Yeah, quite a lot aren't from Japan. There are subtle clues, like, oh, I dunno, kids dressed in costumes from the 2008 summer olympics (in China) and - I know this is a tricky one - a crowd of people with Korean flags.

TFA clearly states "Asia" so Subby gets no points in either Russian or geography. :)

Sorta looking forward to going to Japan this fall, now... but is it "Nihonjin kanojo chijo boshu-chu" or "Nihonjin chijo kanojo boshu-chu" or will just "Nihonjin chijo boshu-chu" suffice?

Let's see... I'll take a couple of the blue uniform chicks from the Louis Vuitton store, maaaybe the first chick in the box, DEFINITELY the second, possibly the laptop-using geisha, the chick with the dog pocketbook, several of the orange shirt chicks, the chick with her hand down the drunk guy's pants, the one in the maid costume (on the street with the school girl and the blue haired chick), aand I think that's it.

Indeed. And, I'm pretty sure the 3 girls on the scooter is Thailand (at least, those look more like Thai school uniforms to me), as is the picture of the girl getting soaked by a bunch of guys with water guns (that is the Songkran festival - basically a 3 day nationwide water fight, and a hell of a good time :D ).

Still, a lot of pictures in there that made me miss living in Japan.

There's also one a a group of three girls in costume. Can anyone offer a clue? I know back in the day, virtually all Japanese skin mags were crotchless so I get the pendulum swing, but why protect the opportunists?

It's to make it seem more realistic, as if the guy doesn't want to be caught. If you don't get it then voyeur porn isn't for you, go jack off to playboy or something.

I stayed in one of those capsule hotels in Tokyo for a night.
I left the next day because I couldn't find the shower. The place was huge. They make you put your clothes in a locker and give you a robe, so that is what you wear while you are there. It's all guys, no ladies. I looked and looked for a shower. the place had several floors. I found sinks and toilets, a massage place and a hot tub in the same room with a restaurant and about a dozen guys watching cartoons on a small movie screen, but never found a shower. I just couldn't bring myself to get in a hot tub in the same room as a restaurant and a make shift movie theater.

So let me get this straight, you have almost a dozen guys clustered around a mini-shirted chick displaying her hoo-ha, busy taking video/picture. However, it appeals to the voyeuristic nature of guys like yourself as being "more realistic" having their faces blurred? To belabor the point, you wouldn't be able to get a stiffy if it was just a regular, "Oh, there are a bunch of guys photographing some chick showing off her crotch!" picture, but with the blurring you're all over it?

To avoid having to get model releases from each recognizable person in the picture, should the photographer have the opportunity to sell or publish it in a for profit medium.

Huh. So the "focus" of the picture, without the blurring, would be assumed to have signed a release? Or was the scene staged on her behalf? What would the upshot that be?

I wouldn't be surprised that any one culture I know little about turned out to be a hotbed of racism, but one word's etymology and something that happened a while ago doesn't prove anything.

uhhh...no.

外人 - gaijin - literally "outside person", and the best translation for it is "non-Japanese" because a Japanese person would never consider themselves "gaijin" when visiting another country.

The best word in Japanese for foreigner is 外国人 "gaikokujin", literally "other country person".

Nice try, though.

MojaveVista: my buddy lived over there for afew years and he says all it comes down to is that they love our American culture and are trying to westernize Japan except they take it "alittle" to far.

I disagree with this. It's arrogant to think they do it because they love "our" culture. They have a lot of American influence, surely, but they're hardly emulating us. You'll also find much more significant influences from China and Korea (especially in cuisine). I only lived there for a couple of months, but I didn't see anything that made me think they were trying to emulate Americans. They take what they like from any culture and make it their own... same as anywhere else. I was in a smaller town and there was absolutely nothing "American" that I could see. English was extremely rare and any English language I ran into seemed more like a novelty on the other speaker's part. Tokyo is an entirely different story, of course, but I think it's comparable to New York City. It's very international and metropolitan... you'll get a lot of influences from all over the place.

I think Chinese is going to supplant English as the preferred second language of choice, though I also ran into Spanish speakers and someone who is studying French. Also, some of the English was based on the Queen's English, and not even American. More Japanese are supposedly interested in visiting Canada than the US. British Columbia was a very popular tourist destination.

I think we take too much credit for their Westernization. Influential, yes. Emulating us? No way.

I'm curious what made your friend think that.

YOU ARE A FARKING IDIOT.

First of all, the word is GAIJIN

Jin is a suffix added that means "person of." A Japanese person would refer to themselves as Nihonjin.

Gai means OUTSIDE. The kanji translates to Gai when it is combined with another kanji, and soto when it stands by itself.

Put it all together, the word literally translates to "person of the outside."

In CHINA their word for foreigner is barbarian. But it is an incomplete translation. They do not mean barbarian the way we think it is. For example, Confucius states that
"When there is nothing left to learn from our kings
Then you must learn from the barbarians to the north, west, east, and south."

I don't think the word barbarian is used in contempt in that sentence.

Learn the language, or don't talk about it. If you want to talk about Japanese racism you could have found much better, smarter, and truer things to mention.

Women and men are not equal, and no foreigner will ever be equal.

I've heard they are quite racist towards whites, won't sit next to one on a train and we apparently smell bad to them.

My (white) friend said that every time he walked into a bar or nightclub in Japan, within minutes at least two hot Japanese girls were all over him, wanting to take him home.

Holy shiat! That's it, I'm going. Uh, you don't work for the Japanese Tourist Board, do you?

No, not at all.

I've had similar experiences in Korea, as well.

halB: In CHINA their word for foreigner is barbarian. But it is an incomplete translation. They do not mean barbarian the way we think it is. For example, Confucius states that
"When there is nothing left to learn from our kings
Then you must learn from the barbarians to the north, west, east, and south."

THIS. The word, barbarians in classical Chinese context is "people who do not believe in Confucian ideas". Nothing more, nothing less. Sad that the Romanticism from the 19th cen. West messed up our whole understanding of history around the world (not just the West).

Yup. (i got sick of the '....' not working)

And as far as the WWII propaganda posters?
Good for them. Japan attacked without warning and deserved everything they got.

Oh! and btw: you want to racism? Go to Japan, one of the most racist nations out there. Don't get me wrong, I like Jap stuff/culture/history etc and that's why I know about their racism.

Systematically went thru Korea and China trying to do to them what Hilter did to the Jews, gypsies, etc. Read the 'Rape of Nanking'.

Also the Nipon word for foreigner is 'ganjin' (sp?) which transtates LITERALLY as 'barbarian'; not immigrant, not foreigner, not visitor but barbarian. That should give you an idea of their cultural background.

Yeah they are pretty damn racist. I'm black and japanese but the japanese people act almost as bad as rednecks, the only reason they aren't as bad is that they are a little quieter about their racism(at least around me).

Quite true about Japanese racism, they also practice it among their own, believing that a lighter skinned japanese is superior in intellect and character to a darker skinned japanese.
The people from Tokyo hate people from Hiroshima, people from Hokkaido hate everyone who isn't. People from Nagasaki are looked down on as it is felt they may have damaged genes.
Of the Gaijin(other people) the lighter skinned or westerners are less likely to experience racism, with the exception of not being welcomed at some neighborhood bath-houses.
Middle easterners, and asians from other places such as China and Korea will find themselves on the outs.
English speaking negroes have little trouble with being discriminated against. Blacks who do not speak english are despised, as are philipios ect..
Nobody really gets thier feelings hurt, japanese racism is a given, it comes of unfamiliar looks and ways.
Sometimes flatbed trucks with huge speakers carry groups of "right wing racists" throuout nieghborhoods denouncing everyone who is not native born. I have seen an 80 something old lady hit one of the guys on the truck with a well thrown sweet potato. She tried apologising to me for the actions of the nihonjin on the truck, but it was not needed. I waved hello as they motored past, four or five smiled and waved back.
Most Japanese enjoy a chance to practise thier english, so even if you are fluent in japanese, they will attempt to speak to you in english.
Learn the culture, the language, and be accepting of offered friendships.
You'll find yourself enjoying many true friends.

The Ainu have been bred nearly out of existance. You'll need to find some pre-war pics to see the people as they were.
The smaller yellow japanese pushed the Ainu from every province, they are now only found on Hokkaido and there has been a real effort to "darken" their race as the treatment of the Ainu, while done by japanese, embarrases the japanese, along with the prior claim to lands which were simply taken by force.

Funny thing about the "GTFO" flipping bird pic - it's taken in Korea, but all the people in it are wearing costumes to appear Japanese. Costumes of all the "stereotype images" of Japan, too. There's a maid-cafe girl, an old-school sailor-style school uniform with a red tie, and the bird-flipping kid in front is wearing a kindergarten uniform. Plus there's people wearing what look like costumes from "Dragon Ball."

What the hell is going on in that pic, I'd be interested to know.

More than that though, I've long wondered just what is going on in the "Best Picture Evar" pic with the Oompa-Loompa and person on the stretcher with what looks like the biggest FUPA ever or some oddly misplaced buttocks.

So these things make two kinds of sense. First if you were stuck on a six hour layover in Atlanta, you'd be happy to pay $30 to lay down an catch some shut eye. In Atlanta you can't, in Tokyo you can. Second Japanese businessmen are paid a stipend when traveling, what ever of that they don't spend, they keep. Thus the market for stuff like this. Stipend $100/day. Hotel $80/night. Bed in a box $40/night.

The backless suit is a standard funeral business item and is used all over the world. The 2 ugly trannies in schoolgirl uniforms wouldn't get a second glance at a gay pride parade in Frisco. Oh look, there are gays in Japan, whodathunkit.

If you look at old Japanese TV shows you'll see that right about the time of the Stonewall riots they were showing samurai in bed with shiata boys (tongue boys) because they never had any real hang ups about homosexuality. It was another 20+ years before they showed 2 gay guys in bed together and I don't think they have shown homosexual pedophilia on TV in the U.S. yet.

LOLZ! The original Surfer Dude and Dudette must have pushed W-A-Y out in search of the perfect wave, found it, but it was goin the wrong way.

Actually no one really is sure about the origin of the Ainu, for a while it was believed they descended from the Huns, but Atilla and the gang aren't really very caucazoid.
It's like calling all white people caucasian.
There have been races of gigantic Sammy Hagars, they didn't hail from the caucasius mountains.
Caucasian grates upon the ears of Celtics, and of Anglo-Saxons, even though descriptors have attempted to connect every light skinned people to the Caucasius, it is simply not true.
In Russia caucasians are seen as an underclass (unless they are wealthy, then like any other wealthy person there they magically become Russians).
White nomads have without doubt created settlements and have developed into kingdoms and the like.
White people don't realy just pop up sometimes.
Since they started teaching that "races" didn't really exist, they have taught the genetics for white people to be recessive. According to the very small amount of study I have into eugenics, one must have grandparents with blond hair and blue eyes to have such coloration.
I suggest to you that those grandparents would have the same requirement.
White people don't just pop up in the sub saharan or among the Watusi, with the exception of an occasional albino.

Let's see...

I can speak a good amount of Japanese, so I would talk to women in Japanese. Depending on where you are, this may or may not be necessary. Gaijin (foreigner) bars are popular and Japanese people go there specifically to meet foreigners. That said, a little Japanese will get you a long way when it comes to meeting people. It shows that you're legitimately interested. Also, gaijin doesn't mean American. I met people from all over the world with Americans making up a minority. Being American is interesting, but being tall and good looking is better.

If you are tall and look ok (clean and confident?), you will absolutely own any bar/club you go into. The attention you will likely receive is outstanding. Women loved talking to me and meeting them was as easy as saying hello. I wasn't in Tokyo or Osaka, though. When I visited those much larger cities, the novelty of being gaijin was less significant (since they're everywhere), but you're still "special" and will get lots of looks and attention.

A really popular tourist bar area is the Roppongi district of Tokyo. I actually didn't like this area (too trashy) but I found the smaller (700k+) city I was near just about perfect. If you find a gaijin bar in one of these cities, you'd have to try very hard not to meet someone.

Sex is definitely possible. Of course, it depends on the woman, but love hotels (hotels specifically for clandestine liaisons) are very big industry. I wasn't really trying to pick up any women (though I was down with something happening) and I met someone with whom I still have a relationship. I had met someone before her, but the language barrier was too big for me to maintain it. As far as one night stands, it could be as easy as saying "let's go." You are exciting them just by being there.

I didn't experience any direct racism, but they will avoid you on the train. I don't think it has to do with smell (I could be wrong) but just a general preference. They do it to each other as well, but more so to foreigners. I found it quite nice, actually... "Sure, I'll have the whole seat to myself!"

I am now a die-hard fan of Japanese women (and not just because I met someone). Walking around in Tokyo (and anywhere metro, really) was a wonderful experience just for the eye-candy. Jaw-droppingly beautiful women abound. When you do get into a social situation, they are really friendly. I would highly encourage you to find some reason other than the women to go to Japan, though. They will be marvelous company, but I can't imagine you'd get a lot of respect just going for the women. You could always lie about why you're in Japan, I suppose. Not my game, but there's a lot to appreciate about the country, and it would really help your conversations.

The Ainu were never particularly fair skinned or light-eyed, they look and have looked more like Siberians or native Americans than anything. There is some light hair, but that occurs in a lot of otherwise Asian-looking people. As for being natives of Japan, they're not really. They're the natives of the northeast part of Honshuu and of Hokkaido, but there's no evidence they were the same as the Jomon culture Japanese, who would have been their contemporaries on Kyushuu and southwest Honshuu.

They will be marvelous company, but I can't imagine you'd get a lot of respect just going for the women. You could always lie about why you're in Japan, I suppose. Not my game, but there's a lot to appreciate about the country, and it would really help your conversations.

Thanks, man. I'm interested in their culture and history too, but the women are the icing on the cake.

The wierdest thing I have seen from Japan is this very bizarre tv show.

It is somekind of wierd creature who is in middle school likes girls(with a peeping scene into the girls lockers) We also learn that he is lactose intolerant, and also gets morning wood.

Astute observation Jeff, and a statement which is clearly nearly true.
I doubt the Inuit had to push out anybody but polar bears though.

Or, as the racist Inuit call them, "honkey bears".

The wording on the left is a request to be picked up. Like "Please pick me up", but it could be more like "find me" or "get me". I don't understand the writing on the right... It might suggest that she's at home, but I'm not sure what's intended.

On the right it says "don't leave me here."

So yeah, both messages on a box like that is basically saying "free puppy."

Somaticasual: Please tell me that says "free puppy" in japanese..

On the left side, it says "Please take me home." (hirotte kudasai -- lit. "please gather" or "please pick up", but Japanese rarely translates directly).

On the right side, "Don't leave me here." (oite (i)kanadaide -- lit. "don't put down and go", missing the い (i), probably to make it look cuter or something).

Thai Mai Xhu: White people don't realy just pop up sometimes.

I don't know. I didn't care what they called me, as long as they called me. I was there 4 times. Twice in Sasebo and twice in Yokosuka. About a month all together. I had two goals in life. One was getting drunk. You can guess the other.

I'm sure many of the military folks do. My son was on the Kitty Hawk for 3 years and spent much time out in "The Honch" playing in his band.

I'll ask him next time I talk to him. I do know for a fact he managed to spend many a night after gigs with the fine stuff.

If you don`t act like an overbearing, stereotypical "western woman"... Then it really isn`t that hard at all. Taking care of yourself and your body also doesn`t hurt either.
The thing is, it seems like most of the western women in Japan have some kind of weird complex and see Japanese women as horrific evil rivals. Not to mention as an affront to feminism, blah blah blah. If you think that it`s insulting to be expected to make a dinner, then yeah - you`ll probably have some trouble. And if you see the typical Japanese woman`s willingness to do so as disgusting, then your life is going to suck and you`ll likely go insane.

I needed to know, too, so I googled "bunnies oompa loompa ambulance" and came up with this on a long-ass, hard-to-load photo page:

In his latest stunt, promoter Jeff Beacher, dressed a Big Britney, "collapsed" at Jet nightclub at The Mirage on Monday and was wheeled to an awaiting ambulance. Wee Matt, one of Beacher's Oompa Loompas, is holding Beacher's hand. As for the guys in the rabbit suits? Need we say staged? The word is Big Britney is pregnant and expecting on New Year's Eve.

I don't think it is fair to call "stereotypical western women" overbearing any more than it is fair to call Japanese men misogynists or sexist. You make it sound like western women are totally unreasonable for disliking the expectation of being domestic.

The fact is just that western women are raised to consider themselves more independent and strong-willed, and this results in personality traits that are unfamiliar and unexpected for your typical Japanese male. Culture clash, plain and simple; it isn't anyone's fault, nor is it due to anyone being obstinate, difficult, or overbearing. Western women are simply raised with different expectations than Japanese women (or most other women in "the east"), and likewise, Japanese men expect different things of women than us guys in the west do.

You`re right, to a point. The thing is when taken out of the "Western" environment, a lot of women seem to resort to being as stereotypically western as they can pull off. I`ve seen more than one woman pour a bottle of beer on a man who expected her to pour it for him, declaring that a western woman was "better than that!" etc...
Basically, what I wanted to say (and could have found a much better and more clear way of saying it - but followed the flow...) is that if you`re incapable of understanding and following the culture, you will have trouble. It`s not unreasonable to have western expectations... But it is unreasonable to expect them in Japan. Different country, different culture, and all that. Too many people apply their own cultural values to that of another country, and read something into things that just aren`t there.

But really, I meant it about going insane if you find that part of Japanese culture disgusting. It happens. WAY too often. I`ve seen women get to the point where if a woman does ANYTHING for a man, they`re retching and spewing insults at both parties.

I'm certain that's true.
I'd imagine that a woman who grows up in a place where women are encouraged to be strongly independent would, if she were there for a while, get frustrated at (and sick of) a cultural attitude that she feels is oppressive and demeaning. Not that it is justified, but I see why it happens.

Been to Japan twice, would love to go back. The girls there are definitely beautiful. Eye candy everywhere and lots of short, short skirts even in winter. Definitely the style there, and I wasn't complaining!

I'd say that what most people here have posted in regards to the women is true. If you're looking to score, it shouldn't be too hard to find the Japanese girls willing to go that route. Not really my style, so I never tried during either trip. (I was more interested in the actual travel and getting to see/do stuff during my brief time there.) If you can learn a little Japanese, the people in general will be super friendly to you (moreso than usual since they're typically very polite).

I have heard that a lot of Japanese girls aren't exactly adventurous bed, though, so if that's your bag you could be disappointed. Just something I heard from a few English teachers there...

Richard in a Box: I have heard that a lot of Japanese girls aren't exactly adventurous bed, though, so if that's your bag you could be disappointed. Just something I heard from a few English teachers there...

Depends on the girl. My last girlfriend in Japan was rather adventurous. I think the trick is to avoid the Roppongi girls that are just using white guys as fashion accessories (they know they are hot and know that if they put out, guys will buy them stuff, so they have no need to try). Once you get out of the "just shag any hot japanese chick you can" mind set, you can find those you might be a bit more sexually compatible with. It helps to learn some Japanese and get of the beaten path a bit.

In my experience in Japan, girls tended to be a bit more open and nonchalant about sex than in many other places. So, you can find plenty of good sex with a little bit of patience and discretion.
