Seems like the safest place to have an accident to me.

I avoid fire trucks. One of them is bound to actually be a giant robot, who will pick up & throw my little Honda like a whiffle ball.

Emergency equipment = flashing lights, in this case. They're activated in order to draw attention to the fact that they're in the middle of the street, performing a dangerous maneuver, and you should stay back.

Because fire trucks are big. They also don't have back windows. Backing up carries with it some risk that going forward doesn't have. Most departments have a pretty solid rule that states the emergency lights are on if the truck is in reverse. It may help people in that massive blind spot notice the truck. In this case, the idea is to help drivers notice the big heavy thing that's across two lanes of traffic.
