The experience ruined his hobby for him. He's an ex-tractor fan.

(You have no idea how long I've been waiting to use that pun.)

I understand the guys anger at the meth head. Having your tractor stolen and damaged could really be a problem for a farmer. But what idiot leaves the keys in a $90,000 piece of equipment that your livelihood depends on?

All of them. When you have multiple tractors and a lot of hired hands and/or family members running them and you're constantly moving them around, or working with them, the notion of taking the key out is just crazy. Besides, out in the country, folks are supposed to be trustworthy. Mr. Repentant Tractor Enthusiast is lucky. Most farm types don't necessarily trust the constabulary or judiciary to properly impress upon miscreants the gravity of their offense and so make that impression themselves. The 3 S's of justice: Shoot, Shovel, Shut up.

It isn't just farm equipment all those bulldozers, backhoes and graders you see on construction sites usually have the keys in the ignition or a cubby hole on the floor by the seat. Good thing for me, I never could figure out how to get them in gear as a curious pre-teen.

Hee hee hee.

I remember seeing this on the news when it first happened - even more surreal was that they chose to interview a light plane pilot who was chasing both the addict and the cops.
