(MSNBC) Interesting Sears Tower now named Willis Tower. Surely there is a joke somewhere in here, if only we knew what they were talking about   (msnbc.msn.com) divider line 167

I honestly can't get too worked up about this. The Sears Tower was named for its corporate owner Sears, Roebuck and Co. Now it's been renamed for it's new corporate owner Willis Group Holdings. That doesn't seem like a huge desecration of history to me.

louiedog 2009-07-16 02:21:42 PM
Dammit. I'm going to Chicago in 2 weeks and was really hoping to see the Sears Tower. No one wants to see a picture of me on facebook in front of the damn Willis Tower! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRGHHHGHGHGHGROOOOOOOO!

Kittrina 2009-07-16 02:21:42 PM
Good luck getting everyone to actually call it that. They tried the same crap in Toronto for their "Rogers Center" its still the damn Skydome

CapitolG 2009-07-16 02:22:42 PM
At who should we(you) be mad?

The folks who pumped money in to the local economy? Or, The Company that chose to bail out on the city of Chicago and sell the building?

Place your anger where it is deserved, not at the folks who pumped millions in to the city.

I was actually stopped today walking to work and a man asked me "Where's the Sears Tower?"
I responded "It doesn't exist anymore."
He's like "What are you talking about?"
And I Interrupted, "Willis Tower. It's over there."

I pointed, and walked away happy.

/it is worth it to note he was foreign, so "what are you talking about" came with an indian accent

I worked in that building for five long, awful years. It was a living hell. Cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and when the wind blows it creeeeeeaks back and forth like an old sailing ship. And the insanity of working for Sears itself was no picnic either.

Fark that place. I don't give a shiat what they call it, I'm never going back.

Me think corporate America has done lost their mind. No one is going to call it the Willis Tower. The only way that you're going to get "Willis Tower" written anywhere is if it's flollwed by "...formerly the Sears Tower..."

Most people don't jump to hearing a Canadian accent when you describe foreign Indians.

The corporate owner of the 'Willis Tower' is CB Richard Ellis - it was sold around 2004-2005 if I remember correctly. Willis is just leasing the name of the building. I don't think it will work that well in Chicago - I still call the Aon Building the Standard Oil building...

"It's always going to be the Sears Tower. It's part of Chicago and I won't call it Willis Tower. In Chicago we hold fast," Chicago teacher Marianne Turk, 46, said as she stood in line this week to go up to the building's Skydeck.

Everyone said the same thing about Komiskey Park; "I'll never call it by it's corporate name!" That was just a few years ago, and I never hear it referred to anything but US Cellular Field or The Cell any more.

Part of that is because it's not the original stadium anymore. The same reason goes for the United Center (not exactly because it was always called that) even though it was built in basically the same location as the old Chicago Stadium.

It will never be known as the Willis Tower.

Chicagoans are going to keep calling it the Sears Tower, and within 10 or 15 years, someone else will end up owning the building and they'll rename it again.

Wireless Joe 2009-07-16 02:58:24 PM

Wait until they put all the new chrome-shiny windows and cladding on it; it won't be the same skyscraper either. The Shiny Chrome Willis Tower.

16th Street in Huntington, WV was renamed Hal Greer Boulevard, but because Hal Greer was black the old-timers still call it 16th Street.

/The road *to* 16th Street is named 16th Street Road. I'll be damned if it doesn't make sense in a strange way.
