I like his quirky movies.

Darjeeling Limited was very colorful.

Rushmore is a top five favorite. I really like his work.

Top 10 for me. Bottle Rocket definitely top 5. And I enjoyed The Life Aquatic - tennenbaums's not so much and I haven't seen darjeeling. I like the guy because he's an honest filmmaker - he puts an honest effort out there for us to pick apart, but he's always trying and it's always a bit risky. I strongly prefer a failed risky effort at something to a sure thing at the box office that's just formulaic crap. And the new stop motion thing looks pretty cool.

I don't know what it is, but Life Aquatic gets me every time. Murray choking out, "I wonder if he remembers me" is one of the saddest lines I can recall seeing in a movie. It's also very funny and one of my favorites.

What's the big deal about him directing this from e-mail, anyway? It's a stop-motion movie. They take a picture, move something a centimeter, take a picture, etc. He doesn't need to be sitting there the whole time.

That would be the worst stop motion movie of all time.
OF ALL TIME.

I love his work. All his movies are in my top 10, kinda like a group.

But he is definitely an elitist type weird fellow. I guess that's what gives his movies the qualities that we like.

No, no, a centimetre is too much; it has to be just a tiny amount.

i make commercials, so i'm getting a kick... etc., etc.

actually, when i shoot a live-action spot, i'm always on-set. but when we do an animation piece, i usually approve stuff via quicktimes or jpegs at a distance since a three-second bit of film can take a week to animate. this whole "he wasn't on the set" thing is just silly.

I would agree. It's unlikely I'll be hanging out with him any time soon so if he's a douche, who cares? His movies definitely have a feel partially created by the excellent music he (or whomever) chooses. Whatever it is, it works. For me anyway.

FTFA Leave it to captain bow tie to explain their disagreement with a fancy clothing metaphor. Obviously I'm disappointed they're not fighting more, but what can you expect from guys named "Wes" and "Tristan"? I imagine they'd settle disagreements through barbershop quartet. Otherwise Wes could get grass stains on his breeches, and that makes the headmistress ever so cross.

I hate, hate, hate, hate the writing style of celebrity blogs so much.

Bow ties? That's not to say bow ties are elitist, but bow ties are often worn by people described as elitist. That's the best I can do - I just watch the man's movies, I don't know anything about his education, politics, or personal stances on anything... and I'm cool with that.

I can't tell if you're joking, or not.

Well, if not actual elitism, then he's guilty of the pursuit for perceived elitism. But that's just his thing.

No, not sure why you'd think I was joking. I admit that I haven't read a lot of interviews with the guy, and am wondering what you've heard or read that indicates he looks down on people who don't have his social standing or education, which is what "elitist" means.

Super Chronic 2009-10-15 06:18:30 PM
Yeah, yeah, I really liked that movie where Jason Schwartzmann or Bill Murray or one of the Wilson brothers looked all melancholy. Now can someone tell me WTF that blog post is about?

i think everything after Royal Tenebaums borders dangerously along the cusp of pretentiousness. But its hard to blame him. He found success with a certain style, and when you attempt to use that style in 5 movies in a row, eventually it will no longer be genuine, no matter how hard you try.

I agree, it's time for him to stretch a little.

It wouldn't be original, but I'd love to revisit Bottle Rocket and see what Bob and Dignan and Futre Man are up to these days.

Bottle Rocket unwatchable.
Rushmore OK.
Royal Tenenbaums unwatchable.

Never bothered after that.

A little too pretentious and lacking in passion.

/better than Kevin Smith though, I guess

I love Tenenbaums, mainly because Royal reminds me of my late grandfather.

Royal: I've always been considered an asshole for about as long as I can remember. That's just my style. But I'd really feel blue if I didn't think you were going to forgive me.

Henry Sherman: I don't think you're an asshole, Royal. I just think you're kind of a son of a biatch.

Royal: Well, I really appreciate that.

Like I've said before, he's the perfect choice to direct the upcoming World of Warcraft movie.

fish500: Bottle Rocket

Bottle Rocket is all about the little things. Probably have an inflated soft spot for it because I stumbled onto it before wes anderson was wes anderson and I was surprised that the maker of that little quirky film went on to have such a huge career.

sp0rk_of_psychosis 2009-10-15 09:42:19 PM
I used to work at an indie film theater in Dallas and the head chef when I was there was the Mom of one of the bit actors in Bottle Rocket who was friends with Wes and Luke and Owen. Part of the film was shot in her house. Wes, Owen, and Luke came by a few times and word around the campfire is they always took time out to find her, give a hug and talk for a little bit.

Never got too into his work, watched everything up to Dajeering though, just not my style. Definitely a confident and hit/miss risk taking auteur on the whole, but give me Dazed and Confused any day over anything Wes.

/yeah, got nuthin too

EdgeRunner [TotalFark] 2009-10-16 02:18:03 AM
Hey, I was liking things before you mindless sheep even knew there were things. Now that things have gone all mainstream and everyone likes things, I won't even own a thing anymore. But don't accuse me of finding enjoyment in nothing. I heard the nihilists like nothing, so I don't like that either.

Just rest assured that anything I like is way too hip and important for any of you fools to even know about, let alone like, so obviously I don't like Wes Anderson films because you've heard of them and might potentially like them. Only morons like Wes "People Have Heard Of Him" Anderson.

Jedekai 2009-10-16 02:30:06 AM
Elitist?

From everything I've heard he works just as hard as the actors he works with - except Bill Murray.

/There's some great exchanges between Murray and Anderson on the "Rushmore" and "Life Aquatic" commentaries. Bill Murray = Nightmare From Hell Workaholic (when on set).
//Have not seen Bottle Rocket - apparently I must.
