If that doesn't happen in ten years, they should take his Nobel Prize away.

Good headline. I hate climate change too, because it's a liberal wet dream that unfettered capitalism might lead to unfettered pollution which might lead to something bad.

Good capitalists know that this is a crock of bullsh*t.

Sadly, I'm going to have to dismiss this particular submission. As much as I love pollution and hate liberals, I can't get past this part:

According to Arab Internet services company Maktoob.com

Sorry Arabs, you'll have to eat a dick on this one. Cal Thomas, Sean Hannity, and Neil Cavuto give me plenty of AMERICAN logic on why climate change is a load of crap. The last thing we need is Muslim influence on this debate. Stick it where the crescent moon don't shine, arabs.

According to him the ice caps are 40% gone and sea levels have risen what, an inch?
...That's some bad math right there.

With even the crackpottiest of scientists saying the worst case scenario will max out at less than half to a quarter of Gores prediction, I suspect this is a number pulled out of someones anus for dramatic effect.

When you can vote for an idiot or vote for the guy that said:"Give me your money or WATERWORLD!" ...It explains how Bush won two elections.

Note to Mr. However-Many-Thousands-Per-Speaking-Engagement: The Arctic ice could disappear and it wouldn't raise sea levels.

Some people may not have read the article which described the event as part of "International Day of Climate Change". In other words, he was speaking at a meeting of Gore disciples. You know, sort of like Jim Jones speaking in front of a bunch of people with plastic cups filled with grape Kool-Aid.

Such a pity that the chicken littles have such a pompous ass as a figure head. His home state didn't even vote for him as president but you all just lap...him...up.

The ocean will never be truly dead, life will survive, adapt and eventually recover. It's just a matter of whether we will be around to see it happen. We are destroying our environment, and we will pay for it. However, do I accomplish anything by making claims like "all life on our planet will DIE from our pollution within 2 days, if we don't stop eating Twinkies NOW!!!!!!"

As for Gore, I just think that wild fear-mongering statements do more harm than good. And it makes me question, are the people who make these wild statements really believe what they're saying? Or are these people simply attention whores?

more than the world population? And we all live between 0-200 ft above sea level?

this article doesnt make sense.

if the ice cap completely melted, it in fact would doo... nothing, because it is ice in the ocean so its already accounted for in terms of sea level. al gore no matter how much of a douchebag should know this. anyways a rise so high is stupid anyways, no one is predicting that

its hard to believe he actually said that, either he misspoke, its a misquote, a severe brain fart. or hes just that dumb

would be different if Greenland melted tho...

As far as I can tell from Google News, only "Maktoob Business" is carrying this story, plus a couple blogs that cite Maktoob Business as their only source. It looks like a business news outlet based out of the UAE, and owned by Jordanians.

No scientist is talking about a 70-meter sea rise. One of your four cases (or a deliberate hit job) sounds right to me.

It seems so preposterous I'm assuming it's made up.
67 meters in 10 years is far,far outside the range of any other prediction I've seen, and 40% * 67 would be 27 already.

I'll bet this is another bit of nonsense cooked up to sucker the reflexively gullible element among the Gore haters.

1. He didn't say it. The article is made up. Pulled in the usual Gore-obsessed crowd, tho!

2. North isn't the only direction, dumbass. There's a lot more ice down below and it's not floating on anything.

tomasso [TotalFark] 2009-10-31 07:58:44 AM
Gore could not have made these claims. No matter your opinion of him, you can't argue that he is of sub-normal intelligence, and those claims are so foolish that a small child could see through them.

67 meters times a hundred million refugees per meter is almost exactly equal to the entire population of the planet. The math seems to have been created specifically to make that equation balance.

Nobody, not even the most wide-eyed radical, thinks that the entire earth will become the set for a Costner movie within a decade.

Although, to be honest, I did just check to make sure that my air tanks are full and my spear gun is properly oiled.

there's a lot of that ice above sea level. sitting on top of a continent.

but the ocean's rising level isn't that big worry. it's the level of Oxygen producing microorganisms that is falling fast because the temp is increasing. this is producing higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere because those tiny things are Spaceship Earth's CO2 scrubbers.

then there's the decreasing salinity that is expected to cause huge current changes. but that's another worry.

SwiftFox [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-10-31 08:16:10 AM
FTA: More importantly, even should the highly alarmist Met's highly unlikely 50 to 70 year predictions come true, melting sea ice has little or no effect on SLR as it displaces an approximately equal weight of sea water in either physical state.

Ha! Caught them in a error! It displaces exactly an equal weight in either physical state!

Unsung_Hero 2009-10-31 08:23:29 AM
So, according to the article it's likely mainly due to translation error by the reporter, but he'll take some time to get his complaints in before the need for a retraction becomes apparent.

""The North Pole ice cap is 40 percent gone already and could be completely and totally gone in the winter months in the next 5 to 10 years.""

Based off the 40%, I'd say ocean levels are roughly 100ft higher than they were when the ice caps were 100% intact.

Right?

/apparently they forgot ice still displaces water...or something...
