance? C'mon conservatives. Get on the right side for once.

At the time, nobody was against it. If on the other hand you would like to talk about the dark and sordid past of liberals in the 20s and 30s we most certainly can.

Good for these two...

My grandpa was extremely racist up until his 60s, and had a hell of a temper when he was younger (he got drunk and tried to shoot my grandma at one point, and ended up having the bullet go through the wall and hit my mom's bed a few inches from her head). He mellowed in his old age, became a calm and peaceful man, and learned to accept people for who they were.

One of the last conversations I remember having with him was during the primaries. He asked "So, who is that ni**er that's running?" We told him Obama... And he replied "Yeah, that's who I'm voting for."

He overcame his prejudice. Sadly, he passed away soon after that, and wasn't able to see Obama take office... But I'm proud of him for working past those stereotypes he grew up with.

I know, I know, "cool story bro" and all that. It just makes me feel for these people even more. I've seen the transformation from a bigot to an unprejudiced person up close, and it's an amazing thing to see.

/something in my eye
