Why shouldn't the Fed have retreats? It's not like their in any trouble, right?

Geez, aren't the right-wingers always saying government should be run like a business?

Oh, I get it...this is one of those "do as I say, not as I do" double standards.

I remember executives being admonished by democrats for trips to Las Vegas, I believe it was, just a few months ago.

So I guess this is one of those "do as I say, not as I do" double standards. Oh wait, we're in "recovery" now so maybe it's okay.

Whatever. I didn't know having a "D" next to a politician's name equated to an automatic halo. There are plenty of democrats who qualify as pompous, self-righteous blowhards just as well as republicans.

Truncks1 2009-10-30 04:14:02 AM
FTFA: "Earlier this month, the San Francisco Fed held a conference on Asia at the Bacara Resort & Spa near Santa Barbara, a resort where rooms can range from $250-$400 and suites from $800 to $2,000. "

Do people think those execs who flew in on private jets are staying somewhere thats only "$250-$400 [for a room] and suites from $800 to $2,000"?

I hope you don't engage in recreational flying. Or ride in motor vehicles. Or have any particularly sharp objects in your house that you could trip and repeatedly fall on.

I think you mean drive a motor vehicle. But yeah I do a lot of recreational flying...on your mom! (snap dog! snap!)

Nah, Ted Kennedy is dead and John McCain is in politics now, cars and planes are safe again.

Next thing you know, executives and government run financial institutions will be getting huge bonuses.

Or own a swimming pool. Just in case you have a "heart attack" near it

$300/night is hardly an expensive luxury retreat.

Ozarkhawk 2009-10-30 07:12:05 AM
I am certainly not defending the fed, but this type of reporting really aggravates me, and it has been happening more and more lately.

At the top of the story, which everyone will read: a resort where rooms can range from $250-$400 and suites from $800 to $2,000.....
an inn where regular rooms go for about $320 a night and suites up to $1,860 a night.

Buried near the bottom of page 1: The event's attendees were given a discounted rate of $300 a night - they had to pay for the cost of conference fees and their rooms.

Typical media. Sensationalize first, tell the actual story later.

ChubbyTiger 2009-10-30 07:28:10 AM
FTFA: A source familiar with the Kansas City Fed conference noted that the organizers make sure to recover all of the costs of the event with attendees paying their own way.

Um, what's the issue again? Oh, bad reporting. This was a case study for stupid reporters, right?

ghare 2009-10-30 07:42:34 AM
Yes, of COURSE bad reporting. Also, the companies America had to BAIL OUT. The Fed did the bailing. I see a small difference there.

Ha! Same shiat happens all over the world. In this country, the labor laws are pretty harsh on employers that deny workers a "steady" contract and opt for other, less secure forms of employment for the worker. The biggest offender in this matter? The government! Surprise... not!

I think it's great. But don't tell me that you don't think the folks at Citi or BoA should be getting pay cuts at the behest of the "pay czar" while ignoring the fact that the government is doing the same thing.

All bank and/or federal government conferences from now on should be mandated to be held in either downtown Detroit, Buffalo or Atlanta or next to their airports.

Oh, and the reason most people are upset with the bailed out companies taking expensive executive retreats isn't misplaced class-related hostility. It's that they're on the government teat, and should be spending taxpayer dollars more wisely.

As soon as the Fed needs bailing out, then I'll be angry.

Also, the Fed is not a government-run agency. It's a private bank with a Congressionally-granted monopoly over national monetary banking policy.

Yeah, God forbid he realign their comp to be more in line with prevailing market conditions. We get it: You're angry. Now, can you show me either where these conferences are in contrast to others the SF or Boston Fed have hosted over the years, or that they cost their respective organizations a dime?

Not much of a need to use TARP money when you own the printing press.

I dunno, is the federal reserve begging acting like an alkie hobo who keeps spending his food money on alcohol and then goes out on the street begging for more?
If so then I guess I'm a little upset, if not, well then I think the corporations should shut up.

TDBoedy 2009-10-30 01:57:26 PM
So they are getting a good discount...and members are paying for themselves.

I see nothing wrong here.
