Suede head: I can quite believe it. Western women are turning into bad copies of men, all the bad stuff without the redeeming male qualities. As for the slut tattoos, piercings and cigarettes - uurgh. Japanese women seem unafraid to be feminine.

I'll back this up. It's at a cost to them, though. Men and women are not really equals in Japanese society (at least, less so than in US society). That said, as a man, I absolutely loved it and, yes, I feel it has changed my sensibilities. It is precisely their femininity that is so alluring. I feel sort of guilty admitting that, since it's almost like I'm disappointed that American women aren't a certain way that most would consider a step backwards. I just can't deny how nice it was. Also, they take cute to a whole 'nother level.

And people still ask me why I love Japan so much.
After seeing these pics, how could anyone wonder?
Thankfully Hello Kitty didn't collapse the economy.
If you think you'd do well visiting an alien planet, just visit Japan to see!
And remember, Japans aboriginals are blond haired, blue eyed, light skinned people called the Ainu.
The Ainu have been pushed to Hokkaido, and the little yellow Japanese are trying to breed them out of existance, so go visit them today!
You can stop by the grave of Jesus Christ, his wife Mary, and their kids while on Hokkaido.

And as far as the WWII propaganda posters?
Good for them. Japan attacked without warning and deserved everything they got.

Oh! and btw: you want to racism? Go to Japan, one of the most racist nations out there. Don't get me wrong, I like Jap stuff/culture/history etc and that's why I know about their racism.

Systematically went thru Korea and China trying to do to them what Hilter did to the Jews, gypsies, etc. Read the 'Rape of Nanking'.

Also the Nipon word for foreigner is 'ganjin' (sp?) which transtates LITERALLY as 'barbarian'; not immigrant, not foreigner, not visitor but barbarian. That should give you an idea of their cultural background.

Yeah they are pretty damn racist. I'm black and japanese but the japanese people act almost as bad as rednecks, the only reason they aren't as bad is that they are a little quieter about their racism(at least around me).

YOU ARE A FARKING IDIOT.

First of all, the word is GAIJIN

Jin is a suffix added that means "person of." A Japanese person would refer to themselves as Nihonjin.

Gai means OUTSIDE. The kanji translates to Gai when it is combined with another kanji, and soto when it stands by itself.

Put it all together, the word literally translates to "person of the outside."

In CHINA their word for foreigner is barbarian. But it is an incomplete translation. They do not mean barbarian the way we think it is. For example, Confucius states that
"When there is nothing left to learn from our kings
Then you must learn from the barbarians to the north, west, east, and south."

I don't think the word barbarian is used in contempt in that sentence.

Learn the language, or don't talk about it. If you want to talk about Japanese racism you could have found much better, smarter, and truer things to mention.

True that. Five years there and yeah, it is a very racist and misogynistic society.
Women and men are not equal, and no foreigner will ever be equal.

These pics are the equivalent of going to a Wal-Mart with a camera or a Sci-Fi Con. There's freaks amongst it all but it's not the majority.

I only spent a few weeks there and I got pretty immune to the weirdness.

One thing for you leg men out there: GO TO TOKYO.
In big cities all women between the ages of 15 and 35 seem to wear tiny, tiny mini-skirts or tiny, tiny shorts ALL THE FARKING TIME. If it's cold they just throw on a pair of fishnets or lacy thigh-highs. It is a leg-man paradise.

So what's it like with the women over there? Are they fairly open about sex? Can you score easily? How can you talk to them? Do they like big white men? I've heard they are quite racist towards whites, won't sit next to one on a train and we apparently smell bad to them.

My (white) friend said that every time he walked into a bar or nightclub in Japan, within minutes at least two hot Japanese girls were all over him, wanting to take him home.

Went to Japan on vacation for a couple of weeks last November. Never felt more at home in my life. Can't wait to go back. Wish I could move there for a while, but I speak no Japanese, and I'd basically have to start over career wise.

If I ever have kids, I'll definitely encourage them to live abroad after college, before settling down.

THIS. The word, barbarians in classical Chinese context is "people who do not believe in Confucian ideas". Nothing more, nothing less. Sad that the Romanticism from the 19th cen. West messed up our whole understanding of history around the world (not just the West).

Quite true about Japanese racism, they also practice it among their own, believing that a lighter skinned japanese is superior in intellect and character to a darker skinned japanese.
The people from Tokyo hate people from Hiroshima, people from Hokkaido hate everyone who isn't. People from Nagasaki are looked down on as it is felt they may have damaged genes.
Of the Gaijin(other people) the lighter skinned or westerners are less likely to experience racism, with the exception of not being welcomed at some neighborhood bath-houses.
Middle easterners, and asians from other places such as China and Korea will find themselves on the outs.
English speaking negroes have little trouble with being discriminated against. Blacks who do not speak english are despised, as are philipios ect..
Nobody really gets thier feelings hurt, japanese racism is a given, it comes of unfamiliar looks and ways.
Sometimes flatbed trucks with huge speakers carry groups of "right wing racists" throuout nieghborhoods denouncing everyone who is not native born. I have seen an 80 something old lady hit one of the guys on the truck with a well thrown sweet potato. She tried apologising to me for the actions of the nihonjin on the truck, but it was not needed. I waved hello as they motored past, four or five smiled and waved back.
Most Japanese enjoy a chance to practise thier english, so even if you are fluent in japanese, they will attempt to speak to you in english.
Learn the culture, the language, and be accepting of offered friendships.
You'll find yourself enjoying many true friends.

The Ainu have been bred nearly out of existance. You'll need to find some pre-war pics to see the people as they were.
The smaller yellow japanese pushed the Ainu from every province, they are now only found on Hokkaido and there has been a real effort to "darken" their race as the treatment of the Ainu, while done by japanese, embarrases the japanese, along with the prior claim to lands which were simply taken by force.

Aboriginals anywhere are just the assholes who last kicked a previous group of assholes out before history started to be written down. Further GIS does show some pics of more honky-like Ainu, though.

Funny thing about the "GTFO" flipping bird pic - it's taken in Korea, but all the people in it are wearing costumes to appear Japanese. Costumes of all the "stereotype images" of Japan, too. There's a maid-cafe girl, an old-school sailor-style school uniform with a red tie, and the bird-flipping kid in front is wearing a kindergarten uniform. Plus there's people wearing what look like costumes from "Dragon Ball."

What the hell is going on in that pic, I'd be interested to know.

More than that though, I've long wondered just what is going on in the "Best Picture Evar" pic with the Oompa-Loompa and person on the stretcher with what looks like the biggest FUPA ever or some oddly misplaced buttocks.

Is there a synopsis? Some crazy con gone wrong? Vegas? Inquiring minds wanna know...

Dressed up in body paint as characters from "Doraemon"... in Hong Kong I think (definitely a traditional-characters Chinese speaking country, and the double decker buses I remember from HK, also that particular type of neon sign).

But yeah, shorts and tennis shoes "WTF??" guy definitely says it all :D Kicks the pic into greatness category.

So these things make two kinds of sense. First if you were stuck on a six hour layover in Atlanta, you'd be happy to pay $30 to lay down an catch some shut eye. In Atlanta you can't, in Tokyo you can. Second Japanese businessmen are paid a stipend when traveling, what ever of that they don't spend, they keep. Thus the market for stuff like this. Stipend $100/day. Hotel $80/night. Bed in a box $40/night.
