From my experience of being white and having lived in Hawaii for years, you usually only get attacked and called "haole" in situations where you'd still have gotten the shiat kicked out of you even if you were a native.

Definitely. Google around the names in that article (Conklin, Trask) and you can read forever. Having done so a while back, I suppose my feelings on a lot of it are mixed, but these type of incidents in TFA are definitely not cool.

It seems stuff has been ramping up in the past decade or two as the sovereignty movements (yes, more than one!) have gained momentum. However, I do find it interesting that (1) the 11 year old white twin girls mentioned in this article were born and raised in Hawaii, NOT recent arrivals (if their mom has lived there for 25 years) and (2) it seems most of the ire is reserved for specifically haoles (who are white, yes), not other equally non-native people of various Asian descent (who are in fact more numerous).

Well, that's easy enough to explain. The people who really mistreated the Hawaiians historically were white. White missionaries intentionally spreading diseases amongst them, white-owned corporations pretty much stealing their land and making them have to work borderline slave labor to survive, and white Americans overthrowing their government. Asians and such were mostly just along for the ride, and often in similar farked up situations there as the natives.

Looks like our friends in Hawaii need a reminder that they are part of the 50 states. They need to be relocated to a place they would rather not be, such as Afghanistan, so they can readjust their attitude and appreciate what they have as a US State. Huh. My parents knew a mixed-race couple who met in Hawaii (Hawaiian/Asian woman, white man) and while they lived there, the husband got a lot of racist crap. But that was probably back in the 60's. They came over stateside and it was the occasional KKK-wannabe harassment instead. Fast forward to now, I'd think a lot of this shiat would've died down.

I recently met a guy from Hawaii who sung its praises up and down and said it was a wonderful place full of Aloha. The guy was white but tanned really dark. Maybe it's a question of skin tone?

Yesterday, while walking home in Kapa'a (Kauai) I had a Hawaiian (well, hard to say these days who is and who isn't) throw a gas can at me and my wife.

Why, you ask?

Well, simply: I looked at him. Not funny, not rude - just looked. He was pouring water out of the can onto his feet, and I thought it was amusing he was using a gas can, so I looked. His friend, who has half-heartedly trying to calm him down, yelled out "just stop lookin' brah".

In Hawai'i, apparently, I am not allowed to look at people on my walk home from the grocery store.

Dang. At least the Native Americans had the balls to fight for their land. Those Hawaiians just rolled over and let us take it. What a bunch of losers.

Back in the early 80's, I went to a bar just off Waikiki with my girlfriend. After ordering drinks, we suddenly noticed that we were the only non-natives in the bar. We got a lot of dirty looks. We sucked down our drinks, left a big tip, and got out of there. Was the only time in my life that I felt uncomfortable in my skin.

I'm a white woman and dress modestly. I used to get harassed all the time by black guys, when I was walking around by myself in Chicago (Hyde Park, then Roger's Park). It was starting to make me racist. Then I saw a black guy do the same to a black woman, and around that time moved to a different neighborhood (Andersonville/Uptown) where I got more equal harassment from white and black crazy bums, meanwhile observing that my black middle class coworkers acted completely differently.

Long story short, I figured out that it's a socioeconomic thing and some poor black guys will insult anyone they think will not put up a fight, which is actually similar to a lot of poor white guys. Bullying to boost fragile self esteem.

BTW I used to see a redheaded white kid hanging out with black gang types, harassing Hispanic kids in Roger's Park. That was kinda odd.

If I recall from my modern Hawaiian history class in high school (yes, a real course) there were a few uprisings against the Republic of Hawaii, the provisional state in between the Kingdom and U.S. Territory status. The guy who led the rebellions then became a territorial delegate to the US congress. Yes, I bit, but only a little.

I was in Hawaii while I was in the Navy. I was never on the receiving end of any sort of racism, but I always heard about it. With so many tropical destinations available, I have no idea why anyone would want to visit that place, honesty. Worse than racism, it's freakin EXPENSIVE there!

I traveled to Belfast, Northern Ireland and was told that no one would bother me if I didn't act like an arse. I stayed on high alert with the obvious problems they have there. I suppose that is true with any culture. If you get your ass whipped, chances are you probably deserved it...no matter what color your skin is.

Lived there for 4 years. Worked at Island Air and Hawaiian Airline. Never had a problem , worked in the same building as the tough guy baggage handlers, played softball with them, went out after work with them, never had a problem.

Heck, I even played BBALL at Mililani Park at Night with some sketchy locals and never got any grief.

You get the same dumb crap at any tourist-heavy town. Hawaii, California coast, Jersey shore... in many cases, the 'townies' are dirt-poor because everything dries up in the off-season, and there's a heavy resentment of their dependency on tourist dollars from people of higher means than them.

Hell, look at Wildwood, NJ. (Using it because I know it best.) Beautiful beach resort over the summer, but an absolute ghetto nine months out of the year. Go into the middle of town where you can't see the ocean, and you might as well be in any run-down city. Even their school district is an Abbott district, meaning they get extra money because they're in such dire straits; their company on that list includes Trenton, New Brunswick, and most of Hudson County. Rough stuff for a 'beach vacation paradise'. Doesn't surprise me that other such places have people acting similarly.

I lived in Hawaii for 8 years. I can tell you that the statement:

Is very true. Too many people (they don't have to be white) come from the mainland U.S. and have an air of superiority about them. Humble yourself and you too can have life long Hawaiian friends like me.
