FTFA: An opinion by the Attorney General's Office concluded the benefit's elimination during this fiscal year would conflict with employees' expectations.

I think their expectations were probably benefits that didn't get taken away out of bigotry.

Knowing the legislature, they'll still want to push this through. They don't care about costing the taxpayers in a potential big civil suit payout as long as they get to put a hurtin' on a few gay people. They also refuse to raise taxes, and are still trying to cut taxes for the wealthiest despite a deficit in the billions, so that's just more roads that won't get fixed.

Cue the retards that say government should get out of the marriage business altogether...

Nevermind the fact that marriage lies at the heart of a whole slew of legal issues. Intestacy, medical decisions for an incapacitated person, taxation issues, etc.

I'm drunk, but I'm sure some sober person can pick up on the point I'm trying to make.

All of which are part of the civil "marriage" contract. Let the government issue those to any consenting adults that want them, and relegate weddings to the legally meaningless position they should be

You're one of those who believe the no vote to be racist in nature aren't you? It was done mainly on the premise of not giving Federal workers another paid holiday. It's why when they passed MLK day finally, they moved Abraham Lincoln Day and George Washington Day into one holiday called President's Day. At the time Federal Employees already had 10 paid federal holidays, they did not want to keep adding more and more. Chavez Day was another day being passed around at the time. How many paid federal holidays do government employees need?

Right, and as a LEGAL issue (which you described) then the separation of church and state should allow for a contractual agreement unladen by moral/religious preference.

Gov. SHOULD step into the Marriage debate and federally uphold that a marriage is a legal contract and therefore should in some manner fall under anti-discrimination law.

austerity101: MyRandomName: How many paid federal holidays do government employees need?

Let's ask Europe.

In the 15 nations of the European Union, by law all full-time employees must be given a minimum of four weeks' paid vacation per year; the same is true for part-time employees who have worked for at least 13 weeks. The notion of "accruing" vacation time doesn't apply; you are generally entitled to your four (or more) weeks of vacation from the moment you're hired. And these vacation days are in addition to statutory holidays scattered throughout the year. There's also an important psychological difference: in the U.S., vacation time is permitted but not usually encouraged-it's treated as an inconvenience to the employer. In Europe, by contrast, it's simply part of the culture; it's what people are supposed to do.

Exactly my point.

Also, I have always refused to feel bad about taking time off that I have earned, even breaks. Some of my coworkers have wondered why I've taken all of my breaks, and all of my vacation time, and I've simply said, "Because I get to. What other reason do I need?" Taking paid time off that is given to you should not be a sign of laziness.

Aaaaaaaaargh, this is a genuine pet peeve of mine.

Ok, see, it was going to pass, no problem. Then, a couple of days before the election, the NFL released a statement saying "You will vote to pass the MLK holiday bill or we will take Super Bowl XXVII somewhere else."

Arizona being what it is, the crowd rose as one to say "FARK YOU NOBODY TELLS US WHAT TO DO" and voted themselves into infamy. Yeah, there were lots of racist jackasses who didn't want the holiday, but it was sheer stubbornness that turned the vote around. Later, the holiday passed by initiative.

That'll only work if you make all marriages now civil unions or gay civil unions actually marriages. Don't need a word play issue down the road.

Please, making it about the word is blowing smoke. By trying to keep the word "marriage" to themselves, fundamentalist Christians open the floodgates for any established church of any kind to use the word, too. That means pagan churches, unitarians, and the more liberal Christian sects, will all get to apply the word "marriage" to the homoseuxal unions they bless. Fighting over the word does not do anything constructive for the debate, since even if they win and all the legal paperwork says "civil union", the actual married people will still call it whatever they want.
