Enough's enough. If people want to give seniors free public transportation, then start a charity and buy them passes. But making public transportation systems unable to at least recover their own costs is the chief explanation why public transportation is a mess. If the true cost were revealed you'd see less sprawl for one.

Actually if the CTA hadn't been stiffed by the state for years and years, this wouldn't even be an issue. But they're pretty far in the hole as far as capital expenses, which just farks up everything else.

You can read about all the latest developments in public transportation, like how the legislature is working on rescinding free rides for seniors or how Apple is adopting a decrepit El station or how an extremely stinky man fouled the air on the red line.

Why charge at all? A lot of the fare money is lost to the cost of printing and selling passes and handling piles of pocket change, and bus fares only pay for a modest portion of the cost of providing bus transit anyway. Eliminating fares increases ridership, which means less congestion and less pollution. No fares means shorter stops and less disruption to traffic. Great deal, right? Even for taxpayers like me who never ride the bus.

Unfortunately, giving anything away free is immoral, even if those who give do so out of selfish purposes, because giving is communism and communism destroys our freedom.

But maybe we could compromise and make little old ladies show their government ID before getting on the bus. That would make it less like communism, right?

Nah, I think communism has a great streak of "papers, please"..

Capitalism would be saying thank you for riding, then grabbing the old ladies by the ankles (keep reading), lifting them up, and shaking for any loose change.

People in Chicago, seeking to keep the CTA from raising fares for something like the 3rd time in three years, are trying to get the free ride revoked for senior citizens!

As for anyone's "concern" about "undocumented" seniors, the CTA operates on automatic fair cards and seniors have to provide proof of age to get their free ride, and they are required to show a senior citizen ID card when they board a bus or train.

While I think that it is a noble idea to offer free rides for senior citizens, I think that the CTA is so seriously mismanaged and in such dire need of money that this is not the time for this program.

Anything that keeps undocumented old people from driving is cool with me.

The problem is that seniors who are poor enough to need this already qualify for reduced fares. You could make it free for those people, but many, many, many riders over the age of 65 can more than afford to cough up the cash. There is no sense in giving them free rides.

The CTA didn't start the program. Blago forced it on the CTA without providing any extra funding.

Just to correct the headline, the City of Chicago wasn't the one who came up with this boneheaded idea; it was impeached and removed from office former governor Blagojevich, making this a stupid state idea that applies to all of the Regional Transportation Authority (which includes the CTA, Metra and Pace systems).
