luckily consumers that want to show off their commitment to breast cancer can still buy pink hats, coffee mugs, laptop computers, tshirts, shoes, bracelets, professional sports tie-ins, etc.

And from the proceeds of those, just like the pink plates, a percentage* will go towards breast cancer research and helping the sufferers of breast cancer.

* 0% is a percentage.

Hmm ... the politicians suck, but then so does the prevailing attitude that breast cancer > every other disease in the world.

My mother has survived leukemia and skin cancer. And ovarian cancer, which might have reached the critical stage because her male doctors wanted to "keep an eye on it". She finally found a female doctor, and is doing fine.

\Yeah, I know, cool story bro.
\\Honest Bender, I'm with ya. All cancer sucks.
\\\ Not saying breast cancer isn't important, but when my mom was scared about dying and looking for a support group near her, we couldn't find anything.

The state is charging $25 and then giving that money to a great cause dealing with the issue that the license plate deals with... and somehow someone finds a problem with this?

?!?!??!?!?!

VictoryCabal [TotalFark] 2009-07-20 11:46:51 PM
We're going to need a lot of pink ribbon car magnets to fill this gap.

Hannibal222 2009-07-20 11:46:55 PM
Did anyone RTFA? The politicians actually wanted to DO something with the plates but the "mission" was to spread awareness about the "crusade" against breast cancer. Like nobody knew breast cancer existed already.

Jake, if I read the article correctly, the state is taking most of the money from the plates for highway maintence. I could be wrong.

LadyMech: Jake, if I read the article correctly, the state is taking most of the money from the plates for highway maintence. I could be wrong.

Nope, LadyMech is spot on. The state was already charging $25 for the plate - and none of that was going towards fighting breast cancer.

Naturally, when people figured this out, they screamed 'false advertising'. So instead of doing the right thing and redirecting those funds from here on out, the genius legislature added another $25 fee that WOULD be donated.

From the comments:

"I'm so tired of hearing about breast cancer and "the cure". Breast cancer has a 86%-90% cure rate. What other major cancer has that? I have a relative with HepC. HepC has a 0% cure rate. It doesnt get nearly the coverage that breast cancer gets. No special plates, no special anything."

LadyMech: Jake, if I read the article correctly, the state is taking most of the money from the plates for highway maintence. I could be wrong.

Basically, the state is taking ALL the money from the plate to go to highway maintenance and such, just like any other plate. And everyone was fine with that. A law got passed adding an extra $25 fee that goes to help uninsured women with breast cancer. The woman who created the plate was shocked, I say shocked, that money generated by the plate would go to help someone, and pulled the states permission to use her design.

NotATFer, that's the point I don't get. Why would you be upset about the money helping the people. Yes, she mentioned that the money wasn't going to research, but until there is a better health care system, I'd rather the money go towards helping patients with pills or bills.

Also, how is the extra payment any different from some of the other special charity plates different states have? Although, it's likely the most exspensive plate.

Yeah. I feel your confusion too.

It's not like those specialty plates are free to make. Probably pretty damn expensive to when you figure in the cost of that special pink durable paint.

I had no problem paying $50 to the Veterans Home to get my cool Army Vet plate.

Actually, it seems that the problem here is that the $25 is going to treatment, rather than research. However, I still don't see the problem.

The article says that the one time $25 fee will go to helping uninsured women with breast cancer, and not towards research. I fail to see how this is bad. Plenty of money gets thrown into research. How about helping women that don't have the ability to pay to fight cancer. Sounds noble to me. I fail to see where the problem lies.

Add me to the list of people that are sick and tired of hearing about breast cancer and "the race for the cure". We get it, everyone wants to save the boobies. You can call me names all you want to, but I am truly sick and tired of all the pink products out there. I'm sure that 99% of the pink products out there don't even donate one penny to research. The marketing people know that if they make something pink, women will buy it.

There are so many other noble causes out there that would be happy with 1/10 of the money that breast cancer research gets. Where I work, I am in charge of donation requests. Anytime I get a donation request for anything having to do with breast cancer, the request gets my big "hell-motherfarking-no" stamp.

LadyMech: Also, how is the extra payment any different from some of the other special charity plates different states have? Although, it's likely the most exspensive plate.

I don't think so - I looked into getting the Raptors one and I can't remember what the state charged, but you also had to donate directly to some raptor foundation...why go on memory - I just looked it up - $50 to the state and you have to join the Raptor Education Foundation (but they're running a special, it's only %19.95 right now - I think it was a $60 membership when I considered it), so no it's not the most expensive plate.

This description of the events is spot on. The woman who "created" the plates was okay with the money going towards the general highway fund.

Then a state rep (and cancer survivor) decides to add a one time charge to the plate to help poor uninsured women treat their cancer. This move is supported by the Colorado Breast Cancer Coalition. But woman who "created" the plates doesn't like the idea, and because the her design cannot be used without her permission, the state has to come up with a new breast cancer awareness plate.

This has nothing to do with politicians and everything to do with a woman who was annoyed that someone else was going to improve on her idea.

One Thirty-two and Bush 2009-07-21 01:04:54 AM
Can I get a refund on my plate? I thought it was to help give women breast cancer.
