I asked my mum and she told me I had been made redundant.

By the department of redundancy department? Blimey!

What will we do when robots make us all redundant? I for one will be in my quarters ordering tea, Earl Grey, hot.

I can't be the only one who has a hard time taking the word "mum" seriously.

His hamster is named splodge? Is that the British spelling of splooge? Do you think his mother knows?

FTFA: It outlined a redundancy package of "one week's pay in lieu of notice, which equates to £6.93 (subject to tax and NI)".

NI!

Good, good. Get him use to this early so it's not so hard to swallow later in life.

/Can't start them too young I always say.

Unsung_Hero 2009-10-31 06:33:06 AM
Given his age, the income level, etc... well, around here they'd just cut you off if you were an adult in a permanent position for less than six months.

Getting a week's pay after two months? That's pretty sweet.

Also, a good life lesson for the kid that won't hurt as much as if it were to happen when he's older and has family to support.

``And the Union workhouses?' demanded Scrooge. ``Are they still in operation?'

``They are. Still,' returned the gentleman, `` I wish I could say they were not.'

``The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?' said Scrooge.

``Both very busy, sir.'

``Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,' said Scrooge. ``I'm very glad to hear it.'

What sort of country is it where people say NI to young paperboys?

England is a surreal country to me sometimes. When I had a paper route, you didn't get benefits, a wage, or vacation time. You just got to keep part of the money you collected. And if you didn't collect enough for some reason, you had to pay out of your own pocket. On the other hand if your route included bars, you were on easy street.
Get paid to basically not deliver the papers? Weird.

I've always loved that term, "redundancy." I thought it was demeaning to say a person was "let go" or "downsized." "Made redundant" is just a punch in the face.

Yes, I am asking Fark for advise on how a 13 y/o can make money, any ideas (not me, my son).

That's a great card! I used to live about 4 doors down from that place in Seattle (Phinney Ridge for Seattle farkers who don't know). Those shrubbery faces have been there for years. And now they have been immortalized. Sweet!

No, that would be splououge.

This young lad's disappointment is written in the stars. Nobody named Kane will ever amount to anything other than an arch villain who's brain is unavoidably implanted in a cybernetic killing machine destined to menace Detroit. His parents should have known this.

I think that the factory did it because they saw him as a legitimate employee instead of a 13-year-old scrub. Rather than have him come to a job and find out 'you're not needed today' they gave him an official letter and proof that he was worth what they paid him, and then some.

/Remembers when my uncle shut his cabinetshop down (which my father bought) and the sweeper came in on a Saturday during a family function - he was very polite and asked where my uncle, Bruce, was. When he saw the kid walk up, he told him that he wouldn't need him anymore and said 'Due to circumstances beyond my bank account I have to fire you, but, you did a better job than anyone else in your position since I opened.'

He gave the kid $100 he couldn't afford and invited him to eat dinner with us.

That kid is now the head of the IT department for Bresnan in Billings, MT.

Weirder is that his boss is one of my best friends who went to... wait for it... Notre Dame for a Computer Science degree so he would never have to leave Billings again.

He is sort of already is experiencing that though if you think about it. He was working to get a cage and buy treats for his hamster. Now he and his hamster will have no more treats and if they foreclose on the cage, no home. Okay, the last sentence was dumb but at least he tried to be responsible for his hamster.

The redundancy payment is weird, but I got a wage as a paper boy. I worked for a newsagents who got subscriptions paid to them monthly or weekly by whoever wanted a paper and I got paid £13.50 a week to deliver them, plus Chistmas tips (which added up, I delivered to a pretty nice neighbourhood).

The newspaper I delivered as a kid went out of business. I found out when the truck didn't show up with my bundle.
