I know some people that still use AOL.

You mean there was content among the broken links, horrific code, and ads?

Shrapnel [TotalFark] 2009-10-26 10:26:59 PM
It's cool, I heard about this thing called MySpace that lets anybody, I mean ANYBODY, put up their own website, for FREE! I hope it has some easy ways to customize the look, though, because I've seen some web graphics that SPARKLE, and I totally want to use them.

I'll say it once (in the redlit version) and I'll say it again:

But who will host the lunatic fringe and 1994-era family photo sites with blinking text then? angelfire?

//haven't used geocities since the mid-90s. Haven't trusted a site on it..well, ever.

If you listen really hard, you can hear a MIDI version of "Taps" being played in the distance.

I really enjoyed xkcd's tribute to GeoCities today. And by "enjoyed" I mean "It burns! Make it stop!" I forgot that the Web really looked like that.

Why is this sad? This is like having a benign tumor taken off. I wasn't really worried, but damn it's nice without it.

Angelfire deleted my files without telling me, shot my dog, and raped my sister.

My mom told me this weekend that she's finally going to get broadband but she's going to keep AOL for a while because "she likes it".

And the rest of the internet will be closing down in mid-November. It had a good run but it just didn't catch on. Remember to save your last few lolcats.

dv-ous 2009-10-26 10:35:57 PM
I've been using a Geocities account as a "thumb drive" for about 13 years now. Started paying the $5/month for FTP access not long after they made that a paid feature.

(If you were as absentminded about losing thumb drives as I am, you'd know what a good deal that is.)

Oh, snap.

Really hit the nostalgia sectors hard, this. I can vividly remember programming my first webpage at the tender age of 14 and throwing it up on GeoCities.

Just.... damn. A farking decade! You've got to be kidding me.

I had 'The Losers' Place in Space on GC. Over a million hits before it went down.
Sad, it was my first site, horribly done, and completely lacking in content.
Pretty much like ever other page on it.
;)
RIP

Seriously? Same here actually. I registered one of their directory sites (in/sited) about 12-13 years ago. Then, one day a couple of years ago, I got an email saying they had deleted the page and its contents because it may infringe on one of their promotions. It turns out they were going to use InSited or something similar for their newest campaign.

A week later, I got a letter of apology saying they had re-instated the site and were sorry for deleting my site. Amusingly enough, that campaign disappeared promptly.

//yeah, yeah. "riveting tale, chap" territory..

Back in the days before Picasa, i used Geocities to host photos of my (then) new baby. If more than 2 family members viewed them, my bandwidth would be out for the rest of the week

"It's humorous somewhat to go back and look at it -- it's so simple compared to what Web sites are now," she said. "It almost seems innocent."

Who says that? With the whole "I showed them my U2 website and got the job" story...sounds totally made up. And stupid.
