that is not a city, its where giant killer robots and Al Gore live

lindseyp [TotalFark] 2003-03-09 01:23:51 PM
Are you aware of the secret tunnels and complexes under your own cities?

Didn't think so.

mandrake 2003-03-09 01:24:34 PM
Feskan: so, basically what you're saying is that Al Gore isn't a giant killer robot? I am confused.

wydok 2003-03-09 01:26:51 PM
Mandrake

I agree that Gore is, in fact, a robot, but he doesn't look like a giant and I haven't seen him kill anyone.

Maybe it's a disguise?

Trell 2003-03-09 01:27:02 PM
Agreed, Mandrake, agreed.

wydok 2003-03-09 01:29:53 PM
Sure, there are underground cities all over. You can only go there when you become ignored by the rest of society. Then you can do interesting things like meet an angel trying to take over the world and slay giant boars.

Well, of course there's a geofront down there. People can't very well live above ground in Tokyo-3 what with the constant angel attacks and all.

Abe 2003-03-09 01:34:43 PM
This isn't as wacky as the typically misleading headline makes it out to be. He's not talking about an actual city, just a network of tunnels that the government won't admit to for some reason.

Really, I wish the name of the Farker that submitted the article was next to the submission. Then we'd know what idiots are writing these headlines.

mandrake 2003-03-09 01:35:44 PM
Teenwolf: that's why the city itself goes underground.

karlmer 2003-03-09 01:37:02 PM
Mr. President, I would not rule out the chance to
preserve a nucleus of human specimens. It would be quite easy... heh heh...Nuclear reactors could provide
power almost indefinitely. Greenhouses could maintain plantlife. Animals could be bred and slaughtered...And a computer could be set and programmed to accept factors from youth, health, sexual fertility, intelligence, and a cross section of necessary skills...Of course it would be absolutely vital that our top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required principles
of leadership and tradition...But ah with the proper breeding techniques and a ratio of say, ten females to each male, I would guess that they could then work
their way back to the present gross national product within say, twenty years...But it is, you know, a sacrifice
required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

dav925 2003-03-09 01:37:27 PM
The tunnels are probably:
A) Godzilla-safe shelters
B) Where they store Godzilla for when they need him to battle another monster
or
c) A load

Lots of tunnels in my hometown.

I have been working construction demolitionin buildings and been shown old, unused doors to tunnels, few people know their specific purpose.

I am told during Prohibition there were tunnels customers used to walk through to get to speakeasies (sp?) and "hotels" you will find evidence of these types of tunnels in your city possibly.

Well, there are a lot of underground tunnels in Chicago. They were used to carry coal and other stuff to the buildings downtown to alleviate traffic congestion in the 19th Century.

We found outwere reminded of what many forgot about it when the Chicago River leaked and flooded the whole downtown.

venadium 2003-03-09 01:43:18 PM
Why does everyone find this so hard to believe? Maybe if you had actually read the article, you'd realize that this guy is actually investigating unmarked subway tunnels, not a city like the headline suggests. I find it likely that they exist, and also very interesting.

JPGumby 2003-03-09 01:44:44 PM
damn strikeout. "found out" -> "were reminded of what many forgot"

Hell, New York practically has a forgotten city underneath it. What with all the disused sewer and city maintenance tunnels, plus a network of tunnels dug by immigrants to help elude police in the city's early days, etc.

It's amazing what we build then forget.

Unluckyimmortal 2003-03-09 01:57:10 PM
This sounds interesting and not egregiously unlikely. This guy seems to have stumbled accross some significant oddities, and people are shunning his work because of it. What does this indicate to you?

wydok 2003-03-09 01:57:43 PM
I'll jump in on the "tunnels in my town" bandwagon.

There are a few tunnels in my hometown between an in and a Moravian church that were supposedly used during the American Revolution.

wydok 2003-03-09 01:59:02 PM
Abe:

You know, my wife said the very same thing. Oh, and it was me. :P

I know what the article said, but I thought the headline was interesting anyway :P

wydok 2003-03-09 02:01:40 PM
"vidence of a network of tunnels and possibly an underground city beneath Tokyo that the public is totally unaware of"

Sounds like tunnels and a city. Not just tunnels. Who was complaining again? :P

InfidelCastro 2003-03-09 02:10:25 PM
Bah. Everyone knows Tokyo's going to be destroyed in the 2030's. Good thing Genom will provide those nice boomers to help fix things up...

Eyesonlyus: I think you should spend less time thinking about departed Farkers. It's just weird. Oh, and Lain's awesome, by the way. Freaky as hell, and extremely confusing, but great, nonetheless.

Damn you Teenwolf for beating me to it!!! **shakes fist at you angrily**

In France, i think its Paris, cant remember but it has a huge network of underground tunnels from the middle ages i believe, and they are filled with bones

StomachMonkey 2003-03-09 02:23:23 PM
lol Wydok. That book was cool.

Anyways...I think I'm going to go to Tokyo with my pokemon balls and and walk around in the underground. I hear that there are lots of Geodudes and Onix down there. I'm gonna be a pokemon master!!!

wumpus 2003-03-09 02:26:14 PM
there actually an underground city under my town. It's been closed up for about 75 years. My town used to have a lot of brothels and bars it was a big logging town. there is a network of loarge tunnels all through the city. not just tunnels there are storefronts and lights too.

DYXautic 2003-03-09 02:28:45 PM
There's also a portal to another demension under my bed.

What, no "Little Monsters" reference?

OBB 2003-03-09 02:28:55 PM
Haalen - You're right, it's Paris. The Catacombs are really cool and spooky... When you're down there it's like being in a World War 2 movie with the French Resistance... except with the walls lined with skulls.

grend123 2003-03-09 02:31:00 PM
awesome reference

Tribs 2003-03-09 02:33:01 PM
Most old cities have old, forgotten tunnels. Sometimes it's easier to just build a new layer on top of the old. Paris has the Catacombs. Even Edinburgh goes down several layers below the visible. They're not exactly secret - just forgotten about, sealed off or off-limits to the public for safety reasons.

telemakhos 2003-03-09 02:34:28 PM
I wonder how many of the ultra-secret military conspiracy faction ark-ii tunnels this guy's writing about are really old sidings used to shunt cars from track to track, or for maintenance and so forth.

As for drilling through old concrete and routes changing direction in places, the system was probably renovated and modernized from time to time. The subway authority's unwillingness to share details probably stems from governmental fears of an attack on the subway system akin to the sarin gas attack a few years back. If you knew exactly where shunts or old tunnels connected separate lines, you could deliver a more effective attack.

Admittedly there probably are some underground passages and structures for governmental, military or emergency use, much as Washington DC has bunkers and even a special transport system underground for Congress to travel between the Capitol and the Congressional office buildings. Richmond, VA, has a network of tunnels under Capitol Square that also connect most of the office buildings and the Capitol itself to the Executive Mansion and the Medical College of Virginia, for obvious reasons (though the MCV and Executive Mansion corridors are shut off by iron grilles).

Shadeyboi, don't forget our "secret" subway stations :) Aka Lower Bay station, Lower Queen station, and there's a whole subway tunnel sitting under Eglinton Ave. west that was begun but canned... apparently the tunnel exists but no stations or tracks were ever built.

One site that has a lot of cool stories about tunnels and abandoned places (includes a photo tour of an abandoned missile silo!) Infiltration.org

"Why am I ignored? Can I be on to something, and there is a conspiracy to silence me? I believe so."

why are you such a freak, could it be that you are a tard, I believe so.

Back in my college (Ohio University) town of Athens, Ohio, there was a tremendous maze of tunnels that I personally have seen. They had been made to make centralized distribution of heating oil, lantern gas (its an old school) and later electricity easier. Interestingly, the federal government had also spent some time there, as it is in the middle of no-where, at the end of Route 50, which has its other end in Washington, D.C., and had put an extrordinary amount of money into making it one of their possible "Nuclear", or if you're a GW fan "Nucular" attack, etc. interestingly enough, the tunnels were part of the draw, as personnel could go from concrete building to concrete building without ever going outside, etc, so the Japanese may have a similar structure, and are keeping it a bit coser to the capitol, since I imagine that the infrastructure surrounding and including Tokyo would be extremely difficult to enable a political/military(yeah yeah... police) evacuation, so down is the way to go, and then traveling through even the public tunnels would be a much safer and prudent method of reaching their "fallout shelter" or may even BE the site of their 2nd capitol. Interesting read. I'l have to see what else there is. I'm not so sure that no-one has been able to walk down that tunnel, etc.

he doesn't need to worry about future income. There are a lot of press outlets in the U.S. who will offer him a job.
