City Council meetings can be a great source of entertainment. I enjoy going to ours when they're discussing high rises or expanding of the city limits.

Deputies didn't jump on that one too quick, did they?

Oh and the highlight of this little adventure is how the guy in the yellow shirt attacks the guy in the red first, and the one in the red ends up with the jackboot on his face while nothing happens to the guy in the yellow

I might be wrong, but I am just guessing the guy in the yellow shirt is the brother of one of the city councilmen, as referenced in the article.

If you see an angry old guy, go the other direction. They're mean as hell.

Of course it doesn't.

It's just that I am cynical enough to have that as my first thought as to how it went

I agree that the dude in yellow started it, but it looked like the redshirt quickly became the dominant and tenacious combatant. Either way, they both went to jail, according to TFA.

Aulus [TotalFark] 2009-10-16 05:08:00 AM
yup, but the cops seem to have been just a wee bit more aggressive with the other guy.

GungFu 2009-10-16 05:08:45 AM
What kind of move is it when you (old guy in yellow) go up to someone and you put your left hand on the back of the neck?

I thought it was going to be a lemon party for a sec, especially when they fell down.

Well they managed to grab him first, and damned if they weren't going to throw someone to the floor and break their shoulder while screaming "STOP RESISTING!" into their ear.

That is, generally speaking, how the world of politics - and the world - works. Not being snarky, cause it upsets me. But that's generally how things are in life.

I had a disagreement with the brother of a city council person once. 3 days later someone from Parks and Rec came by and told me that someone complained about my dewberry bushes and they'd I'd have to clean them up. I asked for the name of the person or a copy of the complaint, he shrugged and said "you must have pissed off Tommy". Never heard anything else.

I'm a St Pete resident and I'm pretty sure that would be the redshirt. This whole controversy is ridiculous. A decade or so ago, some geniuses thought it would be a great idea to open an upscale open-air mall in homeless- and crack-ridden downtown St. Petersburg.

It hasn't worked out so well. And like any downtown, it attracts protestors.

Instead of realizing they are in a really bad spot for an upscale open mall, they now blame these protestors (mostly anti-Bush, anti-Iraq War over the past decade) for ruining their business. (And all those liberal Obama crackheads too, but not out loud).

So they've made the sidewalk private now.

Let's all see how well that works to save it.

I love the Muvico there though. You don't actually have to buy tickets there in the afternoons if you act like you have one. They're so poorly staffed no one ever notices. And they have a pretty decent Imax.

...controversial vote about privatizing a strip of sidewalk in front of downtown's Baywalk.

I think I might know what that means. It's when a hipster dufus cafe (or restaurant, hamburger stand etc) gets city permission to block sidewalks with tables and chairs, attracting all manner of people with their dogs, baby carriages, shopping carts and other detritus of their lives. And when it gets cold, they put out those big tall outdoor heaters, further blocking the sidewalks.

I would gladly get into a fight argument to prevent passage of an ordinance of this type. I hate it when I'm forced to walk in the street to get around sidewalk cafes, or worse, having to weave in and out of tables trying not to step on some dog's tail or knocking over a scalding latte into a baby carriage.

It seems like these kind of places are multiplying like wire coat hangers in a dark closet. I have nothing against a business trying to attract custom, but blocking sidewalks is not the way to do it. I don't see many of them spending the money to widen the sidewalks.

I really don't enjoy eating/drinking when I'm practically sitting in the street, inhaling bus fumes, being pelted with grit blow up by the wind and being harassed by bums looking for handouts. But my friends who still smoke love outdoor sidewalk places.

If they had proper zoning this wouldn't fly. We have some sidewalk places here but they have sidewalks out front that are wide enough to provide 4' (maybe 6') of sidewalk in addition to the part that's blocked off by the restaurant.

Almost all city council meetings I've ever been to have some kind of entertainment. You'd probably be surprised how many crazy people show up to these kinds of things. I've never seen a fight though.

Yeah, but if St. Pete outlawed teenage hoods, most of the southside would be in jail. Half of them are anyway.

St. Pete, by the way, is a hilarious city, which is why I love to live here.

All the white people freaked out in the '60s and abandoned all the best and most beautiful parts of the city so they could go live in Largo.

Haha. That's funny.

I misread the article and thought it said "privatizing a strip club."

And I thought: wow, the city owns a strip club in St. Petersburg?

Yellow shirt guy needed to be charged with battery. Or passionate embrace. I'm not sure which.

You just *know* the story will be a little different when they get back to the condo clubhouse and play cards with their friends.

"So I looked at him real dirty, y'know? And I told him I was sore with him and I was gonna knock his block off. And he said he was gonna knock MY block off! I told him to try it! I put up my dukes and he put up his dukes and we went at it! He tried a right cross and I blocked it, and I sucker punched him right in the kidneys! Then the cops came and tried to break us up, but we was too much for 'em....." blah blah blah

It will sound much better than "He gave me a dirty look, grabbed my neck in what looked like a passionate embrace and we both lost our balance and fell on our squishy Depends...."

Porsche914 2009-10-16 09:14:42 AM
The men grabbed each other by the neck and tumbled to the ground in a flurry of punches.

The reporter apparently watched a different video. All I heard was a flurry of groans and bones creaking.
