Dr. Poison: Average looking people have no idea what we're like. We don't sit around talking about you, so why do you do it to us? If it bothers you, there are plenty of places you can visit where there are no people like us - Mexico, China, and Poland for example. Or maybe a quick visit to a plastic surgeon might improve your mood? A little make-up doesn't hurt either. And get yourself some nicer shoes for a change. Maybe fix up your hair a bit, lose some weight and have your teeth whitened.

Awesome!

the girls on america's next top model are supposed to be beautiful to women...which means very very thin. strippers and porn stars appeal to men, so need big boobs and a more average weight. i think both types can be very pretty. it's weird though, that most of the university girls i know would rather have the very very thin look, which doesn't appeal to men as much, when it's men they're going for. i don't quite understand it.

Well, I think they're going for the ultra thin "fashion model" look because if they fall short of it, they're still between "fashion model" and "porn star".

If they slut it up and go for the porn star look, other women will hate them.

Some of the "models" my girlfriend worked with awhile back weren't actually even all that hot. My girl was prettier than all of them, they were either cute but bone skinny with big tits, or sorta ugly with bombshell body. I thought it was pretty funny when she told me they were models later.

Guess they are to good to even be around the general population. The very people who made their shallow careers and existence possible.

I did not think anyone of them looked all that gorgeous.

Without the professional makeup and photoshopping of their shoots they are pretty and above average in beauty but nowhere near what they look like in print it seems they think they are far more valuable to society then they really are.

Giving them their 'own' place to go is more a favor to the general population. IMO

Because, like... by the zero-sum assumption of human traits, y'know, all models are like... really shallow and unintelligent, right? Oh my gawd, ammirite?

Some of us modeled to put ourselves through college and ended up with degrees in computer science and electrical engineering. The author and anyone who prescribes to the generic notion that human traits operate on a zero-sum system can DIAF.

Why is that when someone makes a snarky comment that "fat people are lazy," all holy hell breaks loose and the character of the poster is instantly assassinated? But when someone makes an equally inane comment (let alone a published article!) that implies "models are all stupid," people enthusiastically pile on the approval?

Because you don't need a Ph.D. in fashion to be a successful model: you just need to be tall and thin.

Remember, models can have a very short shelf life; some drop out of college or high school to pursue a career based solely on how they look.

Hardly. A certain (extremely small) subset of models (runway, high fashion) have to be tall and thin. The rest of us have to work our asses off under very strict regimens -- sometimes for many years -- to get and maintain exactly whatever look the agency is trying to market this week. The ones who are not only genetically ideal enough to land a modeling job and land the roughly 1% of available gigs that don't require any extra work to match spec, are a vanishingly small percentage of the industry. I have never met one one of those mythical creatures.

To assume that say... a fitness model, or an underwear model, or even the models on otherwise innocuous aisle markers at a Target somewhere, are just genetically "lucky" and aren't spending the equivalent of 40+ hours/week trying to get and maintain the look their bosses demand, just demonstrates how clueless and petty the accusatory party is.

I'm just annoyed at the shocking double standard: why making inferences about a person's lifestyle, personality, or mental capacities based on looks is completely socially acceptable if they're models, but not if they're at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Like I said, I don't do it anywhere. It was how I put myself through college. But I'm continually shocked how code or other engineering feats I pull off are retroactively downgraded or viewed with higher suspicion once someone finds out I used to model. I've had bosses say to my face, in public: "You know, I was very hesitant to hire you at first, because I was convinced you couldn't be very intelligent. Glad I was wrong!" And rather than reacting with awkwardness or shock at the faux pas, everyone within earshot laughs approvingly.

Maybe being constantly defending oneself from constant snark and perpetual underestimation is why TFA's club was set up in the first place.

Fark that. I got sick of obsessing over not looking perfect. I've decided I'm attractive enough. Don't agree? Whatever. Some of the best people I've ever met weren't much in the looks department. If a small percentage of people wants to be obssesivly shallowing by strapping the blinders on and only seeing whats on the surface, have at it.

Right. And again, this does not require a Ph.D.

The ones who are not only genetically ideal enough to land a modeling job and land the roughly 1% of available gigs that don't require any extra work to match spec, are a vanishingly small percentage of the industry. I have never met one one of those mythical creatures.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here: supermodels or body part models (like hand models for hand creams, etc)? Either way, it doesn't require intelligence or further education.

Getting and maintaining the look the bosses demand does not require a doctoral thesis, which is my point. It might require getting to the gym regularly.

I'm just annoyed at the shocking double standard: why making inferences about a person's lifestyle, personality, or mental capacities based on looks is completely socially acceptable if they're models, but not if they're at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Let's face it: how many intelligent models can you name? How about models with advanced degrees? I can think of only Christy Turlington, who has a business degree (?) and her own company that makes yoga wear.

Like I said, I don't do it anywhere. It was how I put myself through college. But I'm continually shocked how code or other engineering feats I pull off are retroactively downgraded or viewed with higher suspicion once someone finds out I used to model. And rather than reacting with awkwardness or shock at the faux pas, everyone within earshot laughs approvingly.

You're right: there is a double standard. It's because modeling is a field that does not require higher education; it requires good genes and regular gym workouts.
Maybe being constantly defending oneself from constant snark and perpetual underestimation is why TFA's club was set up in the first place.

andrew131: How is this different than any other high end club out there?

Becuase it's a basement of a low-rent burger joint where the proprietor is dating a model and is baldly trying to create a buzz about his shiate hovel by having her and a couple of friend pose for the media and pretend to eat pastrami before they head to the privy for a good upchuck.

nuclear_asshat 2009-07-17 10:48:15 PM
I had a friend who used to bang the occasional model. He worked in some bullshiat media relations compay doing nothing but pretending to be important. Basically what people on "The Hills" do.

He was a pretty good looking dude and was very funny, so he pulled model ass all the time. After a night of drinking I divulged my jealously. He basically said the novelty of banging models wears off extremely quickly. Most are used to guys kissing their asses and spending money on them, and aren't any better in the sack than your average college girl.

Now, I suppose it's one of things things I'd rather tire of myself, but I'll take his word for it.

johnnydrama 2009-07-17 11:16:29 PM
What is interesting about being attractive is how differently the world treats you. The "halo" effect. You don't have to develop a winning personality to get attention or relationships, because these are handed to you through little or no effort. I remember when I used to be attractive and I wished I wasn't, so that people would stop talking about me. You also tend to have lower self esteem because it is likely that your self esteem becomes based on your attractiveness.

I mean, I'm fat and ugly now, but I can still remember those days. I actually prefer being this way, because you get treated like a person and not a body.

- and a bunch of exclusive stuff

jaerik: But when someone makes an equally inane comment (let alone a published article!) that implies "models are all stupid," people enthusiastically pile on the approval?

Because most fat people are at least intelligent enough to know that they are fat, even if they deny it in public.
Most models on the other hand... the ones I have known here in southern cali couldn't win a battle of wits with a cinder block.

There are exceptions of course, but what usually happens when a person gets whatever they want in this life because their parents have money or they hit the genetic "beauty" lottery is that they don't bother to develop their minds or their personalities. Why should they do that? It's too much like work, and when you have to work at something it has more value than when it is handed to you.
