Why would music fans listen to anything by U2?

Either this is the trolliest headline ever, or it's just making fun of anyone who watches whole concerts on YouTube and FB

I watched the Foo Fighters on Austin City Limits a few weeks ago and it looked like a good show.

/I find it interesting that bands I like are on PBS. I hope that means that they're getting cooler, and not that I'm getting lamer.

Foo Fighters is one of those bands that I respect but don't particularly like. To me their music is better than pop-drivel, but is still just bland rock and roll.

But I think Dave Grohl's attitude and his side projects are cool. QOTSA, Probot, Tenacious D, playing with Paul McCartney, having Geddy and Alex join FF on stage to play YYZ, inducting Queen into the R&R Hall of Fame and jamming with them...he seems like a guy who is just out there doing what he loves and having the time of his life.

I just find his music bland.

Foo Fighters is better than most of the current "bands" on the radio today. I don't think they're great, but they aren't bad, and a couple of their songs are really good. If I wasn't already going to watch a great college hockey rivalry on Saturday, I'd watch this.

Not a big fan of U2, but this (new window) is, well, awesome. They also performed it at the first Saints pregame show in the Dome after Katrina.

Kidding... Dave Grohl is pretty cool, not a huge Foo Fighters fan but I like what he does.

I think their first two records were pretty good, not great, but certainly more entertaining than I expected. As mentioned above, "Everlong" is a gorgeous song, and might be their peak. They've been getting blander ever since then, however.

Also, they do seem to have a lot of fun making videos, which is kind of cute.

Well, it's been several years, but I was thinking Bjork headlined that day. I'd still rather see Oasis than the Foos, but I have a soft spot for bands with singers that can sing.

Grohl's an amazing musician. Everybody thought Cobain was the talent in Nirvana, especially with Dave in the back just playing drums. He's a very talented multi-instrumentalist and writes some good pop-rock.

Comparing that guy to U2 (with a guitar player who developed his distinctive sound because he sucked at playing guitar) is laughable.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Their more recent records aren't as great, but as long as Dave can write songs like Stanger Things Have Happened, they'll be fine.

You're right, but not for the reasons you think.

Compare the catalogs. Regardless of taste, one is bigger, better, and has more longevity than the other.

bigmattress: Compare the catalogs. Regardless of taste, one is bigger, better, and has more longevity than the other.

We have no idea what Grohl's longevity will be compared to U2's. They do have a 15-year head start, after all.

But at the moment he appears on the road to one day being considered one of rock's elder statesmen. He's already been in two of the biggest bands of the modern rock era. Twelve years of Foo records, big sales straight down the list, lots of side projects and collaborations, and the respect and admiration of his peers. He's going to be around for a long, long while.

It's swell that U2 is huge and all, but that doesn't even remotely minimize Grohl and his work.

I still find it very odd that although I'm a fan of the Dave and fully respect him, I've never ever purchased (or downloaded or copied) any of his music.

Did catch FF on Austin City Limits and that sure looked like a great show.

No doubt I would love to play drums, or bass, or guitar, or even keys for him, but I just don't like FF enough to go out an buy it. I find that very strange.

There is no doubt that it's better than anything else on the radio, there is no doubt that it's a hell of a show, there's no doubt that he's a talented man... I just can't pinpoint the problem.

/its lacks ZAZZ

I agree with the posters above, Grohl seems like a really great guy as far as celebrities go. The "problem" is that his music is just generic mainstream rock. It's really sad, considering how open mainstream is today. He could do anything from Radiohead to Kings of Leon to AFI, even re-invent "mainstream punk," whatever that might mean-and still sell just as many albums. The first Foos album was promising, but the promises were broken.

Foo Fighers pays the bills; all the other side projects (listed up thread) are where he experiments.

/And I don't really think AFI is all that great.
