If it's really out of place, it won't survive. I for one will be amused to find out if the Louvre's patrons succumb to-horror-lower class dinning.

If I remember correctly Champs-Élysées has a McDonalds, and I'm sure all the tourists searching for the Mona Lisa will be happy to have a Royale with Cheese.

Classy.

I'm sure it'll appeal to tourists, but, if I may be so bold: if you go to another country EAT THE LOCAL FOOD FOR FARK'S SAKE.

I've heard of so many tourists who go somewhere and then eat McDonald's. WHY?? Why would you do that? You can eat McDonald's at home. Experience something different. Eat where the locals are eating. Go to a grocery store. Learn a little something. You can still find cheap, GOOD food that's just so much better.

Especially somewhere like France where food is practically a religion... *headdesk*

You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

France has become McDonald's biggest market in the world outside of the US, according to the chain. While business in traditional brasseries and bistros is in freefall, the fast food group opened 30 new outlets last year in France and welcomed 450 million customers - up 11 per cent on the previous year.

Ha. Ha.

jekxrb: I've heard of so many tourists who go somewhere and then eat McDonald's.

I think it's wrong to travel and stay in chain hotels and eat at chain restaurant that are the exact same as they are at home. However, it is their money to spend, however much it might sting me.

I don't even care much for McDonalds but after two months of local cuisine, I happened to Hong Kong and practically cried from homesickness while eating a big mac.

Sgt Otter: Isn't there a McDonald's or a Starbucks inside China's Forbidden City?

Starbucks and Forbidden City should show up on a GIS. There is also an American pizza place about 200 yards from the nose of the Sphinx. If you manage to haul your ass up the Acropolis in Athens, you are rewarded for your effort with a flea market atmosphere with vendors selling t shirts and tacky tourist goods. (no chain stuff although that could be different today)

While I agree with the sentiment of your rant, apparently, after RingTFA, McDonalds IS where the locals eat.

Sadly, I think it will survive. During my recent trip to Paris, I grabbed a bite to eat at a "McDo". It was really quite busy and very different than the McDonalds in the US. They are more of a cafe style atmosphere, no huge yellow arch and bright red, and just in general more inviting. They had track lighting, made use of natural grain wood, and the overall color scheme was really earth toned. I was quite surprised.

/The food still sucked
//a bit more zingy, though

Three Crooked Squirrels: While I agree with the sentiment of your rant, apparently, after RingTFA, McDonalds IS where the locals eat.

Frankly, I'm surprised.

I lived in Italy for a year and while there was a McDonald's in the city where I was, the only people who ate at it were teenagers (locals, of course, because I wasn't in a touristy part of Italy). It was never full. I suspect (and I do know people who live in Paris) that the majority of the French clientele are young.

And I didn't mean to rant, just strongly suggest that when people travel they try to experience the local culture as much as possible. I know how hard it is to be away from familiar settings; I travel all the time and between school and excavation am rarely settled. The temptation to have something comforting is very strong. But I urge people to immerse themselves in the local culture of wherever they're visiting as much as possible. You're likely there for only a short time and not only can you learn SO much, but the food will be AMAZINGLY better (avoid 'tourist restaurants', too) and you can meet some really wonderful people.

Just my two cents.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-10-05 12:07:25 AM
jekxrb: . WHY?? W

In some places McDonalds have menu items not sold in the US. Also the food tastes different. I'll admit to visiting a McDonalds in Germany just to see how it tastes. My other however many meals? Were local places.

It does. I think there's also already a Starbucks in the same area of the Louvre where this McDonald's is going, so this shouldn't be a huge surprise.

The only time I've ever been in an American chain overseas was a McD in Budapest. The food was awful and the mood was depressing. I shall never do it again.

/I don't even eat that crap at home. But my Austrian buddy just had to have a farking McD burger...

Stopped at a Burger King on the Champs-Élysées years ago - just because we had been eating french fare for weeks and needed a taste of North American fast food instead of croissants and steak tartare.

It is probably in the basement lowest level area of the Louvre. There is a shopping center there. Gift place and Virgin music store. Plus they have the greatest vanilla strawberry swirl soft serve ice cream ever in the Louvre.

There is and I've eaten there. It was crowded as fark and it costed more if you wanted to stay and eat there because space was at a premium.

I think I'm really going to enjoy listening to the blithering idiot that instructs "fine art appreciation" crab assing about this tomorrow. No, she isn't a speaker of English as a second language, she's a farking art major (read that retard).

McDonald's in France is like Le Bernardine in America. Yippee.

I've been to McDonald's in the England, Canada, and Australia aside from the US. Usually i end up there looking for something familiar after a bad food experience. So far, England's was by far the best. The whole experience just felt higher class than any of the others.

I generally agree with you, but I try to set aside *one* meal for an American chain restaurant, just to observe the differences.

It's hard to pass up the chance to have a beer in McD's or KFC.

mekki 2009-10-05 01:03:37 AM
The McDonald's would represent the "American" segment " of a new "food court", and would be situated "among (other) world cuisines and coffee shops," it wrote.

Does this McDonald's really count as American if they take Euros and not dollars, the staff isn't American also they don't speak a lick of English and the menu lists things that are not on the American menu and don't have things that most American McDonald's have?

The only thing that's American about this McDonald's is the name of the chain.

The funny thing is, if it was a true representation of the American segment, you would more likely have a buffet of pizza (both thin and deep dish), pork fried rice, Jambalaya, sushi, deli sandwiches, BBQ, crab cakes and things on a stick (Ask the fly over states). And the hamburgers would look nothing like McDonald's hamburgers.
